"And suddenly the room changed. At first, he wasn’t sure how. The white walls, the bed, the machines… They all looked the same, but something about them was different. He gasped as he realised what it was. They were no longer real! They were flat, two-dimensional – like paintings. He gripped Mom’s hand harder, trying to steady himself, feeling himself sinking, not down, but in; into her mind, her dream, growing closer and closer as the room ebbed away. Until suddenly he was engulfed, and a black sea rushed towards him, the roar of it a thousand thunders. It crashed him down and pulled him under. He drifted in the currents, in the darkness of the deep. A long way away he could hear the raging of the storm."

Witness to an inexplicable and frightening event, thirteen-year-old Evan Brown must face the unknown to save his family. Kenji is a breathless, wild ride of a read for Young Adults, immersive and emotionally compelling.

From Vic Peterson, author of The Berserkers, at recent convention, Kansas, USA:
Including created documents in fiction is a tried and true method of worldbuilding, but speculative fiction and horror have taken that a step further further to tell stories entirely through footnotes, art gallery exhibit descriptions, FAQs, bibliographies, articles, technical instructions, and more. What are the advantages and disadvantages of storyless storytelling?

Amy sat on the train wondering if she was completely loopy. Gran had told her a story that might have been totally made up, and yet here she was on a wild goose chase into Gran’s past.
There was just a flicker of life left from Gran’s many years on Earth, a glimpse of a story and that was all. The rest of her life was lost to history; it might well have never happened. She had had mum, that was a wonderful thing, but Mum was in trouble and all other embers from Gran’s past were hidden, lost in the mists of a few sparse days of absence. Amy thought she might just catch the final burning ember and light it up again, feeding it with a kind of oxygen, just as she was feeding herself now with hope.

Three for a Girl, Four for a Boy

We are currently running a (friendly) competition for the cover design of a new book by Catherine Cowell with students in their final year of study at the University of Lincoln Illustration course. Very much looking forward to seeing their imaginative interpretations of this unusual story.
