The NEW August issue of Railway Modeller is out today!

It's mid summer, and the August edition of Railway Modeller carries the traditional outdoor garden line as the Railway of the Month – an exquisite O gauge recreation of the much-loved Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, with automated digital control allowing its owner, Simon Kennedy, to sit back and watch the trains go by. Other layouts featured include Rhiw Mk.II, a new version of a BR diesel-era South Wales Valleys branch terminus originally featured in RM in 2012; Richmond, an N gauge recreation of a North Yorkshire branch terminus in just under 4' x 2'; Stodmarsh, an O gauge model of the East Kent Railway set during the Second World War; and a modular OO9 layout of another famous West Country line, the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. The Plan of the Month is Gledholt Junction, part of an extensive OO gauge system recreating the railways in the Huddersfield area in the later BR steam era, while Colwyn Model Railway Club celebrates its 60th anniversary, and Andrew Burnham shows how to install a digital decoder in an OO9 Peco/Kato Large England 0-4-0T+T. New product reviews include a complete train for the new TT:120 scale, in the form of a Class 50 diesel and Mk.IIf coaches from Hornby; the new Class 66 diesel in OO from Accurascale; and the Caprotti valve gear 'Black Five' from Hornby, also in OO.

This new issue features Deadmans Lane, a busy and colourful exhibition layout showcasing the 21st century railway scene around Derby, complete with the depot housing the Network Rail fleet of yellow test trains.

Other layouts featured this month include Laxey Station (part of the Manx Electric Railway in 4mm scale), Gallows Close Goods (recreating a former section of railway in Scarborough in N gauge), and Otterford, a cleverly designed EM gauge layout that can be converted to portray either a real or a fictional location.

We also find out how members of the local community in Axminster came together to build a OO gauge tribute to the fondly remembered Lyme Regis branch line, while the Scale Drawings feature provides diagrams of Richmond station, an imposing Gothic-style building in North Yorkshire.

The NEW May 2024 issue of Railway Modeller is out and in stores NOW!

In this latest issue of Railway Modeller, the Railway of the Month is a OO gauge recreation of Ropley station on the preserved Mid-Hants Railway or 'Watercress Line', faithfully capturing many of the smaller details that can be observed at heritage railways.
Plan of the Month is Carterton, a OO gauge model of a wartime station on the Fairford branch, accurately recreating a real location in a scenic section of just 6' x 2'. Other layouts featured include Invermire in O gauge, based on the Far North and Kyle of Lochalsh lines and set in the 1980s; Barnwood, an extensive N gauge system set in the North West in the late 1980s and early 1990s; Rodmell Green, a OO9 narrow gauge railway serving a cement works; and The Ivy Line, a set of N gauge cameos in box files linked together to make a layout.
Bob Hordern shows how he constructed an impressive viaduct in O gauge, while Callum Willcox adds extra details – a bay window and dormer loft conversion – to the PECO Victorian semi-detached house kit which he built last issue.
New products reviewed this month include the London Midland & Scottish Railway diesels Nos.10000 and 10001 from Graham Farish/Bachmann in N gauge; the first locomotive from Cavalex Models, the BR Class 56 diesel in OO; the Ruston & Hornsby Class 88DS diesel shunter from Hornby in OO; and new BR 12-ton vans, mineral wagons and china clay hoppers from PECO in N.

In the April edition of Railway Modeller, the Railway of the Month is a firm favourite on the exhibition circuit – Grantham, The Streamliner Years, depicting the East Coast Main Line in its 1930s heyday and showing the realistic look that can be achieved using code 100 track and foam ballast underlay.

Other layouts in this issue include Lynnbach, a freelance micro layout in OO9; Exton Quay, a 1930s Southern Railway branch terminus in 00; and Great Deltan, a modern image layout in N gauge based on part of the West Coast Main Line, and even featuring a working go-kart track.

The Plan of the Month is an OO gauge layout depicting Kirkby Stephen East station on the famous trans-Pennine Stainmore Route, while Michael Scott shows how he constructed a 1960s office building largely from card, Jim Smith describes the building of a London & North Western Railway 'Watford Tank' in Gauge 1, and Callum Willcox builds the Victorian house kit recently released by Peco in 4mm scale.

Our March issue is on sale NOW!

The March Railway Modeller is our traditional Scottish-themed issue, in which we preview the Model Rail Scotland exhibition on 23, 24 & 25 February – now the biggest model railway show in the UK with over 50 layouts on display. Three of these are featured in this issue, with the Railway of the Month being Eastfield – a mammoth 70' x 40' O gauge recreation of the Glasgow diesel depot as it was in the 1980s – while the other two are Weedram Distillery in OO gauge, and Kettlewell, a Midland Railway branch terminus in P4.

The Scottish theme continues with the Scale Drawings feature, which profiles the London & North Eastern Railway K4 2-6-0s – a class of six engines designed specifically to work the West Highland line from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig. This route is also the subject of our Plan of the Month, which proposes a OO gauge model of Rannoch station using the laser-cut station building and signal box kits recently released by PECO.

Modelling features include a scratch-built 2mm scale dockside crane by Peter Osborne, and guidance on how to use static grass, from Callum Willcox. Leading the new product reviews is the long-awaited Great Western Railway Steam Rail Motor in OO by Kernow Model Rail Centre, and others include O gauge Deltic diesels and a Network South East Class 73/1 electro-diesel from Heljan, 4mm scale house kits and N gauge 16-ton mineral wagons from PECO, and OO9 Gloucester narrow gauge coaches from Bachmann.
