Belfast City Council is celebrating the overwhelming success of its 2024 Pre-Loved Toy Appeal, which provided a much-needed boost to families across the city during the festive season. This year’s appeal, run in partnership with East Belfast Mission, saw over 27 van loads of toys collected from the city’s recycling centres, benefiting more than 1,500 children.

The appeal underscores the council’s commitment to a circular economy by promoting the reuse of toys, reducing waste, and supporting families facing financial challenges. The toys, donated at the city’s recycling centres, were sorted and distributed by East Belfast Mission and their charity partners, ensuring they reached children in need across Belfast.

Councillor Ruth Brooks, Chair of the People and Communities Committee, expressed her gratitude: “The success of this year’s Pre-Loved Toy Appeal highlights the generosity of our residents and the power of collaboration. Thanks to their kindness, over 1,500 children received gifts this Christmas, spreading joy during a time when many families are struggling. This initiative not only strengthens our communities but also demonstrates the importance of reusing and recycling to reduce waste. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported this effort.”

Michael Sloan, from East Belfast Mission, added: "This appeal has had an incredible impact, with over £50,000 worth of toys redistributed to families in need. The project also brought together more than 90 volunteers, who played a crucial role in sorting and distributing donations. It’s inspiring to see how the appeal continues to grow each year, making a real difference in the lives of children and families. We’re grateful for the council’s partnership and the community’s support.”

This year’s appeal also had significant environmental benefits, diverting approximately 10 tonnes of toys from disposal and saving an estimated 9 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions compared to purchasing new items.

Belfast recycling centres and amenity sites will also be closed on Wednesday, 1 January, reopening on Thursday, 2 January for your Christmas recycling, trees and additional household waste.

Belfast recycling centres and amenity sites will be closed on Wednesday, 1 January, reopening on Thursday, 2. They can accept a wide range of recyclables, as well as additional household waste that can’t be recycled. Real Christmas trees can also be brought along for recycling, while smaller trees can be cut up and put in household brown bins.

Oxfam Ireland have partnered with photographer Collette Creative to challenge the fast fashion status quo.

Oxfam Ireland created an editorial-style fashion shoot showcasing stunning festive outfits that will leave you shocked to discover they’re all sourced from Oxfam's newest Superstore in Holywood —not high-end boutiques!

The campaign sends a powerful message about sustainability in the holiday season, a time notorious for overconsumption and waste.

Fast Fashion’s December Problem

Every year, seasonal fashion trends flood the market from December 1st to 31st, epitomizing the disposable nature of fast fashion. From sequined party dresses to novelty Christmas jumpers, these items are often designed to be worn once or twice, then discarded. “While it’s natural to want to celebrate in style, the environmental cost is staggering,” said Fiona Anderson, Manager of the Oxfam Holywood Superstore.
"Around 95% of Christmas jumpers are made of plastic-based materials, contributing to the microplastic pollution crisis. In the UK alone, 12 million Christmas jumpers are purchased annually, with nearly a quarter ending up as waste after just one wear! We have to break the cycle of disposable fashion, through the images we created we want to challenge the perceptions people have about second hand clothing showing how fabulous you can look without breaking the bank or harming the planet. It’s about celebrating with creativity and conscience." said Fiona.

A Call to Action: Reimagine Festive Fashion

Oxfam Ireland encourages shoppers to embrace a more sustainable approach this holiday season:

👗 Reuse or Swap: Rediscover hidden gems in your wardrobe or trade festive outfits with friends and family.
👔 Shop Second-hand: Oxfam shops are treasure troves of unique pre-loved clothing, including standout festive finds.
🧥 Upcycle or Decorate: Add your personal touch to existing outfits with festive embellishments.
Rent or Borrow: Look into rental services or borrow a statement piece for the season.

Gifts That Give Back

Beyond festive fashion, Oxfam Ireland offers its “Gifts with Purpose” collection, a range of ethically sourced items and Fairtrade products. From vibrant home décor to practical garden tools, these gifts not only spread holiday cheer but also fund Oxfam’s life-changing work, including providing clean water, empowering women, and fighting poverty globally. Every purchase in Oxfam shops helps create real impact, proving that shopping second-hand isn’t just sustainable—it’s a powerful way to give back.

Shocking Statistics

The campaign highlights eye-opening facts to inspire change:
👕 The UK spends £220 million annually on novelty jumpers, a staggering reflection of the throwaway culture.
✨ 33 million sequined garments are purchased each season, yet sequins—made of non-recyclable plastics—pollute the planet for hundreds of years.
💦 2,700 liters of water are needed to produce just one cotton T-shirt, illustrating the environmental toll of textile production.

Join the Movement

This festive season, let your wardrobe reflect not just your style but also your values. Visit your nearest Oxfam Ireland shop, including the new Oxfam Holywood Superstore in Co. Down, to discover unique, sustainable finds. Let’s make this Christmas one to remember—not for its waste, but for its impact.

Belfast City Airport has issued advice for passengers taking to the skies over the festive period, during which it expects to welcome up to 10,000 passengers a day through its terminal.

Mark Beattie, Chief Operating Officer, said:

“Not surprisingly, Christmas is one of the busiest times of year at Belfast City Airport as passengers jet off and head home to spend the holiday with friends and family.

“With flights departing and arriving from the UK and Europe, plus destinations further afield via our hub airport partners, London Heathrow, Amsterdam, and Manchester, we have extra staff on hand to ensure everyone’s journeys are as smooth and efficient as possible.”

Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport in accordance with their airline's guidance and to check the relevant guidelines on what can and cannot be brought through security in carry-on luggage.

Mark continued:

“We recently finished a £3m investment into enhancing our security processes, which means that passengers can keep liquids, gels, and pastes, including toiletries and cosmetics, up to 100ml and large electronic devices in their cabin baggage as they complete security checks at the airport.

“We pride ourselves on our speedy security processing times and have additional measures in place to ensure we deliver an exceptional passenger experience for all.”

This year will see the return of Belfast City Airport’s ever-popular gift-wrapping station, giving passengers the option to wrap any presents opened during the security screening process.

To bring some further festive cheer for travellers, Belfast City Airport will also welcome its adopted school choirs to the main concourse throughout the month of December.

Mark added:

“Our aim is to continually go above and beyond for our passengers, and the return of our adopted schools’ choirs – and the introduction of our new staff choir, the Belfast City Belters – is certain to bring a smile to their faces.

“These extra touches help make Christmas a special time of year for anyone passing through the airport, and we look forward to helping our passengers relax, unwind, and enjoy their journey.”

Tesco stores across the country have been overwhelmed by the generosity of customers who donated to the 12th annual Tesco Winter Food Collection.

In Northern Ireland, the collection saw customers donate 78,331 meals to make a difference in their local community. Every item donated provides much-needed support for charities FareShare and Trussell in the run up to Christmas.

With both charities continuing to need support, Tesco shoppers can continue to donate food at permanent collection points at every Tesco store in the UK or make a donation after their online shop. You can also donate at https://fareshare.donr.com/tesco until February 2025.

Elvis Yourself a Merry Little Christmas at The MAC is everything you want it to be.

It’s hilarious, heartwarming, festive, musical, and packed full of Norn Ironisms. This superb cast of 3 includes Caroline Curran, Rhodri Lewis and Patrick Buchanan. Caroline takes on the challenge of 5 superb characters. I just look at Caroline and I smile, she oozes comedy and joy.

The comedy takes place in a small family run airport, the Barra Best Regional Airport (expect lots of Barra and weatherman jokes), in the Keep Er Lit Lounge. The lounge sees characters come and go, old friends catching up, chance meetings, people supporting each other, and of course Elvis, all 3 of him.

It’s a short production, just over 60 minutes, but it packs a festive punch and we recommend you go and see it!
