Bodyshop expands to second site to manage increasing calibration work

Norwich-based car body repair and paint specialist, EASR Bodyshop (https://buff.ly/40qcuoI), has expanded to a second site to manage the increasing amount of repair jobs that now require calibration.

Owner, Steve Davy, says 65 percent of the bodyshop’s work involves some form of ADAS calibration; a number only set to increase. Also, with insurance companies requiring more paperwork when work is subcontracted, it became the right time to invest.

“We’ve been using A1 ADAS Solutions (https://buff.ly/3XVTPQv) for mobile ADAS calibrations for a few years, so it made perfect sense to go to its sister company, A1 Diagnostic Solutions (https://buff.ly/4ayjrJg), when we needed equipment,” he said.

“The team share the same work ethic as me so I was confident that what they advised would not only be the best investment, but exactly the right fit for EASR’s specific requirements.”

Davy, who began his journey in mobile smart repairs, sought the advice of A1’s national sales manager, Matt Hume, who assessed the 18,000 sq ft workshop.

Maximising the newly acquired space was critical for EASR to bring its vision to life, as well as ensuring the new equipment would quickly provide the best return on investment per square foot.

A1 delivered an equipment package that would enable EASR to bring most of its calibration work in-house, as well as expand into structural bodywork; something that required a vehicle lift.

Hume said: “Steve initially wanted a 4-post lift, but after demonstrating one at our HQ, we advised it would take up valuable space gained from the expansion. We needed to think creatively.

“The EAE 62BE 5-ton 2-post vehicle lift was a better option and would afford EASR the space to also accommodate an Absolute Alignment Bluetooth Pro Wheel Alignment system. Steve had been subcontracting wheel alignment work out, so this was crucial part of the solution to bring everything in-house.

“The best ADAS and diagnostic equipment for EASR was Autel’s IA600 ADAS system with accessories, the MS909 Diagnostic system, and a security gateway unlock for the Autel tablet. This could be integrated into the prep area with the flexibility to be moved if needed.

“We supplemented this ADAS system with the A1 Remote Diagnostics Mega Bundle, meaning A1’s technicians can be dialled in to assist with troublesome jobs.”

Davy added: “I think the A1 ADAS Group is great. Everyone is so knowledgeable. I’d go as far to say it’s the only company I’ve ever worked with where every single person knows exactly what they’re doing.

“We work to the BS 10125 insurance standard so for me, partnering with a company like A1 is crucial to carrying out and securing the insurance work which makes up around 90 percent of my business.”

Davy forecasts that even if EASR only completes two calibrations per day, he’ll see a return on investment from the whole equipment package in as little as two months.

He concluded: “Bringing calibration work in-house via the A1 ADAS Group is a win-win for me.

“EASR is now even more appealing to insurance companies, we’re increasing the bottom line, and are future proofed for increasingly ADAS enabled vehicles.

“The icing on the cake is we still have A1 to support us. There’ll always be calibration jobs that we struggle with, but it’s never a headache with them on hand. There’s nothing they can’t find a solution for, never any excuses, the job just gets done. They make my life so much easier.”

Future-proofing apprenticeships as Delphi Academy opens doors to young mechanics

Delphi Academy, a training centre for the automotive industry, hosted a group of apprentice mechanics from Worcestershire to showcase the diverse career paths available in the sector. This initiative aims to address the rapid technological advancements in the industry and ensure a future-proofed workforce.

The enrichment day, held on 22 January, welcomed nine second-year apprentices from Heart of Worcestershire College. The program covered various topics, including electric and hybrid vehicle technology, diagnostic tools, and the continued role of independents in the petrol and diesel market. Additionally, apprentices explored the potential of hydrogen technology.

“Our students often exist in a bubble,” said college lecturer Dale Ruston. “only seeing their workshop, and the college. Enrichment days like this show there is so much more to the industry, and that they don't have to stay where they are now. This visit will be a real eye-opener for them.”

Delphi's UK Technical Services Manager, Luke Garratt, emphasised the breadth of the industry during his opening address. “You all work in garages, but behind you is a huge industry, with so many opportunities.”

The day included sessions on parts development, diesel technology, diagnostics, tyres, and electric vehicles. Apprentices also had the opportunity to use the Academy's facilities and witness the creation of training materials, including online content for Delphi's Masters of Motion platform.

The apprentices, all working at independent garages, found the experience valuable. "I learned a lot about the industry, especially parts development, which I hadn't considered before," said Joshua Jennings from Mintro Padmore Garage.

Tyler Humphreys from Worcester Mobile agreed. “I’ve seen a lot of cool stuff. It was really good. Today has shown me that having the right qualifications can open many doors. I'm going to finish my apprenticeship, get my Level 3, do my MOT course and then go from there.”

Leo Reed from Pershore Service Centre in Pershore said: “I learned a lot today, and the event has given me fresh ideas on what I could do in the industry.”

At the end of the visit, Luke added: “You know Delphi as a brand, and you have used the brand. Now you have seen what happens behind the brand. I hope we have enlightened you, so you can see what this industry is really about.”

Reflecting on the importance of engaging with those just beginning their careers, he concluded: “Life can seem hard when you first step into this industry, which could put some people off before they really get started. However, once you see what is possible, this industry becomes very enticing. Today’s group were reticent when they arrived, but by the time they left, they were very enthusiastic about what they had seen. This is so important, and we are looking forward to doing this again very soon.”

This successful collaboration between Delphi and the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) paves the way for future enrichment days targeting students at various stages of their automotive apprenticeships.

Beat the chill with Yuasa winter warmer promotion for mechanics

To combat the winter blues and seasonal battery woes, Yuasa, a leading battery manufacturer, has launched its "Winter Warmer" promotion. This timely initiative offers mechanics a chance to acquire a complimentary gift set with their Yuasa battery purchases.

Available through participating distributors nationwide, the promotion includes a limited-edition tin containing a Yuasa beanie hat, gloves, and socks. These high-quality items boast a combined retail value of over £45 and are designed to keep mechanics warm during the winter months, a period known for increased battery failures.

The bespoke tin itself serves a dual purpose. Not only does it house the winter gear, but its size makes it ideal for storing workshop essentials like spanners and sockets, ensuring the Yuasa brand remains a fixture in garages long after the promotion ends.

"Cold weather and battery failure are a common winter pairing," said Jon Pritchard, Sales & Marketing Director at GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK Ltd. "This promotion is perfectly timed to address both concerns."

He further emphasized Yuasa's commitment to providing value to mechanics, stating, "We hope this offering not only keeps them warm but also differentiates Yuasa from competitors while adding a touch of seasonal style to workshops across the country."

Yuasa's reputation for quality and reliability is well-established. Their precision-engineered batteries, boasting 99.9% UK vehicle parc coverage, are the best-selling brand in the country. They are also a trusted original equipment supplier to major car manufacturers like Toyota, Hyundai, and Ford.

The Yuasa YBX battery range, a market leader since 2014, caters to various vehicle needs with conventional, EFB, and AGM technologies. This commitment to offering OE-quality solutions for millions of motorists translates to a strong partnership with mechanics.

This promotion highlights Yuasa's dedication to supporting the trade by offering not only industry-leading products but also practical incentives that make a real difference during the challenging winter season.

GSF Car Parts announces three TechFest events for 2025

GSF Car Parts, the UK’s fastest-growing motor factor, is excited to announce the return of its landmark aftermarket trade show and conference, TechFest, with three dates confirmed for 2025.

Manchester: 21 May

Coventry: 19 June

London: 18 September

GSF, which has an expanding network of 194 branches, launched TechFest last year with a packed-out show at London’s Wembley Stadium. It was attended by 70 aftermarket suppliers and more than 2,000 garage attendees from across the aftermarket.

Garages and suppliers alike reported being ‘blown away’ by a mix of attractions including guest speakers, technical content, interactive attractions and exceptional food.

The 2025 programme starts with Techfest North in Manchester in May, before heading to Coventry in June for TechFest Midlands. TechFest London will conclude the programme by returning to Wembley Stadium in September. The three dates represent huge growth for the event off the back of overwhelmingly positive feedback.

TechFest brings the industry together for a unique and impactful event of networking and market insight. Steve Horne, CEO, GSF Car Parts, commented: “We received huge amounts of positive feedback to what was a completely new concept last summer. We know we can make TechFest ‘bigger and better’ and are absolutely committed to staying connected to our customers.

“Three TechFest events will offer many more garages the opportunity to join us, and we can’t wait to host them and offer a platform for our suppliers to showcase the latest developments and profit opportunities.”

TechFest tickets are free to garages, you can register now online by clicking here. (https://buff.ly/4gaLPSU)

Yorkshire garage seeing surge in EV enquiries

Howarth’s Garage (https://buff.ly/3WDbj4f), a Bosch car service centre in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, says it’s seeing an influx of new EV business.

The garage is the only independent in the area to offer EV servicing, something owner Phil Howarth is keen to capitalise on.

After expanding three years ago, Howarth realised that to attract the right customers, the business needed to update its online strategy and adapt to the way people now look for garage repairs and services.

He said: “After investing in new premises, equipment, and the Garage Hive management system, I turned my attention to our website. Our old one was 10 years old and had been built by a local company with no automotive industry knowledge. It only ever brought in the odd enquiry.

“The world has changed a lot over the last ten years but our online ‘shop window’ hadn’t. Nobody could find it, and it didn’t show people the breadth of repairs and services we offer.

“Not only are we VW Group specialists and the only local independent garage offering EV servicing, we’re also the only garage in the area offering Class 1 and Class 2 MOTs, in addition to Class 4.

“And whilst we’re in a busy commuter belt, it became apparent that to let customers know Howarth’s Garage is the only one they need, we had to make it easy for them to find us. We simply had to show up online.

“I’d heard Jim from Garage Services Online (https://buff.ly/3ZfSfuH) (GSO) talk on James Dillon’s podcast; it made complete sense. I book my barber online, so why wasn’t I making it easy for vehicle owners in Mirfield to book a service or MOT online too?”

Howarth appointed automotive website specialist GSO and within weeks the site was reaping dividends.

“We’re now attracting a lot of VAG work and we’re definitely busier with the sort of customer that’s perfect for us,” continued Howarth.

“We’ve also seen a surge in EV work, specifically from Tesla owners looking for servicing. When you search for ‘Tesla servicing’ in this area, we’re top of the page. Customers who don’t want to go to the main dealer now have a choice – and a lot of them seem to be choosing us.

“Getting the website was a no-brainer. It saves us a lot of admin time and attracts the right customers. (https://buff.ly/3ZfSfuHfree-no-obligation-quote/garage-wire/)

“The team at GSO is amazing and very approachable. They implemented everything we asked for and it’s working fantastic.

“We embraced EV rather than ignoring it. I’m glad we did the same with our website too.”
