Things that worked this summer holiday and things that didn’t…

✔️A lot of lovely family time and time with the kids.

✔️Lots of different trips, from the mountains in France to camping in Gloucester. We didn’t have long stretched with the kids bored at home.

✔️A proper 2 week break from LinkedIn - only good stuff came from that break

✔️I carried on working in between trips, and had the space to come up with some great ideas, even though I wasn’t working long hours.

✔️I feel excited to hit September with plans for the rest of the year formulated.

What could have been better…

❌ I didn’t get half the business development stuff done that I was planning.

❌ Hard to get sales calls booked in or to get new clients lined up for September.

❌ I worked from home and barely made it into the office. The upside being that I was around for the kids. The downside also being that I was around for the kids! They want to ask me questions every 2 minutes!

❌Trying to maximise those early morning hours of quiet to be productive (when you’re not a morning person), also trying to squeeze in some fitness too was hard.

❌Probably on my phone too much, but sometimes when you’re trying to do all the things this is how you end up ‘working’. On your phone quickly checking messages etc. Ugh - hate my phone!

I’ve come to accept there is no perfect August, but I felt closer to it this summer than any summer before.

❓Are you looking for quick wins?

I know, we all are.

There’s an immediate pressure which is stopping you from thinking about the long game.

So you’re throwing spaghetti 🍝 at the wall to see what sticks.

You’re absorbing every hack, tip, trick and tactic in that you can get your hands on.

But it means that next month, and the month after you won’t have really moved forward.

It’s scary to take a pause, go back to the basics and rebuild you foundations.

But often that’s the only way you can really move forward and start feeling like you’re getting somewhere.

I’ve had to do this a number of times (because you should never stop questioning, reviewing, rethinking your direction). This is where I start with clients (however established they are):

❗️I always go back to firstly reviewing your objectives
❗️Your key marketing messages - do they still feel right?
❗️Has your target audience changed? If so, then who are they now?
❗️Have you got content pillars in place? Do these still make sense (taking into consideration the changes that may have happened above?)
❗️Do your marketing activities still align with everything above? Or have you got stuck in a few ruts along the way?

Businesses evolve, because people evolve.

What was right for your business last year is not necessarily right for it this year.

3 mistakes people make when creating an income 💰 generating marketing strategy…

❗️They lose sight of their original objectives and get too focussed on the how instead of the why (getting caught up in tactics).

❗️They neglect their target audience and become so absorbed in their business they forget to look at it through an outsiders perspective.

❗️They get stuck in a rut and don’t objectively review what they are doing and what it’s achieving regularly enough.

What’s the solution?

💥 Have a solid strategy in the first place.

💥 Have regular reviews in place.

💥 Get an expert in with a fresh perspective.

💥 Never fear scrapping something if it’s simply not delivering (or finding a way to do it better!).

Why do I work with purpose driven businesses?

I was explaining to someone the other day that one of my first jobs was working in a marketing agency. I was lucky enough to work on accounts such as Greenpeace, Amnesty International, RHS, Macmillan Cancer Relief, and so on...

I also worked on a stationery brand that made sticky labels....

I think the stark contrast hit me from the outset! I just struggled to get excited about the sticky labels... in fact I struggled to get excited about trying to market anything that to me seemed fairly meaningless (although of course sticky labels have their uses!).

Fast forward, and about 4 years ago as a family we decided we needed to make changes to lessen our negative impact on the planet. 🌎 Lots of small changes over time...a work in progress of course!

My business journey felt it needed to reflect this as well, I became a passionate supporter of businesses that were trying to do the same as us.

And here we are!

As a result I get to work with businesses whose values align with mine, and as it turns out, they are all really lovely people too!

How can it be July so soon? 🙈

Summer holidays fast approaching, and it feels like we are all on overdrive trying to max out work before schools break up, AND make the most of the (finally) sunny weather! 

My favourites this month are:

💚 Clean Beaches Week. - we might not manage it in July, but we'll definitely do some beach cleaning in August in Cornwall! 

💚 Don't Step on a Bee Day holds special meaning for me this month as I have started working with the brilliant art activist

💚National Simplicity Day - because I'm all about simplifying social media for my clients!

Content creation gets a lot of airtime. It's important, sure, but if it's all you're obsessing about it then you might be missing a trick...

Engagement strategies are like the secret weapon.

If you can nail both then you'll be laughing!

Are you engaging on a daily basis with:

💚 Large accounts in your space (influencers)
💚 Peers, those attracting the same clients but offering a complementary service
💚 Potential customers
'💚Superfans' - those who always engage with your content

It sounds easy, but it’s time consuming!

Block out some time each day if you can to do as much of this as you can.

Combined with good content you'll soon start to see the difference.

Happy Friday.l! A few new followers have joined me recently, some have come over from my account, welcome!

I thought I’d share a few fun facts for a Friday:

💫 I can’t eat a Kit Kat without nibbling all the chocolate off first.

💫 I grew up in Germany (but I’m British), and when I was 4 years old I was put into a German Kindergarden, I refused to speak for 4 months and then just spoke fluent German one day! (Wish I could learn a language like this now!!)

💫 I’m definitely Vegemite over Marmite (married to an Australian!)

💫 In lockdown I wasted 40 hours of my life watching ‘Married at First Sight Australia’ (series 5)…and my current guilty pleasure is Selling Sunsets, which I hate myself for watching, but can’t seem to stop!

💫 I’m an obsessive jam jar hoarder, it’s a problem…

💫 I once sucked a cockroach up a straw that was in a smoothie 😳

So…hit me with your funniest fact…or just tell me what you’re watching at the moment?

(oh and this is Brandy, our 5th family member, she’s a very old lady now and we all adore her, she looks just like a Dingo!)
