January 11, 1969 - 2024: 55 years of: Led Zeppelin.

The legacy starts here.

Deep into the counter-culture, arose a rocknroll revolution: The British Invasion, lead by THE BEATLES, THE KINKS and THE ROLLING STONES, they shook the establishment to it's very core. Eventually another set of rebel-teens united the divine-forces of ex-YARDBIRDS Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Bonham and Robert Plant ...the only incarnation of LED ZEPPELIN.

1966-to-69 sunny California's heavyrock: the acid power of the mighty IRON BUTTERFLY and BLUE CHEER had already left a mark, Great Britain rapidly responded with CREAM, DEEP PURPLE ...and LED ZEPPELIN ...the birth of the US-versus-UK rock-rivalry.

From the first punches of the opening "Good Times Bad Times" we knew that this would be a monstrous ride. The melodramatic reprise of Anne Bredon's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", to the cathedral-intro of "Your Time Is Gonna Come", to the ethereal heavyrock morphs into spacerock medley "How Many More Times", to Willie Dixon's cult '"You Shook Me" and onto the fast paced "Communication Breakdown" ...a cut credited as the first heavymetal song. Where THE BEATLES's Helter Skelter set the bar high (and heavy) ...ZEP ran with it, going all 175bpm into a full blown palm-muting guitar-riff driven rocknroll crash-course.

Building up to the LP's climax, the grandiose "Dazed And Confused". A slow-paced doom bass-guitar, courtesy of Jones, that surrounds you with four thick walls of heaviness and sorrow and doesn't let go. The wah-guitar tip-toes around and the feeling slowly grips you, all the way to the heavymetallesque explosive lead-work of Page. The first lead-guitar speed shred ever put on tape.

Currently RIAA-certified 8x Platinum, Led Zeppelin I is the blueprint for heavyrock, a true monolith: the bass grooves, the sharp-edge guitar, the loud anthemic drums and that gigantic Robert Plant voice dictates to a tee. This is hard-rocknroll music, the foundation for hardrock, heavyrock and eventual heavymetal.

The rocknroll lifestyle stepped-up with the band's growing popularity. Fame, money, limos, hotels, women, jets and other bloody-excesses where part of their entourage from Day One. The Fab-Four did it first, but it was now ZEPPed into the stratosphere. From the occult to hard-hitting blues, from arenarock to proto-heavymetal, LED ZEPPELIN played it and influenced millions to follow and explore into their indelible foot-steps. Note that both Jimmy Page and Robert Plant where eventually knighted as OBE and CBE respectively, talk about rock royalty !

The artwork: the 1937 Hindenburg, the origins of the "Lead" Zeppelin. One of mankind's fierce tragedies, the death of 40+ people caught live on camera, now immortalized on the multi-Platinum selling record-jacket. Foreshadowing their fate of what would be: a titanic entity, hovering over the world and then in a flash, a sudden end, relating to Bonham's instant death in 1980.

Yet the very best was yet to come: with October 1969's Led Zeppelin II, 1970s Led Zeppelin III and '71 monolithic Led Zeppelin IV LP ...all of this madness within a 30month span ...talk about an impressive legacy.

The genesis for hardrock: no album in history is as important as Led Zeppelin I.

January 10, 1999 - 2024: 25 years of: Unification.

More Euro horsepower.

During the whirlwind of powermetal's expansion, this German unit made sure the quality of musicianship was world-class. Having pushed their instrument into oblivion on their 1997 Iron Savior debut-CD, the Hamburg hammer hits back, with an out-of-this-world follow-up concept-album.

In the year 2110, beautiful twisted harmonies clashes on "Coming Home", an inter-galactic burst of kinetic energy. The stampede goes into madness with the controlled demolition blasts of "Starborn" and the crunch of "Brothers (Of The Past)".

Top-shelf powermetal shines on "Deadly Sleep", while the menacing watcher in the sky of "Eye To Eye" is another epic tale of melodic might. Brighter than a thousand suns, a powerful high-beam gamma ray gleams in the form of "Prisoner Of The Void" and the added "Neon Knights" BLACK SABBATH-reprise is a fine rendition of this immortal.

Round Two, featuring again lead-work and vocal-lines from Eurometal-Royalty ...Mr. Kai Hansen.

Tagged along powerhouse-producer Piet Sielck and GAMMA RAY skin-man Dan Zimmermann, this from beyond industry sets the pace. Since 1997, this new thick red-blood resurgence for modern powermetal is fueled by HAMMERFALL and PRIMAL FEAR. IRON SAVIOR brings more RPMs and a posh astral concept to this beautiful lethal rebirth.

January 6, 1984 - 2024: 40 years of: Fistful Of Metal.

The East-Coast's counter-attack.

While the greater New-York City area was already a hot-spot for hardcore-punk and other smelly shenanigans, the West-Coast, by very late 1983, already had both METALLICA and SLAYER officially on tape. In a fast heavymetal state of euphoria, the Anthrax quintet would bring a new signature into thrashmetal: powermetal vocals.

Full speed ahead, they tag along the "Deathrider" with "Panic". Two axe-killers with double-bassdrums rolls. The new created thrashmetal tone was upped with Euro-influenced high-pitched vocals.

Fi***ng with fury, the nuclear assault continues on "Death From Above" and the warriors of "Soldiers Of Metal". More power and aggression seize with might on the raging signature "Metal Thrashing Mad", while the Alice Cooper classic "I'm Eighteen" gets a distorted outlook.

Signed by the cool Megaforce Records, led by owner Jon Zazula who almost single-handedly promoted the heavymetal movement into America, via his underground record-store Rock N Roll Heaven ...the stormtroopers of ANTHRAX were in good hands. The race was on, the USA now had three to-be-major key-players in the fledging thrashmetal genre. The First Wave would be complete by mid-1985, with official debut-LPs by both EXODUS and MEGADETH.

By late-84, singer Neil Turbin was out and Joey Belladonna's vocal were soon immortalized on their February 1985 Armed And Dangerous EP. Simultaneously casted aside, bassist Danny Lilker would launch his noisy career, starting with NUCLEAR ASSAULT. ANTHRAX's next step would break the speed of sound, disturbing the peace and distributing metal-sickness with 1985's Spreading The Disease LP.

January 4, 1984 - 2024: 40 years of: MCML###IV.

From passionate Platinum to delightful Diamond.

1984's calendar-year would push hardrock from the gutter, into the open-wide limelight. Los Angeles was the hot-bed for rockers and bikers, and now both FM and MTV, were embracing the hardrock sound. Terrorizing the scene worldwide since 1978, Sunset Strip's biggest and baddest powerhouse would reach the zenith of hardrockizm ...and also close the lid on their rowdy domination.

The year is 1984 and VAN HALEN provides hardrock's pinnacle.

The rich Oberheim opens The Gates on the eerie "1984" soundtrack-intro ...as rock god Eddie Van Halen shatters glass ...on keyboards. The universal rock-cut "Jump" drives the LP into mainstream-territory. Once ruled by newwave, the guitar-effect hadn't really got a fair share of decibels, but since the latter was now in Eddie's hands, the new crowds fully embraced the attached hot lead-work. Bridging between hardrock and poprock scenes, the fusion was now complete. For headbangers, the track was more of a sell-out attempt to tame the almightiest, yet the remaining of the album does includes some sick material.

Ride with full piston-pumping and power-steering across the "Panama". The band shakes the Earth to the core, another definite key-signature in arena-rock / party-rock and on to the metalized riff-o-rama of "House Of Pain" ...Eddie Van Halen is alive and well.

Still walking down the meanstreets, along gorgeous "Drop Dead Legs" and the forbidden fantasy of "Hot For Teacher". The hard-edged band we know and love is leading the pack, with perfect groove, pristine percussions and scandalous lyric-set to match.

The super slick hooks of "Top Jimmy" and steel robust build-up of the mammoth "Girl Gone Bad" is another lesson in hard-rocknrollizm. The highly celebrated powerballad "I'll Wait" blessed the airwaves and gathered more once lukewarm fans at the VH-altar ...no Bozos allowed !

The year is 1984 and VAN HALEN provides hardrock's pinnacle.

Fully recorded at Eddie's brand new self-built 5150 Studios. The top-class building, located in Eddie's own Beverly Hills backyard, housed the finest music-technology available to man and gave MCML###IV that crisp tone filled with rich bass and huge natural headroom. The band would record there until their very last 2012 sessions.

The LP is currently RIAA-certified 10x Platinum, a loud headbanging 10 million+ sold in the USA. One of the very few rock bands that achieved this elite milestone: the Diamond-certification. Other metric includes THE BEATLES, LED ZEPPELIN, AC/DC and eventual METALLICA. The early 80s were hardrock ready and while the chaos was a usual feature for this unit, the mainstream-crowd was finally ready for major ass-kicking.

During the heat of the decadent-decade, before BON JOVI, GUNS 'N ROSES, WHITESNAKE and MÖTLEY CRÜE ...the almighty VAN HALEN, once again, delivers a perfect rock-LP.

The year is 1984 and VAN HALEN provides hardrock's pinnacle.

The final chapter.

By mid 1985, the egos and icons would lose their unique iconic frontman, as the crazy from the heat David Lee Roth would head into solo-territory, leaving the brothers room to bloom into poprock realms with ...MONTROSE's Sammy Hagar. A new trimmed-down, lighter and somewhat serious VAN HALEN / VAN HAGAR would arise during the explosive glamrock-scene, with 1986's 5150 LP. Simultaneously, the unstoppable Roth would dwell in debauchery with new guitar-God Steve Vai on 1986's Eat 'Em And Smile LP ...the most Van Halen-less VAN HALEN !

January 1984 - 2024: 40 years of: Flex•Able.

A new era is upon us.

During the post-Edward Van Halen and post-Randy Rhoads game-changing, the six-string bending was about to morph into oblivion. From the Frank Zappa band to eventual ALCATRAZZ, rocknroll world, please welcome to the arena of sports, the always flexible: Steve Vai.

Landing from above, we meet the "Little Green Men" ...a from beyond experience, this is divine. Not just whammy-bar wankery but actual synth-effects and some spatial magic.

The expressive Vai goes into bar-blues with "Call It Sleep", the dreamy "Salamanders In The Sun" and funky "The Boy / Girl Song". Riff-o-rama rock appears in the form of "The Attitude Song" and the just go for it "Viv Woman".

At the crossroad.
1984 would also bring Swedish Yngwie J. Malmsteen under the spotlight, as the 80s would finally be lead-guitar album-concept friendly. In two-years for now, the hyperactive Steve Vai would become the handy-man for one of hardrock's most flamboyant frontman: Diamond David Lee Roth.

December 28, 1973 - 2023: 50 years of: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

Masterpiece bloody masterpiece.

Albeit writer's block from riff-mainman Tony Iommi, Black Sabbath would finally hatch their crowing achievement with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Musically far away from 1972's doomrock Vol. 4 LP, this incidental evolution would prove the naysayers wrong.

The attack blasts-off with the explosive title-track "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". A loud jack-hammer with destructive consequences ...the final coda breaks the Richter-scale. The suave crunch of "A National Acrobat" rapidly goes into space-rock at the breakdown-part, while the mystifying eyes of the lovely lady of "Sabra Cadabra" morphs from heavyrock to jazz-jam ...a cut featuring a certain Rick Wakeman of YES fame on the Minimoog.

The poison is fed with a spoon with the lullaby of "Fluff", while the synth-driven "Who Are You ?" is a unique stratosphere trek, an unconventional number for a usual pentatonic rock-band. The LP's closing-track "Spiral Architect" is an operatic rock venture, fully supported by violins and bagpipes.

Tour-de-force.

Fifth LP where the band finally achieved it's musical zenith. From proto-metal to prog-rock, from eerie to ecstatic, from heavy to heavenly, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is the shiny diamond of the Ozzy-led era ...their Sgt. Pepper. BLACK SABBATH were finally taken seriously by the competition and by the critics. RIAA-certified Platinum, the evolution shall ascend in 1975, with the hard rocknroll highjack of Sabotage.

December 26, 1973 - 2023: 50 years of: The Exorcist.

Hell at home.

Brushing away the vampires and living deads of the 60s and before the teen-slashers of the late 70s ...Christianity gets a power-punch in the c_nt. Georgetown would never be the same.

The Mother of horror-movies is changing the game, as the blatant attack on both the Priest and the Church, is an unorthodox expression of deep visceral hate and shock-value against the establishment. The 70s would never be the same.

Based on William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel The Exorcist, the film adaptation would break the convention in horror-movie making, crush the Roman Catholic's covenant and bring society to it's fu***ng knees. The exorcism of Western Civilization.

Evil has landed.
From normal cute small-town teenage-girl to fully rotted demoniac-possession, poor Regan is ...the chosen one. After thorough medical tests, Doctors and Psychiatrics cannot understand her changing behavior, the Devil fully controls her body and soul. Pazuzu possessed, it would take a cleansing-ritual, two Priests and a self-sacrifice to free her from the grasps of evil. This event is beyond paranormal-activities ...it's a Catholic carnage !

Overly obscene.
Released the day after Christmas 1973, at the height of the oil-crisis, the controversy exploded America-wide. From people walking-out in disgust, to numerous vomiting in attendance and fainting during presentations, this is the kind of promotion that money cannot buy. Nevertheless this is showbusiness and albeit extreme material, massive crowds continued to gather at the box-office, making the movie a top-draw for months.

Total desecration.
Numerous religious voices arose to the podium, blaming the producers of pure blasphemy and destroying the very fabric of morals and Holiness. Later with the advent of home-media in the 80s, a renewed interest kept the menace alive. Now integral part of pop-culture, there is a define time-line in horror movie-making: pre-Exorcist ...and post-Exorcist.

An eerie melody.
Through incidental black magic, The Exorcist's unsung hero is not even an on-screen persona, but a mere 3min-snippet from Mike Oldfield's 49min instrumental Tubular Bells LP. A British prog-rock epic that became the revered cold signature-track, synonym for thrills, but also a launching pad for both Oldfield and Virgin Records.

Depraved decade.
Wall-to-wall occultism, from 1966's Anton Lavey's underground Church Of Satan, to 1968's Rosemary's Baby Hollywood Satanism ...The Exorcist now brings Rated R demonic-possession to every hometown in America. A new genre was born and would soon bloom with more unholy appearances by both 1976's To The Devil ...A Daughter and The Omen.

December 23, 1988 - 2023: 35 years of: Hellbound: Hellraiser II.

Poor, poor Kirsty.

The second installment of this hellish fairytale. The Gates Of Hell have been opened, again ...and this time everybody goes in, Doctor's orders !

Still shaken by her recent encounter, Kirsty goes back to Hell to save her Father ...with the help of a her new puzzle-solving friend Tiffany. Facing her revived skinless step-mother, she will eventually face Pinhead and his trusty Cenobites. Now escape, no deal, time to play.

Deep inside the walls of the labyrinth of pain and pleasure, the all too curious Dr. Channard shall himself become a Cenobite via Leviathan, the God of flesh, hunger and desire.

Continuation of his 1986 novel The Hellbound Heart, British writer and producer Clive Barker was the king of super-natural horror. Keeping the mysticism alive during the mid 80s, the blood flows aplenty during this new era of psychedelic horror. Act III shall ascend downtown with 1992's Hellraiser: Hell On Earth.

December 1973 - 2023: 50 years of: Bachman-Turner Overdrive II.

Loud and repeat ...takin' care of business.

A mere six months has passed, still under the foggy haze of BTO 1 ...the rhyme says: hit hard and leave a mark. Don't get fooled by the sleeve-montage, this ain't a live-record but another slab of proud overdrive.

Like C-4, we all get "Blown" to smithereens with loud guitars and power-rock riffing. The boogie-vibed "Welcome Home" gets into both progressive and heavymetal territory, while "Tramp" fully confirms the latter statement. Some roots of doomrock elements are all over "Give It time" and diametrically "I Don't Have To Hide" could logically be labeled as ...Northern ZZ TOP.

The slick "Let It Ride" is a cool FM-attempt to tame the masses while the now 50 year-young immortal "Takin' Care Of Business" actually cements the band's reputation as bona fide classicrock hit-generators.

It's safe to say that Canada's 1973 was fully BACHMAN-TURNER OVERDRIVEd. Our wild Prairies Boys would attack our senses again, with Summer 74's crash-proof Not Fragile LP.

December 12, 1983 - 2023: 40 years of: Earth A.D. / Wolfs Blood.

More evil thrash.

Second studio offering from the Misfits ...third one if you count the then unreleased 1978 Static Age LP. Pushing the underground to the extremes, just before the actual thrashmetal take over. From Lodi to London's dungeon, the teenagers from Mars want more ghouls and more skulls.

The aggressive "Earth A.D." destroys the opposition and overdriven hardcore-punk explodes on "Death Comes Ripping" and the speed-freak of "Green Hell" ...a track later reprised by METALLICA on their 1987 Garage Days Re-Revisited EP.

The midpaced "Bloodfeast" clearly distinguishes itself as a precursor for upcoming morbid musical events, while both rapid blasts of "Queen Wasp" and "Domonomania" are dark hellraisers. Later CD and tape bonus-tracks, includes the classic Die, Die My Darling session.

The last call ...the last caress, as these misfits would disolve right after Halloween 1983. Glenn Danzig would dig more underground into the tombs and conceive his new vision. Summer 1984 would not be ready for the bloody funeral assault of SAMHAIN's Initium.

December 7, 1998 - 2023: 25 years of: Oceanborn.

Becoming symphonic.

Caught between Norway's blackmetal and Germany's powermetal scenes ...Finland's got an Ace Of Spades up it's sleeve. Slowly getting traction from their 1997 Angels Fall First debut-CD, Nightwish would now forever lay the foundations for this new scene: Symphonic-Metal.

Cellos up the game, as we look deep into the dark skies along the "Stargazers". Powermetal fuelled by Tarja Turunen's strong octave angelic voice, this is a classy lethal-mix. The slick piano drives both "Gethsemane" and "Sacraments Of Wilderness" into rock-opera territory.

At the lake-side, the beautiful "Swanheart" sets the mood to epicness and diametrically the arena-rock flair of "The Riddler" sends the decibel-meter into oblivion. Proud metal-muscle are flexed on "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" and the fast-jabs of "The Pharaoh Sails To Orion".

Pure pristine candlelight castle metal-magic ...a vision brought to us by keyboardist / writer Tuomas Holopainen.

In this ever changing scene, NIGHTWISH was now a force to reckon with. During the following calendar-years, many (many many many) bands would soon spring out of the woodwork, all featuring a front-women lead-singer. They are our sin and their grandiose might would bloom furthermore with 2000's Wishmaster CD.

December 5, 1983 - 2023: 40 years of: Balls To The Wall.

Germany's magnum opus.

After 1982's teenage rage Restless And Wild LP, the band refocused and aimed for new territories. Still underground, yet still true heavymetal, ACCEPT would now bring more Flying Vs into mainstream hardrock.

"Let's plug a bomb in everyone's ass."

The drums and bass groove cracks skull as the rough rebels of "London Leatherboys" rides into town. Decibel-defiant, the fretboard is burning on the high beat on "Fight It Back" and "Turn Me On". The NWOBHM-effect is fully present on both "Love Child" and "Losers And Winners", while the cool "Head Over Heels" silently slides into a powermetal exploration.

And now time for hardrock / heavymetal's gigantic anthem. The title-track for "Balls To The Wall" is the calling we've been waiting for. Slick and sick, the powerchord crashes into a molten-metal mash. Imminent and now immortal, the destructive track signifies pride, passion and power. One of the last classic-track from this golden era of true heavymetal creations.

ACCEPT were now part of Europe's top-players, along the bombastic Brits ...Udo and the Solingen-boys are truely restless and wild. RIAA-certified Gold, their attack on America was initiated, sadly West-Hollywood's hardrock rapidly took over the scene. ACCEPT would present 1985's Metal Heart LP to an ever changing scene: caught between glam ...and the new wave of thrashmetal.
