Big Bear Records, probably the longest established independent record company in the UK, have been at the forefront of Jazz, Swing and Blues since 1968. The Big Bear Music Group are the organisers behind the annual Birmingham & Solihull Jazz & Blues Festival, the publishers of the Jazz Rag Magazine, as well acting as booking agents for an extensive roster of live bands.

Big Bear Music/Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival head honcho Jim Simpson, received The Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Birmingham Awards presentation on Saturday 9th November at Eastside Rooms.

The Award acknowledged Jim's "decades-long influence in the music industry and his work with The Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival and Big Bear Music, which have been instrumental in shaping Birmingham’s cultural landscape”.

This award is most timely, coming in the same year that The Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival celebrated its successful 40th year with 239 performances, 230 of them free admission, in 120 venues, attracting musicians from Estonia, Spain, Norway, Italy, France, Singapore and the U.S.A. This year Jim Simpson also became an Honorary Doctor of Music, awarded by The University of Birmingham.

Come and celebrate this momentous accolade on Tuesday 19th November at 6:45pm when Jim and Ron Simpson's third book, "Dirty Stop Outs Guide To 1980s Birmingham” will be launched at a free event, open to all at Henry's Blueshouse at Snobs Birmingham

Birmingham's 1980s Legacy Reborn: A Time of Music, Rebellion, and Cultural Overhaul.

In a decade marked by dramatic transformation, from the electrifying rise of Duran Duran at the Rum Runner to the city’s response to the 1985 Handsworth Riots, a brand-new book delves into the people, places, and pivotal moments that made the city a cultural powerhouse.
It was a time when music, rebellion, and social change collided, and Birmingham became a hub for creativity, resistance, and new forms of expression.
Dirty Stop Outs Guide to 1980s Birmingham not only relives the highs of the era’s iconic venues but also highlights the challenges the city faced, such as the Handsworth Riots and industrial decline, making it a definitive tribute to a decade that shaped modern Birmingham.
The book follows the best-selling Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Birmingham, which was released in 2022.
The book covers numerous venues that helped define the era – places like the Rum Runner, Snobs Nightclub, The Powerhouse, Burberries (The Click Club), The Barrel Organ, Edwards, The Odeon (New Street), Digbeth Civic Hall (The Institute), and many more.
It also includes the home-grown artists that provided the soundtrack for the era. Bands like Duran Duran, UB40, Black Sabbath (without Ozzy), Steel Pulse, Swans Way, and Musical Youth, who enjoyed national and international success.

The launch of the Dirty Stop Out's Guide to 1980s Birmingham book will take place on Tuesday 19th November at Snobs Birmingham at 6:45pm with a Q&A with authors Jim and Ron Simpson and publisher Neil Anderson and guest speakers to be announced soon. Immediately following this at 8pm will be the weekly Henry's Blueshouse event at the same venue with live music from The Shufflepack.
