HiQ emerges as one of the UK’s fastest-growing autocentre networks

HiQ Tyres & Autocare was one of the fastest-growing retailers in the sector over the past year, growing its network from 169 to 190 centres in just 12 months, marking a significant upward trajectory in the automotive aftermarket.

This growth propelled HiQ up to fourth position from sixth in Tyres & Accessories’ Retail Rankings. Editor Chris Anthony noted that this impressive growth was fuelled by franchise commitment, stating: “HiQ has shot up to fourth position from sixth position in last year’s table by, in addition to working with its existing franchisees, rolling out the HiQ network into synergies with vehicle dealerships and other existing automotive businesses.”

For tyre dealers, garages, and car retailers, this expansion demonstrates the confidence and viability of the HiQ franchise model, supported by Goodyear. Franchises benefit from several advantages:

- Support and scale: Access to parent company resources combined with local business responsiveness.

- Proven business model: Established operational systems, national marketing, training, and standards.

- Growth potential: The network is actively expanding, outpacing rivals in branch growth.

Craig Sprigmore, Goodyear Retail Director UK & Ireland, explained the benefits: “As an independent, it may struggle with brand recognition, marketing scale, supply chain costs and attracting trust for high value services... But as a HiQ franchisee, it can plug into a globally supported network, get access to marketing, systems, training and tyre supply leverage, plus the momentum of new branches launching nearby, raising the brand visibility in its region.”

Franchisees benefit from nationwide buying power, logistics, marketing capabilities, and the Goodyear group’s credibility. For those considering a franchise, this support helps reduce risks tied to brand reputation, supply chain, and technical standards.

Delphi Academy to take Tesla training to Mira Technology Institute

Delphi Academy is partnering with North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College (NWSLC) to host free Tesla Service & Maintenance training at the MIRA Technology Institute on Monday 20 October 2025.

Many independent garages remain cautious about servicing Teslas. By working together, NWSLC and Delphi Academy aim to break down that hesitation, giving workshops a clear view of what’s involved and the confidence to recognise Tesla servicing as both practical and profitable.

“Electric vehicles are now part of everyday workshop life,” said Luke Garratt, UK Technical Services Manager at Delphi. “But Teslas can still feel daunting to some garages. This taster session is about stripping away the myths, showing technicians exactly what’s involved, and giving them the confidence to add EV services to their business.”

The timing is critical. More than 200,000 Teslas are already on UK roads, with a further 150,000 expected to enter the aftermarket between 2025 and 2027. Yet many independents still believe these vehicles are too complex to maintain.

Delphi Academy aims to challenge that perception, showing how routine Tesla servicing, from brake fluid and coolant changes to service mode access, can be carried out safely and profitably by trained technicians.

“Delphi’s practical training is helping to break down barriers and change minds,” added Charlotte Ward, Commercial Project Manager at NWSLC. “We want to show garages that with the right knowledge, Tesla servicing is not something to fear. They’re a real opportunity to grow their business.”

The session combines Delphi Academy’s OE-based EV expertise with NWSLC’s focus on skills growth, giving independent workshops a practical insight into one of the fastest-growing segments of the UK car parc.

Funded by Innovate UK through the Further Education Innovation Fund, the event is part of the Driving SME Innovation in the West Midlands project, supporting innovation, productivity and high-quality jobs.

Tickets to the event, which runs from 3.00pm – 8.00pm, are available to online by clicking here.

Ulverston Ford dealership cars damaged in forecourt rampage

A man in his twenties and two youths caused ‘extensive damage’ to vehicles on the forecourt of Alan Myerscough Ltd’s Ford dealership in Ulverston, resulting in total damages exceeding £63,000, South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court heard.

Regan Satterthwaite, 21, and two teenagers (who cannot be named) climbed a fence to enter the grounds in the early hours of February 25 last year. Prosecutor Peter Kelly told the court they accessed four insecure vehicles, including two £52,000 Wildtrak Ford pickup trucks, a campervan, and another vehicle with an RRP of £73,000.

CCTV footage captured one of the pickup trucks being accessed. Mr Kelly explained: “The engine was started and the lights switched on. The vehicle was driven in a stop start motion on the forecourt. It shunted back and forth into other vehicles causing other cars to move. The three defendants were seen in the vehicle.”

Forensic analysis of fingerprints led to the identification of the three individuals. Mr Kelly stressed the "high harm that has been caused. It is clear this has had financial repercussions on members of staff.”

Defending Satterthwaite, solicitor Trystan Roberts stated that his client had no previous convictions and was 19 at the time, "experimenting with using substances" and engaging in anti-social behaviour. He described the actions as "sheer recklessness and youthful ignorance," arguing that the defendants were "appalled when they discovered the potential value" of the damage.

Magistrates sentenced Satterthwaite to an 18-month community order with 220 hours of unpaid work and 10 RAR days. The two teenagers received six- and eight-month youth rehabilitation orders. All three were jointly ordered to pay £666.66 in compensation to cover the dealership’s insurance excess.

Electric vehicle sales reach record high in September registrations

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the UK hit a record high last month, according to the latest industry figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers (SMMT).

Sales of pure battery electric vehicles (BEV) grew by almost a third to 72,779 in September, while sales of plug-in hybrid cars grew at an even faster rate. This meant that fully electric or hybrid vehicles collectively made up more than half of all new car registrations in the UK last month.

The SMMT attributes the strong performance to carmakers offering discounts, an increased choice of models for consumers, and the recent introduction of the government's grant scheme. So far in 2025, zero-emission vehicles account for more than one in five (22.1%) new cars registered.

The data reveals that 71.4% of BEVs registered in September were bought by businesses or for use in fleets, though the number of private buyers of fully electric cars has risen over the past year.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said electrified vehicles were "powering market growth after a sluggish summer." He noted that industry investment in electric vehicles was "paying off," despite consumer demand "trailing ambition."

Mr Hawes added that the government's electric car grant scheme, which offers a discount of up to £3,750 on eligible vehicles, would help "break down one of the barriers" holding back people making the switch away from petrol and diesel.

Customer left with £10,000 debt after luxury car purchases broke down

A Llanelli woman says she has been left with a huge debt after paying thousands for a car that she never got, following a series of incidents at the Motorpoint dealership in Swansea.

Rebecca Green exchanged her Range Rover for an Audi Q2, incurring a negative equity of £5,700. After making a £2,500 payment, she owed £3,200 on the new finance agreement. Minutes after leaving the forecourt, the Audi broke down.

Green said: "I had black smoke coming from my engine. My son couldn't get his seatbelt off quick enough and I was obviously screaming to get him out of the car. I had to swing myself out, there was smoke everywhere."

The dealership took the car back, deemed it a write-off, and offered a replacement. Green chose a Mercedes A200, which also broke down after three miles when the engine management light came on. She later found a diagnostic sheet detailing faults in the glove box. After four weeks of repairs, the light came on again five miles after collection.

Green decided against a third attempt, opting instead to pay the outstanding £3,200 for the original Range Rover using a loan. She stated: "I just took out a loan to pay them off because it was the only option, I didn't want to pick another car off them. So now I'm five and a half grand out of pocket and I have no car. Because I've taken a loan out, with interest now it is nearly £10,000."

Motorpoint Swansea stated they are taking "all issues raised by Ms Green very seriously" and confirmed they offered to reinstate her previous finance deal and return her Range Rover, which was declined. The company noted: "Without choosing to enter into a new finance agreement, there was nowhere for Ms Green’s negative equity to be absorbed and therefore needed to be paid in full."
