The Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána have urged drivers to slow down this May bank holiday weekend.

Provisional analysis from the RSA shows that 69 lives have been lost on Irish roads this year, 16 more than the equivalent period in 2023.

Provisional records from An Garda Síochána and the PSNI showed that 34 people died in fatal road crashes across the island of Ireland last May, compared to 18 fatalities in April 2023.

A woman in her 50s was hospitalised when the car she was driving was involved in a crash with an articulated truck in Co Cork on 18 April. Gardaí said the two-vehicle crash happened on the N28 in Carr’s Hill, Cork, around 1.15pm on Thursday afternoon. Gardaí have an enforcement operation over the weekend as they say the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend is a ‘period where the risk of a fatal or serious injury collision is high’.

The Road Safety Authority has urged all road users, including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to slow down and keep a safe distance from other road users over the Easter weekend.

In 2023, there were five deaths in the State over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend and 18 serious injuries.

Irish writer Paul Lynch has been appointed Maynooth University Distinguished Writing Fellow.

The 2023 Booker Prize Winner is a multi-award-winning author of five novels ‘making him one of Ireland’s most prolific and critically-acclaimed contemporary authors’.

He is the writer of the Booker Prize winning novel Prophet Song (2023), Red Sky in the Morning (2013), The Black Snow (2014), Grace (2017), and Beyond the Sea (2019).

Met Éireann has warned that it will be ‘cold and blustery’ on Thursday 8th February, with a band of rain, sleet and snow pushing north over the country, meaning a number of weather warnings have been issued.
The agency warned that outbreaks of rain will gradually move up from the southwest on 07 February, turning to sleet and snow in places, especially across the midlands, west and north. The lowest temperatures of -2 to +3 degrees generally, although it will be ‘locally colder’ in parts of Ulster.

Reminder that Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority have appealed to motorists to ‘drive safely and without distraction’ this bank holiday weekend.
