My friends and I went to visit 📍🏰Castelnou Castle, Pyrenees Orientales and we stopped to get something to eat (local and traditional) before we started to explore further.

Did you ever try Roussquilles and Bunyettes ? They are two traditional pastries from Roussillon, a region in southern France influenced by Catalan culture.

Roussquilles are round, soft, and lightly flavored cookies, covered with a white glaze made from sugar and egg whites. Traditionally, they are scented with orange blossom, lemon, or anise. Their tender texture and sweetness make them very popular in the region, especially as a dessert or served with coffee.

Bunyettes are thin, flat fritters that are slightly crispy and often flavored with orange blossom. They are traditionally prepared during Easter in Roussillon. Bunyettes are fried and then sprinkled with sugar, giving them a delicate sweet taste. They are commonly enjoyed during family gatherings and religious celebrations.

We felt thrown back to the 10th century. This castle was a strategic fortress for the Viscounts of Castelnou and was guarding the nearby plains of Roussillon against invaders from neighboring kingdoms, particularly the Kingdom of Aragon and other competing powers in the region.

During the Middle Ages, the Roussillon area was a contested border zone between France and Spain, and the castle played a critical role in protecting the territory from both external threats and local uprisings.

The castle is perched on a hilltop and offers a panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including the Canigou mountain and the Mediterranean plains. This made it a highly defensive stronghold at the time.

The castle felt at some stage into disrepair and went through several restorations from the 19th century. It’s nowadays a very well preserved example of medieval architecture and a popular tourist attraction greeting 40k visitors every year.

Charming venue, nice cuisine, from scenery to food presentation, service quality, workspaces kept clean during the service, staff being very smiling welcoming and caring, easy parking nearby in lot or streets and free after 7pm… The ambiance and service at Brasserie Chavant Voiron were equally impressive, making it a memorable dining experience. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
