✅ Get that strategy in place to give you that bigger picture view, so you can be very intentional over you summer activity
✅ Know what you want to achieve, get your key dates in the diary for Sept and Oct now
✅ Batch create content - emails and social media posts. Get ahead of the game now!
✅ Prioritise - just pick one or two channels to focus on
✅ Reduce but don’t stop. Agree with yourself/team members, a do-able level of content for the summer and stick to it.
✅ Schedule posts ahead of time
✅ Keep it EASY - repurpose where possible.
By doing this you will avoid:
❌ The inevitable September panic
❌ The scramble to make Oct and Nov count
❌ Losing connection with your audience
❌ Loss of confidence and momentum by September (it’s haaard to come back!)
❌ Looking like your business has shut up shop for the summer (unless that’s exactly how you’d like it to look!)
I think it’s virtually impossible for any business owner to get the balance totally right!

If you’re maintaining visibility, chances are you feel like a bit of a pest now and again! 👀
We are in a crowded space, it’s hard to stand out.
Your audience needs nurturing.
Sometimes it might take a year or more for someone to be in the right space to reach out.
If you’ve just relied on them following you on social media, they may well have drifted off to newer pastures by then!

Running a business by yourself can be lonely…
If I hadn’t had the support of various communities I think I would have given up long ago!
I have learnt that to make this journey enjoyable and sustainable over the longer term I have to build in ways to connect with others in a similar position to me.

➡️ I want to do start doing in person workshops for business founders this year and also arranging non-networky networking events for purpose driven businesses.

Stop trying to do all the things…😬
I can’t tell you how many times I speak to business owners and they are spread across so many channels. None of which are really working well for them.
A key trend we will see in 2024 is less is more.
Be more selective around which channels or platforms your using - and let your audience guide you on what these should be.
You may love Instagram, but if your target market aren’t here then what’s the point?
Choose what’s right for your business, don’t worry about what everyone else is doing.
Stick to your lane, do what’s going to get you the results you need and get rid of the distractions.
Regularly re-assess, what’s working and what’s not?
Adapt accordingly.

Yeah…I know, breaking all the rules here!
Always telling clients to only post reels that are related to their business.
And here I am, posting about our puppy!
But, here’s the thing, the past 6 weeks have been dominated by this little creature.
She’s 100% interfered with my business - puppies are demanding! But I’ve also had a lot of meetings where she’s been sleeping on my lap 🤎. My clients have adored meeting her virtually!
Have I had puppy remorse?? Ummm…absolutely! When clearing up the 10th accident in one day the kitchen. 💩
But, saying that, she’s bringing us so much joy. She’s becoming a part of our family, and one day I’ll bring her to work (when she stopped chewing my laptop charger and 💩 on the floor!!)
So here I am unashamedly sharing this ridiculously cute little thing. Meet Willow. 🤎
I am seriously trying to work out a way she can feature more heavily on here with a social media angle! 🤔 I’m working on it…

If you want to get results from your social media (ie. you are a business here), then you need an engaged community.
Without it, you are just a content creator!
Even the best content creator will not necessarily be able to get their audience to respond and take action when asked to if they haven’t been nurturing those relationships.
So, it’s time to:
❌ stop expecting your content to work wonders for you
❌ stop waiting for that elusive viral post to somehow solve everything for you!
Instead, start:
✅ understanding that your engagement strategy is as important as your content
✅ realising that you are building a community not just accruing followers
I see too many businesses rolling out their content and then sitting back and wondering why there’s always tumbleweed.
I firmly believe that engagement strategies are underrated, and because engagement is hard to pin down, it’s a bit of a mystery to many.
BUT, it is the missing piece of the puzzle for many businesses.

What you think you need and what you actually need are sometimes two different things:
❌ A massive following
✅ an engaged audience of potential buyers for your service or product.
You don’t need a huge audience to make sales.
But, you do need the RIGHT audience.
Do you want a bunch of random people following you, who will never ever buy from you?
When reels go viral, they can often attract an audience that will neither be that engaged with your subsequent content nor will have any intention of buying from you.
What you do need is:
⭐️A solid strategy and a crystal clear idea of who you are targeting.
Building an audience slowly is frustrating but remember it’s quality NOT quantity!

Social media is geared up to make us feel inadequate.
How often do you feel underwhelmed with the response after you post something?
The thing is…how is it possible not to?
❗️If you get 40 likes, you see someone else getting 80.
❗️If you get 100, you see someone else getting 200.
And so on…you get the picture?
BUT, remember, the algorithm pushes out popular posts, so whilst you feel that certain people are ALWAYS getting huge engagement, chances are you aren’t seeing their posts that didn’t do so well.
And I guarantee they will have also had posts that flopped.
So, take it all with a pinch of salt.
💚 Remember likes don’t = sales.
Don’t get distracted by what others are doing, stick to your own plan and be consistent.

It’s a tough truth, but those that do well on social media pour a lot of effort in to make it happen.
There are no:
❌Short cuts
❌Ways to cheat the algorithm
❌Magical formulas that require no work
The reality is way more boring. You have to:
* invest time
* build consistency
* have your targeting worked out
* be clear in your messaging
* probably sacrifice other things along the way
But, the pay off will be:
🔥a real audience of engaged humans
🔥starting conversations
🔥a solid organic base on which you can add paid ads should you want to
🔥a supportive community that responds to your call to actions

I am definitely more introvert than extrovert when it comes to social media.
Maybe some extroverts feel really introverted on social media??! Is that you?
I’m somewhere in the middle I’d say, but on social media I’m very happy not being front and centre.
I’ve had to get over this for my business, which I do find keeps me focussed on the end goal and often overrides any feelings of introversion!
⭐️ scheduling content helps me panic less about posting something
⭐️visualising someone particular that I am haring a post with makes it feel more personal
⭐️I go through phases, currently I’m not making videos, partly because I’m too busy with work and partly because it just feels like an effort. Not beating myself up about it though!
⭐️think about the end game - helps turn it into another business task, and makes it feel less of a big deal
⭐️knowing i have a tribe that will always engage early on my posts helps. But honestly creating regularly takes the pressure off any single post bombing! (and it happens to all of us!)

The new reels editing functionality, pros and cons:
✅ I can see the appeal of having it all in one place
✅ I LOVE that there is more control over timing text and stickers to be more precise (a good reason to have your video split into sections as this makes it easier to time the text the match).
❌ Editing the clips was a little harder. trickier to trim the ends precisely.
❌ Whilst the new guide feature for the text appearing and disappearing is great, it sometimes stops working… a little hit and miss.
But overall I’d say it’s an improvement!

I launched my business in May. Helping purpose driven businesses be more strategic about how they use their social media. It’s certainly been a ride, almost daily pushing myself out of my comfort zone!

This is going to be useful if you are a brand selling a certain type of product to a group of people who can be identified with a particular interest or hobby - ie. fashion styles and trends, dogs, car culture etc.
It’s definitely going to be worth using, as there are reports of a new explore page layout being tested which is grouping the content by interest.
These won’t replace hashtags…yet anyway! So keep using those too, these topics are very broad and you are limited to using only 3 of them.
