Banner and TTB Partner for Eye-Catching Van Wrap

A striking new van wrap is now a common sight on the roads of South and Mid Wales, highlighting the growing partnership between Banner, a prominent European original equipment (OE) battery manufacturer, and TTB (Truck Trailer & Bus Components), a leading independent commercial vehicle factor in the region.

The co-branded van, set to become a familiar sight for owner-operators, garages, and workshop customers around Bridgend and Cross Keys, features Banner’s well-known ‘Wall Street’ bull alongside TTB’s established branding. The design was developed by Richard Williams, son of TTB’s founder and owner, Mark Williams.

Mark Williams commented on the design: “The overall design that Rich has come up with is a clever fusion of both the TTB and Banner branding and the end result is very striking, modern and dynamic. This is the first van wrap that we’ve been involved with Banner in and the Citroen Berlingo is already proving to be a talking point amongst many of our customers.”

The Banner-branded van joins TTB’s existing delivery fleet, known for its fast and efficient service and access to over one million individual products.

TTB, established in 1994, remains an independent, family-run business with a strong reputation for providing a professional and personal service. Holding over 200,000 commercial vehicle parts, accessories, and consumables in stock, TTB offers free same-day or next-day delivery, focusing on minimising vehicle and operational downtime for its customers.

Banner’s lead-acid battery range, particularly the Buffalo Bull CV and plant range incorporating both AGM and EFB technology, is a key part of TTB’s product offering.

Mark Williams further commented on the relationship with Banner: “We enjoy a very successful working relationship with Banner as they are an accomplished and widely recognised O/E supplier of both CV and plant lead-acid batteries, and the van wrap serves to underline how strong our association is with them. They offer an extensive product range that is unquestionably of the highest quality, which is manifested by extremely low warranty returns.” The co-branded van wrap serves as a visible testament to the ongoing collaboration between Banner and TTB in the South and Mid Wales region.

Unlock opportunities in 2025 with data-driven insights for garages

As workshops continue to face mounting pressures to boost efficiency and profitability, independent garages are being encouraged to embrace data-driven decision-making in the new year.

Real-time, reliable insights are crucial for overcoming operational challenges and driving growth, according to community-driven garage management system, Garage Hive.

"With the right tools, garages can streamline operations and make confident decisions that drive success," said Alex Lindley, Director of Garage Hive.

Garage Hive’s integrated Power BI reporting capabilities provide a comprehensive, real-time view of workshop operations. The solution, favoured by the UK's top garage businesses, helps garage owners avoid the pitfalls of manual reporting, which often leads to errors and unreliable data.

“Relying on manual exports and spreadsheets for custom reports can result in mistakes that negatively impact decision-making," said Ray Dilsons, Managing Director at Garage Hive. “Our automated reporting system eliminates these risks, delivering accurate insights that empower garages to take informed action.”

Garage owners can tailor reports to monitor critical metrics such as workshop controller performance, technician utilisation, and branch profitability. With updates available hourly, daily, or weekly, there’s no longer a need to wait until the end of the month to assess business performance.

“Using a bank balance to gauge your business’s health is a thing of the past,” said Alex. “Our reporting tools enable garages to focus on the key metrics that truly matter, driving productivity, profitability, and growth.”

By combining data on technician efficiency and workshop performance, Garage Hive helps garages optimise their operations and lay the foundations for expansion in 2025.

The system’s dashboards and reports are accessible on both Android and Apple devices, ensuring that owners and managers stay informed, even when away from the office.

Car mechanic jailed for theft and driving while disqualified

A Belfast car mechanic with a history of driving while disqualified has been jailed for 30 months for theft and driving offences. Brian Emerson, 48, pleaded guilty to taking a customer's van without authority, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and theft.

The incident occurred in December 2023 when Emerson, employed at a local garage, drove a customer's Nissan van to a nearby shopping centre and stole a set of jump leads.

This was not an isolated incident. Emerson has a lengthy criminal record, including over 100 previous motoring offences, with 30 convictions for driving while disqualified.

Judge Gordon Kerr KC emphasised the seriousness of Emerson's actions, stating that he had "reached the stage where he has to be told in no uncertain terms that he can no longer consider himself above the driving laws in this country."

This sentence also included an additional two months imprisonment due to a previous suspended sentence for driving offences.

Millions of drivers unaware of dash warning lights

A new study by Warrantywise has revealed a worrying knowledge gap among UK drivers regarding their car's dashboard warning lights. Nearly half (46%) of those surveyed, representing an estimated 23 million people, were unable to identify even half of the lights.

This lack of understanding is concerning as modern vehicles rely heavily on these alerts to communicate a variety of issues, ranging from minor reminders like low washer fluid to critical warnings about engine malfunctions or brake system failures. Ignoring or misinterpreting these signals can have serious consequences, leading to delayed repairs, higher costs, and potentially compromising driver and passenger safety.

Antony Diggins, Managing Director of Warrantywise, emphasises the importance of understanding these warnings: "Your car's dashboard warning system is a crucial safety feature. Taking the time to learn what these lights mean can save you money and protect your vehicle."

The research also found that a small but significant portion of drivers (3%) - approximately 1.5 million people - were unable to identify any warning lights at all. This leaves them particularly vulnerable to unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.

SMMT raise concerns around the challenge of zero emission HGVs

The UK's transition to zero emission vehicles must not overlook the critical role of commercial vehicles, according to Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). While the focus has largely been on passenger cars, the decarbonisation of vans and trucks is equally crucial for achieving net zero targets.

Despite significant efforts by manufacturers, including the availability of numerous electric van models and government incentives like the Plug-in Van Grant, electric van uptake has stagnated this year, reaching only 5.7% of the market. This shortfall is largely attributed to a lack of adequate charging infrastructure to support the needs of larger, more demanding commercial vehicles.

The challenge is even more pronounced in the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) sector. With less than 0.5% of new HGVs being zero emission, the industry faces a significant hurdle in meeting the 2035 ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol trucks weighing up to 26 tonnes.

SMMT is calling for a modernised Plug-in Truck Grant, coupled with a comprehensive strategy for developing and deploying HGV-specific charging infrastructure across the UK. This includes both depot and public charging points to support the needs of all operators.

"Mandates alone are insufficient," states Hawes. "They must be supported by realistic policies, robust incentives, and a robust charging infrastructure."

Furthermore, SMMT emphasises the need for an industrial strategy that supports the development and manufacturing of zero emission vehicles in the UK. This includes measures to reduce manufacturing costs, enhance skills development, and ensure the UK remains competitive in the global automotive market.

By addressing these critical issues, the UK can ensure a successful transition to zero emission commercial vehicles, supporting both environmental goals and the long-term sustainability of the UK's automotive industry.

Ring headlight bulbs shine bright in Auto Express test

As the nights draw in and drivers turn on their headlights earlier, Ring can boast a double win in the recent Auto Express 2024 headlamp bulb test. Both the Xenon200 and Xenon150 bulbs received the "Recommended" award, placing Ring as a leader in the UK automotive bulb market.

The annual test, conducted at Philips' lighting lab in Germany, rigorously examines the performance and safety of bulbs available in the UK. This year, the test focused on H7 and H1 bulbs, analyzing claims made by manufacturers. Significantly, bulbs from original equipment (OE) suppliers, including Ring (part of the OSRAM group), secured the top three spots, highlighting their commitment to performance, compliance, and safety.

This achievement is particularly timely as drivers focus on optimal headlight performance during darker evenings. Managing Director Andy Gratton stressed the importance of OE quality: "With Philips, Osram and Ring taking the top positions, it reinforces that bulbs manufactured by OE companies are leading the way."

The test also revealed that some other brands performed poorly, even failing to meet vital ECE regulations for light output.

Ring's environmental efforts were also commended, with the judges noting the company's switch to eco-friendly packaging. Over the past year and a half, Ring has transitioned its entire bulb range to plastic-free cardboard packaging, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability alongside product quality.

HELLA staff take on charity Christmas jumper challenge to support Ben

HELLA’s UK team is getting into the festive spirit by putting on seasonal knitwear to support the annual Ben Christmas Jumper Day charity event today (Friday 13 December), and to make the Yuletide magic last longer and go further, the company has been running an internal competition to take the best Christmas jumper selfie.

Staff at HELLA have been asked to take a photograph of themselves in their Christmas jumper in an interesting location and send it into head office. For every photo received at HELLA’s UK H.Q in Chipping Warden, near Banbury, the company will donate £5 to Ben. The staff member who submits the best photo is also in line to win a prize.

“We wanted to make sure everyone at HELLA has the chance to take part in Ben Christmas Jumper Day,” said Neil Grant, Managing Director at HELLA UK. “Thanks to our competition, we are also giving everyone the opportunity to get creative too.”

Through Ben’s Christmas Jumper Day, the charity calls on the automotive community to join with colleagues and wear a Christmas jumper, with everyone taking part donating to the industry charity, and the suggested sum this year is £3.

Funds raised through this event, as well as Ben’s many other activities are used to support automotive individuals and families who are struggling, or in crisis, and the organisation offers a wide range of services to those who work or have worked in the industry.

“Taking part in Ben’s Christmas Jumper Day is a great way to raise money for a worthy cause,” said Neil, “and it’s a lot of fun.” To find out more about Ben’s Christmas Jumper Day, go to: https://buff.ly/4gh1wc6 (https://buff.ly/4gh1wc6)
