I’ve written this post so many times and never posted it.

Why? It felt too personal. It wasn’t bringing any value to anyone. Why would anyone actually care?

But I actually, think I’m going to post it this time because I feel like saying it out loud might help me get over the hurdle I’ve been faced with over the last few months. I also want to let people know it's ok to be 'human' with your business.

If you have noticed, maybe you haven’t - but I’ve been awol. I’ve been completely recluse on social media and as a social media manager, that’s not really great advertising for myself! 🙃

The thing is, my Dad passed away at the beginning of February - this actually feels like TMI but I can’t be vague with that part. I won’t go into detail as he was a super private man but for the reason for this post, I feel like it’s a vital part.

I guess I’m telling you because I’d rather be honest and say that actually, it’s ok to have blips of silence or take it easy in another aspect of your business because you’re a human being and we’re not robots.

I’m also a Mum of two neurospicy children, I suspect they got their neurosparkle from me and if anything this year so far has taught me that when your plate is full. It’s ok to get another plate and slide some stuff over to that plate and let that plate do eff all for a while. 😆

There are two reasons why I am posting this:

1: To get back on the horse and maybe start doing my own marketing again.

2: To show that it’s ok to prioritise yourself and take a break from aspects of your business when you need to. The world did not stop! Hurrah!

Lastly, a piece of Scottish advice from my Dad:

'Keep the heid!' which means, ‘Keep calm under pressure.'

I kept my ‘heid’ by giving myself some grace during a difficult time and I hope that if you take something from this post that it’s ok to set boundaries with yourself, with your own business.

They had the BEST TIME at Crufts! 🙌

Not only was it downright exciting, I got to meet ALL THE DOGS and meet up with colleagues (friends really) who I’ve known for years and only ever met up via zoom.

Yesterday was a core memory for me - I can’t wait to do it again! 🥰

In the vast expanse that is social media… amidst the endless stream of posts, how can you ensure your message is heard?

Some people resort to being antagonistic/spikey /salty on socials and it’s made me wonder… is being antagonistic a viable strategy?

I don’t know about you… but I can smell a Chat GPT Social media caption from a mile away!

…and I must say, AI really interests me, I love to see what it can do and I actually do utilise AI myself - it’s like a colleague that I can bounce ideas off of, it teaches me things I didn’t know (I fact check them of course) but still, it’s awesome!

But when I see a Chat GPT caption it makes me instantly switch off.

I know it’s not from the person behind the brand, that they don’t care enough to connect with me with their caption. They also don’t have time to write the caption, so why should I take the time to read it?

IF you are going to use AI for your captions, at least proof it, remove the American language, insert bits of your own personality - make it sound like you.

Tell me.. can you spot AI caption? let me know! 👀

Things I’ve learnt in 2023…

1: It’s okay to put your phone down - the world doesn’t stop turning because I’ve not replied to everyone on Whatsapp (if you’re in my Whatsapp you will know how awesome I am at leaving you on read - it’s not on purpose!). 😆🌎

2: I’ve learnt to people please a bit less - it’s taken me a while, and I’m still not all the way there, but I’m getting better! (I still people please, but not to the point where I’m completely screwing myself over).

3: Pet people are still my people.

4: No matter how much you prep to come across as ‘normal’ in high pressure social situations - the quirk will find a way to come out regardless. 🙃

5: I’m a Trello Loyalist - I want to switch to Asana but can’t seem to make the shift. I just bloody love those Trello boards.

6: That I won’t be hanging up my organic social media management hat - this time last year I was gunning for paid ads and still do paid ads but I don’t think I’ll ever completely move away from organic, despite it being a cruel mistress, at times!

7: I still don’t want anything to do with Twitter / X. Even more so this year!

8: Bluey is a girl. Mind blown.

9: That data is still cool. Trends, new platforms, social media updates, they all come and go - but data… always remains steadfast and dependable when you need to make informed decisions. 🤓

10: I’m good at making pancakes. Just ask my kids.

Confession - selling makes me awkward! 🙈

I know I'm not alone in this feeling of pure ick when it comes to selling your services.

But I want you to remember something... maybe even write it down on a post-it note and stick it near your desk.

Serve, not sell. 👌

Do you believe in your product and think it can help them?

If you're writing a selling post, let that lead the way. For example, you might be a dog trainer who runs recall courses. There are people out there who struggle with recall, so you need to let them know about what you offer. You are doing them a disservice by NOT telling them.

It's always a wise idea to flip the narrative on your mindset (serve, not sell!) when the ick feeling creeps in.

It doesn't really matter what you post on your stories, but I want you to consider this.

Which Instagram stories do you watch the most?

Is there anything they do really well?

Why do you keep coming back?

Maybe they share things they do on a day-to-day basis or behind the scenes that you wouldn't think are worth sharing.

That said, what do I recommend?

You know, the things that make you, you! 🙂

Don't overthink stories! I recently shared a clip of my robot hoover (his name is Dave!) - I got so many DM's about Dave, and I had conversations with people I've never had before.

As for frequency in stories- 5-10 a day is perfect, but don't beat yourself up if you don't achieve this!

PS - Story views fluctuate, it's normal.

So today, post something (anything you like!) to your stories and tag me so I can see! 👌

I’m not someone who actively shared their personal life on their social media - in the business of my personal! It’s not an active choice, it’s just something I don’t naturally think to do!

I think it’s completely important to show your human side, but you shouldn’t feel like you need to share your personal life - it’s yours after all!

Instead, show what you’re comfortable with and the best thing you can show is your PERSONALITY!

Low engagement can be really discombobulating! 🙃

Also, it’s not a quick fix either - it requires time and consistency (sometimes we don’t have the time for this right!?)

Here are 5 things you can do when you see those engagement numbers taking a nose dive!

1. Play your greatest hits! Have a look at your old posts, what ones received high engagement? Chances are they will again, repurpose those bad boys.

2. Add a CTA to every post - something simple like ‘drop me a high five in the comments'. ASK for that engagement.

3. Make sure you’re keeping on top of replying to comments and dm’s. If someone puts a comment on the post and they don’t get a reply - are they likely to do this again? Nope.

4. On Instagram, make sure you use the features that are available, the stickers are so good for getting quick engagement!

5. Do your research - read the room! Use your stories and your posts to find out what your community needs right now. This is not only an engagement call to action, it’s also building upon your relationship with your community.

Let’s talk about… marketing gurus. 🤓

You know, the ones who shout really loud and tend to be quite opinionated and make huge promises on what you can achieve when you work with them… but never really get into the details or talk about testing or results. Actually, they talk a whole lot about themselves.

Yeah… them! 🙃

So before you buy into that ‘guru’... remember:

Every business is unique, and there is no one size fits all solution. It's important not to settle for generic solutions or cookie cutter strategies!

Results rather than hype - Let's move past the flashy videos, and the borderline knobby LinkedIn posts, and concentrate on tangible results and genuine success stories. Ask the guru for case studies!

Remember that building a brand takes time. Avoid those promising overnight success; sustainable growth takes dedication and patience.

Finally, here are some red flags to look out for when you think you may have come across a guru:

🚩 Shouting loudly about themselves.

🚩 Being obnoxiously controversial on social media (PS - this is not a marketing strategy…)

🚩 Not actually seeing any tangible results.

🚩 They put down peers to make themselves look better.

🚩 They excessively use Chat GPT (again, not a marketing strategy).

TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️

I'm about to talk about account hacking. 😬

It's something you think will never happen to you... but it can!

Make sure you are taking all the steps to keep your Instagram account safe by checking your security settings right in the app.

Switch on Two-Factor Authentication - a tiny ball ache to do... but could very well save your account!

Also, don't use the same password for each platform and make sure you've encrypted each password so they are horrifically impossible to crack!

Every day there are accounts being hacked - so why don't we make it super duper hard for them to do so?

Apologies if this post gave you the fear! However, why don't we take 2 minutes to secure our accounts now so our future selves will thank us?
