The amount of time you can waste in trouble shooting cameras and other kit on set, when you haven’t got a little monitor to check if there’s signal coming through, is ridiculous. If you spend a lot of time plugging in cameras or checking white balances and such, get yourself an SDI monitor… it’ll save you time and a headache. Furthermore, some of these monitors can do cross conversion and can serve as loop through monitors for your production.

At a recent event, we used an ATOMOS Flame to give the director a view of what was on the in-vision TV at all times. Now we can't simply live without it!

This is an old saying, and very well-known… but one of the most common issues we see with presentation slides is overcrowding. The more information you cram into one slide, the more difficult it becomes for the audience to get anything useful from it.

Try to ask yourself these questions:
-Can you spread the information over more than one slide?
-Can different elements on the slide appear in turn as you discuss the salient points?
-Could references and other supplementary information appear elsewhere in your deck?

Sometimes...less is more!

Ever since the first camcorders started to appear in the 1980s there has been a growing DIY trend in the video creation industry. The first mobile phone capable of video capture was launched in 1999 and YouTube was launched in 2005 with TikTok arriving in 2016. All of this has meant that today we are facing an absolute flood of homemade video content.

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy professional video production company, some of this content is very good and the things that can be achieved, by some, are incredible. But for companies looking to stand out or make a statement, we would argue that it is no longer enough to simply have a video on your website, or produce some content. In a world where volume is everywhere, professionalism and quality become king.

DIY content isn’t going anywhere, but as people begin to realise the device alone doesn’t make you a Hollywood Director (despite what the device manufacturers tell you), there will be a push back against homemade and towards quality that stands out.

We spend a lot of time moving between different studios here at 7 Stream Media, meaning we do a lot of setups and tear down and it is important to streamline the kit as much as possible. One of the things that we really couldn’t live without is… Stream Deck.

If you’re working in live video production and you haven’t got yourself a Stream Deck, you are seriously missing out on a world of joy. These things, coupled with the right software, have some Harry Potter levels of wizardry ability. Being able to simultaneously control your video, audio, and sometimes even lights is simply fantastic when running and/or troubleshooting a live production system. Being relatively inexpensive compared to most vision mixing panels, and also much smaller, this wonderful bit of kit is a must when working on any live event!

A temp track (temporary track) is a track that contains music that you know you like for the scene but might not be able to use in the video due to restrictions on copyright. This gives a composer or audio editor a really clear idea of the style of music you’re looking for and helps them either compose or find music to replace the temp track with at a later date.

You might need to rethink your expectations if you want a Taylor Swift track but don’t want to pay for the rights, but temp tracks can be a good place to start putting music into your scene to reflect the mood.

to another filming location abroad!

Stockholm is built on 14 islands which are connected by 57 bridges. It’s famed for its iconic City Hall, has the first open-air museum, and if you love Abba, you can visit the Abba museum. It is also the home of furniture chain Ikea.

Our home for filming for the week was Stockholm’s Mässan Congress Centre which welcomes over 1.2 million visitors each year, the water features outside are mesmerizing, I could have watched them for hours. One thing I noticed about Stockholm was its apparent lack of Swedish people, it was a cultural melting pot from across Europe. We did meet a Swedish barmaid though!

There hasn’t been a huge number of well-known films shot in Stockholm, but here are a few; The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest and F***y Hill (nothing to do with the barmaid… I promise).

Fun Fact: During the second half of June, it barely ever gets dark due to being far enough North to catch the midnight sun.

Messe München was our filming destination in Munich, with 55,000 m² of exhibition space and a further 7,000 m² of space available in the Congress Centre.

Munich is culture-rich and full of beer gardens (over 60) and pubs with microbreweries; it also hosts Oktoberfest, which actually starts in September. Munich has an English Garden at its centre, which has beer tents, restaurants and a nudist area… brrrrr. It has the oldest cinema in the world, which has existed since 1906 and has been open ever since. Munich is also home to the BMW World headquarters.

📽There have been some classic films either partially or fully shot in Munich, such as; Night of the Zombies, Rollerball, W***y Wonka and the Chocolate Factory or everyone’s favourite… Vier Gegan die Bank (apparently it is a film).

🍺Fun Fact: Have we mentioned beer yet? Beer is actually considered food in Bavaria, we must go now, dinner is ready.

Anyone who saw the BBC’s coverage of the 2021 Olympic Games will no doubt have seen and marveled at the elaborate and expansive set. Here in the 7 Stream Media office, our favourite game was to try to work out what parts of the set were real, and what parts weren’t – until the behind-the-scenes photos emerged of course…

Chroma-key is nothing new of course, having first been used in the 1940s, but the ability to place subjects in a completely virtual environment that you and they can move around in real-time and broadcast this live is more recent.

While the budget they had to throw at the event was more than most of the productions we get involved in, the cost of this technology continues to fall. In a world where travel is increasingly difficult (and expensive), we think we will see more and more of this type of thing.
