After 5½ wonderful years, we’re saying goodbye to our Beverley shop — with full hearts and deep gratitude.
What started in 2019 as a simple idea — to make zero waste shopping more accessible — has grown into something far more meaningful: a little shop with a big heart, built on eco values, ethical choices, and community connection.
Together, we’ve championed refills over rubbish, supported independent makers, and shown that a small business can lead with purpose. We’ve helped people tread more lightly, think more consciously, and do their bit — one scoop at a time.
We made it through a global pandemic, turning the shop into a flour hub when shelves were bare. We served customers at the door during lockdowns, swapped stories over paper bags, and learned to adapt in ways we never imagined.
And when we thought we might not be able to carry on, the incredible support of Wykeland and the Flemingate team gave us a new home and a fresh start in 2023. Without them, these last 18 months simply wouldn’t have been possible, and we’ll always be thankful for their kindness and belief in us.
After a lot of reflection, we’ve decided to close the shop — not because it failed, but because right now, our focus needs to shift.
We’re facing some personal family challenges that require our full attention, and stepping back from the shop is a necessary part of giving those we love — and ourselves — the time and space we need.
Like many independents, we’ve also felt the squeeze — rising costs, vanishing suppliers, and the constant balancing act of running a values-led business. But more than anything, we’re proud. Proud of what we’ve created. Proud of what we’ve stood for. And proud of what we’ve done together.
Our last trading day will be Saturday 19th April, and from today, Thursday 17th, we’ll be offering 25% off everything in-store as a thank you — and a send-off.
But this isn’t the end.
Our website — www.therefilljar.co.uk — will continue, and we’ll still be offering many of your favourites online, with the same care and values we’ve always believed in.
To our wonderful staff — thank you for your passion, warmth, and good humour.
To our customers — thank you for every refill, every conversation, every reused jar.
Together, we’ve saved tonnes of packaging, supported more ethical ways of shopping, and proved that small businesses with big values still matter.
This isn’t a sad ending. It’s a celebration.
We built something good — and we did it together.
