I’m proud to be a tiny part of the institution that is Thompsons Garage, especially the legendary Funkarama Wednesdays, now into its 23rd year.

Stepping into that iconic booth is something I never take for granted. Some people may think I cruised in, but I didn’t. I worked my ass off for years, navigating my way through the ranks, steadily building my brand & reputation. My fellow residents can say the same.

I’ve had more knock backs than most. There’s some that won’t believe that, but it’s true. And I still get knock backs today. I’ve had multiple already in 2024 and we’re only halfway through the year. But the reason you don’t know this is because I never air my knock backs publicly. They’re for me to handle and navigate. I know everything is part of the journey, and if I handle myself professionally with dignity & keep building my brand, every knock back will somehow lead to an even better opportunity.

Ironically, it was a knock back that got me into Thompsons. I was a resident in another Belfast club, new owners came in, treated me poorly, and my time there suddenly ended. I didn’t air my grievances in public - I simply walked away with my chin up and trusted something else would come my way. No lie, the first person in the industry to call me was Mark McCourt. He somehow heard I had been mistreated in the other place. He knew of my abilities and professionalism, and invited me to come play a gig at Thompsons. I’ve been there ever since.

Mark is the salt of the earth. When he sees loyalty, reliability and professionalism in someone, he reciprocates it ten fold. I’m proud he’s one of my best mates. And the core team at Thompsons are incredible. There have been so many changes in staff, and I’ve seen countless PR managers over my time there. Funk has always risen to the top. No one person has ever been solely responsible for it’s success. The reason for its success is the feeling of family that resonates through the place, built around respect, trust & professionalism - and never entitlement. All this comes directly from Mark, Stevie & the whole Thompsons family ❤️
