September 5, 1975 - 2025: 50 years of: Rainbow.

A union made in rocknroll heaven.

Another supergroup would burn hardrock's foundations to the ground. A UK / US coalition, led by Ritchie Blackmore's top marksmanship and ex-ELF frontmen Ronnie James Dio. Between Heaven and Hell ...hard-rocknroll morphs into a RAINBOW.

The hot boogie riffraff of "Man On The Silver Mountain" and "Self Portrait" boils blood to a dangerous point. A white "Snake Chamer" drives the house wild, as also displayed on "If You Don't Like Rock 'N' Roll" ...a statement that should never be uttered.

Two reprises: a wicked upbeat vibe possesses QUATERMASS's "Black Sheep Of The Family" and THE YARBIRDS's "Still I'm Sad" gets extra overdrive ...while the bluesy "Catch The Rainbow" ...made blind men cried.

The birth of a monolith, a rock hard Stonehenge, that would inadvertently lead Ronnie Dio on a collision with 1980's BLACK SABBATH. RAINBOW's next stratospheric appearance shall be 1976's Rising LP ...featuring ex-Jeff Beck Group Cozy Powell and future DIO bassist Jimmy Bain.

September 5, 1990 - 2025: 35 years of: The Razor's Edge.
..could we come again please ?

1990: the final-lap. The end of the 80s, another decade and a brand new vibe. Electrified by Lights ...Camera ...Revolution, Cowboys From Hell and Pornograffitti CDs ...a newfound life and a rebelicious burst of energy ...walking on the razor's edge.

Out of a jailbreak on a rocknroll damnation, the love hungry men have the biggest balls of them all. Following 1988's Blow Up Your Video LP, rocknroll shall ride on the razor's edge ...behind the wheel are AC/DC.
..we've been:
"Thunderstruck", the new crowd-moving anthem is born. The build-up from Angus's guitar, to the choir, to the extra-loud tom-toms, to Cliff's bass, to Malcolm's rhythms, to Brian's rap ...all heats-up to the boiling-point and the volcanic explosion is felt from miles around. Hard-rocknroll is alive and well.

Locked, loaded and "Fire Your Guns" a fast and gritty track that lights up any set. The heavy title-track "The Razor's Edge" is a reminder that this band is all about heavyrock, while the kinky Christmas-gift of "Mistress For Christmas" might be too much for some of you to handle. The slick power-chords of the cash and carry "Money Talks" stuns on impact, while the decibel-hostile track #8 kindly and warmly, reminds you that you ain't goin' nowhere, as this late night pretty lady "Got You By The Balls".

Having stood tall against the hair-bands and the aggression of thrash, welcome back AC/DC, we've missed you ...and welcome aboard on drums Chris Slade. RIAA-certified 6x Platinum ...AC/DC bitchslapped the scene back to Square One. Now once again the biggest act in the world, but also the only band of the genre to fill stadiums across the globe, yearly. No trend has or will stop them ...not even Seattle.

The Live double-CD is a fine collection of crowds around the world, culminating with the monstrous Monsters Of Rock stop at Moscow's Tushino Airfield in 1991. The East opened-up to the West, along about a million rock-fans in attendance.

Surviving the 80s and now kicking the door on the 90s, they want blood and they'll get it ...as proven by 1995's Ballbreaker CD.

September 1985 - 2025: 40 years of: Touch Of Sin.

Razor-sharp rock.

Outta hot water, after 1984's Danger Zone LP, the band jumped right back into the naughty stuff. Falling from grace, Sinner now masters the touch of sin.

The DNA never lies, these rebels are "Born To Rock". Filled with attitude, the loud party is ruled with "Out Of Control" "Bad Girl". On the escape-route, the lazer-fast "Too Late To Runaway" rips through the lonely Autobahn, while the "Shout !" war-cry is pure at the Devil wailing.

Eons away from the big Eurometal commercial hits, the original SINNER keeps the true flame alive. Armed with an iron will ...they provide high-octane German metal.

Gettin' close to judgement day, the band would tease the arenarock-format, with 1986's Comin' Out Fighting LP.

September 2, 1990 - 2025: 35 years of: Subconscious Terror.

The formula: the UK, doom-death and motherf**kin' Barney.

While 1989-90's deathmetal was about speed and aggression ...some bands explored other shades of death. Great-Britain's underground scene was build on punks, yet the late 80s saw two separate branches of extreme-metal emerge: grindcore with NA**LM DEATH, CARCASS and BOLT THROWER ...and doom-deathmetal with PARADISE LOST, CATHEDRAL and Benediction. Here's some: darkness and cold deathmetal.

The eerie intro of "Portal To Your Phobias" brings your worst fears to life has the epic title-track for "Subconscious Terror" slowly sets in with a chilling "Yeeeaaah ah-ah-aaahhh!" maniacal laugh. Pure morbid magic, wrapped in underground guitar-tones and mid-paced rhythms.

The HELLHAMMER / CELTIC FROST worship continues on "Grizzled Finale", the at dawn they sleep of "Eternal Eclipse" and live devourment of "Spit Forth The Dead". Simple thrash-riffs and monstrous throat-work builds-up and swallows you into oblivion ...an evil benediction.

Frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway recorded with BENEDICTION and jumped ship to a faster pace by leading the NA**LM DEATH gang. Yet his roots lies deep within the old-school, featuring the Tom Warrior "Ugh" and Kam Lee "Hey" deathmetal shouts. Eternal classick war-cries.

BENEDICTION would enlist new singer Dave Ingram and propose more downtuned metal with 1991's The Grand Leveller CD.

September 1, 1985 - 2025: 40 years of: Asylum.

More murders in high heels.

In unison with the colorful 1984 Animalize LP, those Cadillac dreams would finally pay off. During the West-Hollywood sleaze-hardrock build-up, KISS's cock-rock fitted like a glove.

Screaming aloud, they are the "King Of The Mountain" ...Paul Stanley never sounded so good. With an appetite for destruction, the riffology of "Any Way You Slice It" and "Radar For Love" cuts passion to bits.

Both speed-bursts of "I'm Alive" and "Love's A Deadly Weapon" teases actual metal, as the latter track borrows a riff from the band PLASMATICS. The leading MTV-singles for the audacious "Who Wants To Be Lonely" and the ultra kink of "Uh ! All Night" sat TVs afire, nationwide.

Adding Bruce Kulick on lead-guitars and still makin' love, KISS's domination was under heavy fire by the Sunset Strip young guns. The mid 80s would be a literal rocknroll hell, as the excesses of hardrock's new era were in full expansion. After the extensive heat of BON JOVI and MÖTLEY CRÜE's theatre, the doors of American arenarock were now opened for business.

Fully eXposed and RIAA-certified Gold outta the gates, the glamorized KISS would bring more tough love with 1987's Crazy Nights LP.

August 30, 1985 - 2025: 40 years of: Speak English Or Die.

This is not a drill.

Lewd and lovely, rough and re****ed, fearless and f**kable: anti-PC before PC was even a thing ...because f**k everybody. By 1985, speedmetal was running at full RPM, rabid monsters like SLAYER, RAZOR and KREATOR were the ultimate s**t in the speed-department ...yet they have seen nothing yet.

ANTHRAX's Scott Ian and Charlie Benante had some free time after the recording-sessions for Spreading The Disease LP. A few songs demoed, a call to buddy Danny Lilker and motherf**ker loud mouth in chief Billy Milano and voila: the STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH platoon moshes into town.

A brutal truth.

The mosh, the riff, the military step ..."March Of The S.O.D." is a fat mutherfockin' stomper. One of metal's simplest and strongest riff. And now, salute as your immediate superior is here: "Sargent D & The S.O.D." pushes, destroys and thrashes everything. Two back-to-back tracks: 3:50sec of raunchiness that forever encompassed S.O.D. as the ultimate thrashcore renegades. Fear them !

The rhythmic "United Forces" rejoices and crushes in a downstroke of fury, hail Scott's right wrist. More speed and more hate and more speedhate: "Chromatic Death" is the thrashiest 0:44sec champion of all-time. Got yer bowl 'n Cherrios ready little boy ? ...d'ya got some "Milk" ? The ugliest morning-wood ever, blue-print for what's-to-become grindcore, while both circle-pit generators "Milano Mosh" and "Fist Banging Mania" are sure to leave you with some loose teeth. S.O.D. also gives a quick P.S.A.: no matter your race, your color, your ethnicity, your religion ...ya betta "Speak English Or Die".

Semper Fi, Mosh Or Die !

Lightning in an bottle in the thrash-field, no other album possesses the blunt-power Speak English Or Die LP has. Hardcore mixed with thrashmetal equals crossover: the ultimate mix for instant brutality NYHC-style, the quintessential be all, end all of thrashcore. The S.O.D. experience is a must-hear chaotic attraction.

Ian and Benante returning full-time duty in ANTHRAX, Lilker explored thrashcore with NUCLEAR ASSAULT, while Milano kept the hate commin' with his new band, the simply entitled: METHOD OF DESTRUCTION aka M.O.D. Reunited for a one night only world-tour, 1992's Live At Budokan CD still shows grit and adolescent energy. Recorded at The Ritz in NYC, the title pokes fun for their imaginative global success.

STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH would come back to tape and associated tours, with 1999's Bigger Than The Devil CD ...in a very different now highly diluted metal-market.

August 28, 1990 - 2025: 35 years of: For Whose Advantage ?

The UK was now in the mix.

While actual heavymetal originated from this lovely island, the fact is: 84% of Earth's thrash is American-bred. During the last moshpit circle-lap, Xentrix presents their version of polished progressive-thrashmetal.

The slick metal captures us with "Questions". From mosh to melodies, "The Human Condition" is tamed to perfection, along with the menacing melting unisons of "False Ideals".

A blast of burst flashes, as the "Black Embrace" raise the mercury in the red, while the acoustics of "New Beginnings" softly sooths the mood. Through dire times, society is "Kept In The Dark" and yet the unanswered remains, all of this is "For Whose Advantage ?"

Following XENTRIX's sweet vengeance in speedmetal; 1989's Shattered Existence LP, the band now opted for a more mature outlook. The great Bay-Area ...straight outta Great Britain. Their next trick, the Kin CD, would provide more cool ghost bustin' ...in a very very very different 1992.

August 27, 1990 - 2025: 35 years of: Empire.

Building an empire: East-Side meets West-Side, downtown.

From Bellevue, a borough of Seattle, yes the Seattle, comes the progressive-rock giant that would forever push the idea of concept-albums into hardrock's glossary.

On top since 1988's perfection story-concept tour-de-force Operation: Mindcrime LP ...Queensrÿche would now tame the rock-mainstream. Smarter and wiser, the quintet would deliver RIAA-certified Triple Platinum metal. Keep in mind that back in the 1989-90 era, only arenarock and hardrock acts were part of this exclusive-club ...make way Sunset-boys ...the Queen Of The Reich is here.

The ravaging opening in "Best I Can" is a strong statement, musically and vocally. The attack is imminent and the crystal-clear production elevate the experience into sonic boom. More loud rock is found on "The Thin Line", "Another Rainy Night (Without You)" and the MTV-favorite sing-along "Jet City Woman".

The heavy-stamina title-track "Empire", displays solid rhythms and serious social views. Political-rock ? ...this is a career-long mindcrime. "Resistance" hooks you and doesn't let go, while "Hand On Heart" is another slick heavyrock number featuring the explosions of jazz-influenced drummer Scott Rockenfield.

And now, it's night-time.

The #1 symphonicballad of the era, one of the band's crowning achievement and one of hardrock's most beloved. The gentle 5:48sec flamenco-guitar driven melody brings the progrock element into the powerballad arena. Miles away from the clichés, the melodramatic "Silent Lucidity" is supported by a full blown Michael Kamen orchestra with both violin and cello under-tones. Soft to the ear yet incisive spiritually, "Lucidity" would open a door for QUEENSRŸCHE into the mainstream-audience and break-away from the metal-stigmata.

The high quality musicianship found within is next to none. The Wilton + DeGarmo lead-guitar duo is worthy of both Downing + Tipton and Smith + Murray legendary power-lines. At the end of the decade, far away from the spandex of L.A., top melodicrock bands like QUEENSRŸCHE and SAVATAGE, kept the spirit pure and the flame alive.

The successful Building Empire 1990-91 Tour featured an Act II: the full Operation: Mindcrime LP in it's entirety. Ear-candy that would become a staple in the band's live-legacy. The tribe got a taste of the mainstream, cherish it coz a flannel tidal-wave is commin' our way.

QUEENSRŸCHE's next surgical strike, shall appear into a very, very different rock-landscape: 1994's Promised Land CD.

August 25, 1990 - 2025: 35 years of: Stress Related.

The other Vegas brothel.

The city of sins, casinos, high-rise hotels and home of RIGHTEOUS PIGS. Not the first American grindcore act, as this title applies to Michigan Gods REPULSION, yet the PIGS were next in line.

1989's Live And Learn debut-LP was released to lukewarm reception. Now fully moshed between thrash and hardcore, punk and grind ...this stress-test is a brutal collection.

With a NYHC vibe, the final "Eulogy is read. A brutal blast as the "Open Wound" is ripped, while "Overdose" and "Sickened By His Own Existence" vomits all over this scene. DIY and deadly, the acid on contact of "Fly The Friendly Skies" and "Boundries Unknown" are vile defecations ...the perfect hybrid for fans of both DISCHARGE and CARCASS.

After the PIGS's dissolution, guitarist Mitch Harris would join NA**LM DEATH and craft the seminal deathgrind Harmony Corruption opus. There would not be another RIGHTEOUS PIGS recording.

On a personal note, I got into RP in 1990 when a local radio-host said about them: "Picture four frustrated youth, fan of serial killers and chainsaw massacres, writing songs locked in a smelly garage" ...the DJ then played "Open Wound", I was hooked, thanks Uncle Norm.

August 24, 1990 - 2025: 35 years of: Time's Up.

On the edge.

After 1988's trend-breaking Vivid LP, our glamour boys would provide more cool shades of Living Colour.

Full on NYHC, as "Time's Up" blasts into Mach IV ...a brutal bitch-slap. The lovely constant jackhammering of "Type" and "Pride" bring VU-meters close to the melting-point, matched by the loud-shouts of both "New Jack Theme" and "Elvis Is Dead".

Drenched into this "Information Overload" these lively colours shine, while the earthy freestyle of "Solace Of You" and jazzy-powerballad of "Love Rear Its Ugly Head" grounds the band back into traditions.

1990's scene was morphing, after a decade of loud arenarock ...alt-metal was taming the alt-mainstream. RIAA-certified Gold and fan-certified cool, LIVING COLOUR were imposing a new standard. The band would zoom in on a darker sound, with a darker edge, a complete fu**in facewash: 1993's Stain CD.

Hardmusic's facelift.
The year is 1990 and some bands are changing the course of history. Not all from Seattle, yet, but a movement for a different outlook on hardrock and metal. From CIRCUS OF POWER to LIVING COLOUR to SCATTERBRAIN, to the chaos of MINISTRY ...the seeds are planted for the 90s royal-rumble. On the edge of alt-rock ...the Devil put Alice in Chains here.

"WATCH WHERE YOU SPIT !"

Imminent facewash as "We Die Young" rips Marshalls apart. Riffraffin' to perfection, these veins "Bleed The Freak", as the metal-mosh of "It Ain't Like That" slowly tightens the noose, while the leading MTV-single of the piledriving "Man In The Box", cracked Charts and associated skulls.

The hard-blues flair of "Sea Of Sorrow" drowns with tears, as the morbid melancholic Layne Staley serenade of "Confusion" mesmerizes into an hypnotic state. Diametrically, a boogie mood lits the hall with both "Put You Down" and the bass-driven "I Know Somethin' (Bout You)".

NoCal Alt-Metal.

RIAA-certified Triple Platinum, the cards were set, the game was about to change. But before Seattle's commercial take-over, ALICE IN CHAINS would be fully metalized, taking part of Summer 1991's Clash Of The Titans US-tour. A caravan featuring reigning thrashmetal gods: SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX.

Dam that river, with the odd men out back in writing-mode and issuing February 1992's acoustic Sap MCD ...ALICE IN CHAINS would soon bodyslam the global-scene with the overdriven dominant Dirt CD.

Another entry ...from the animal kingdom.

After the SCORPIONS, WHITESNAKE and recent LEPPARD, hard-rocknroll now presents: the Tygers Of Pan Tang.

The gates gave in, the riot is imminent, as the loud assault of "Euthanasia" and "Slave To Freedom" rings. Young and obnoxious, these "Wild Catz" really want "Money". Overdriven classicrock by testosterone, the raw "Insanity" feeds the backstreet "Killers" with a purpose, as the bass-lick of "Fireclown" spreads fear into the competition.

England's ultimate sucker-punch: The New Wave Of British Heavy-Metal.

The year is 1980 and the island would be swarmed by ANGEL WITCH, IRON MAIDEN, GIRLSCHOOL and the motorcycle men of SAXON ...a brutal take-over ...a neat experience.
