04/04/2022

In an industry leading move, LED lighting & electronics manufacturer Oxley Group is moving to a four-day working week in a bid to improve work life balance for employees, drive business productivity and reduce its carbon footprint.

The move, which will cover the whole operation at their head office site in Ulverston, Cumbria, will be implemented from today on a 12-month trial basis and has been regarded as highly progressive by industry colleagues and customers. The team will continue to operate a 37 hour week which will be worked on a flexible basis over four long days.

The new working arrangement has overwhelming support from the Oxley team and the Group anticipates that it will deliver multiple benefits. The most notable of these is a better work-life balance, which will support the health and wellbeing of the team. In the current climate of skills shortages it is hoped that this will aid both support the retention of current skills and future recruitment.

There is much evidence that a four day week model delivers higher productivity and performance, research into existing four day week implementation programmes shows that a shorter working week increases an organisation’s productivity, in addition some Oxley production cycles are better suited to a longer day model, which will enhance Oxley’s excellent customer delivery.

As part of the business’ commitment to Sustainability, a four day working week will reduce site energy usage and have a significant impact on carbon footprint by removing the need for 20% of travel to work journeys. Additionally, as a signatory to the Women in Defence and the Women in Aviation & Aerospace Charter, gender equality is very important to Oxley and there is strong industry evidence to suggest that this move will deliver improved gender balance.

The response from the Oxley team has been very positive. It is hoped that there will also be a community benefit to the new arrangement as all Oxley colleagues will have more leisure time to spend locally, supporting other Cumbrian businesses.
Manufacturing Supervisor, Liam Williams commented: “Being at home on a Friday, I’m able to spend more time with my daughter, reducing the time she spends in childcare and therefore reducing the cost of childcare. This allows me to spend more time with my family and to have a better work-life balance which is very important to me. The change has been a massive boost for morale, to know that the company is listening to your ideas and taking action.”

Production Manager, Helen Cooper added: “It’s not just a four day week. Under the flexible working arrangements I can make my schedule work for me. This is beneficial to a lot of people and especially those with a family and it makes Oxley a more attractive place to work.”

Mechanical Design Engineer, Aaron Fox is looking forward to less driving time: “I commute 50 miles a day, one less travel day will save me £500 a year and it will give me personal time at the weekend. Oxley is giving us a lot of trust, and this makes it a more pleasurable place to work.”

Operations Manager, Keith Denison is clear on how he will be spending his Fridays: “We’re based so close to the Lake District, I’m looking forward to working a four day week and getting some more cycling in over a three day weekend.”

Oxley Group CEO Darren Cavan commented: “Our team is at the heart of the business. After the pandemic we had to look at how the future of work would look. We undertook a survey entitled ‘Challenge and Change’ to understand the priorities of our colleagues. There was overwhelming support for a four day week. We listened and we’re delighted that we have been able to move forward and implement this so quickly, alongside flexible and hybrid working solutions.

“The flexible and hybrid changes enable our team to develop a work pattern that fits for them personally and that is suited to their role, for example they may wish to work from home when focus and concentration is needed or to work onsite when collaboration is required. Feedback from many employees was that connections were also very important to them so all of our team will still have a desk and Oxley will continue to support the activities and social interaction on site that our team enjoys so much.

“We believe this change will offer a ‘Win, Win, Win’ to our team, the business and of course our customers across the globe who expect an excellent level of service from Oxley.”

Two local STEM events have joined forces to put on a showcase of activities in a new two-day experience to be held at Furness College in Barrow-in-Furness.

The Furness STEM Show is a new two-day event for schools that will be held during term time on the 24th and 25th of May. Organised by Furness Education & Skills Partnership (FESP) and sponsored by BAE Systems and the Royal Academy of Engineering, it delivers a host of activities for primary age children to discover and be inspired by STEM subjects and activities.

UlverSTEM was Ulverston’s first STEM educational event for families with children 6-16 years of age. Organised by a group of local volunteers who previously hosted two successful events at the Coronation Hall, UlverSTEM presents an opportunity for young people and their families to discover and be excited about the prospect and opportunities that STEM subjects can offer in terms of education and a career.

Dr Michael Jeschke, UlverSTEM Planning Team member and Chairman comments: “Covid has restricted our ability to host an event the last few years, however, teaming up with the Furness Stem Show, has enabled us to maximise the opportunity to get in front of both schools and families. We had such an overwhelming response to previous two events, we hope this still gives us an opportunity to continue with the success of the show by partnering this year.

UlverSTEM will be free for families to access between 4.30 and 7pm at Furness College on the 24th May.

The planning team for the combined event expects over 30 organisations to take part including BAE, Oxley, Bender, GSK, Siemens Energy, and many other exciting technology companies. There will be plenty of opportunities to engage, have fun and try your hand with exciting technologies.

27/08/2021

A major programme of maintenance works on Cumbria’s longest road bridge has been completed, securing its future for many years to come.
Cumbria County Council has invested approximately £5m in the significant maintenance and refurbishment project on Jubilee Bridge in Barrow.
The works have included re-waterproofing the bridge deck, carrying out more than 1,000 repairs to steelwork and repainting the steel structure. The original bridge plaque from 1935, when the bridge was renamed to Jubilee Bridge from its initial name of Walney Bridge (erected in 1908), has been restored too and will be placed on the refurbished bridge.
The three-year programme of works was carried out by the Council’s main contractor, Story Contracting, and the 350-metres long bridge remained open to traffic and pedestrians throughout this period. Up to 24,000 vehicles a day use the bridge which provides the only mainland crossing from Barrow to Walney Island.
Extensive repairs were needed because the old waterproofing of the bridge deck was failing and as a result water was seeping through the concrete deck and corroding the steel superstructure.
Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:
“I’m delighted this very important project to repair and refurbish one of Cumbria’s key road bridges has been completed. The County Council has invested approximately £5m in this scheme to ensure the bridge is fit for purpose and these works will secure its future for many years to come. Thanks go to our contractor, Story Contracting, for doing an excellent job, and I’d also like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience and understanding while these works have taken place.”
Cllr Kevin Hamilton, Chair of Cumbria County Council’s Barrow Local Committee, said:
“I warmly welcome the completion of maintenance works on Jubilee Bridge. This has been a major project which has resulted in some disruption for road users but we had no option but to repair the fabric of the bridge and I’m grateful the County Council has invested millions of pounds in the works. We now have a bridge which is as good as new and will continue providing a vital link between Barrow and Walney Island for many more years. Thanks go to Story's for fulfilling the works that so badly needed doing and also thanks to the residents of Walney for the patience they have shown while the work was being done.”
Alan Boyle, Operations Director for Story Contracting’s Construction division added:
“We feel proud to have supported our key client Cumbria County Council over the last few years on the essential Jubilee Bridge programme. The completed maintenance works here in Barrow will secure the structure for traffic and pedestrians for years to come and we thank them for their patience while we delivered the project.”
Ray Langley, Divisional Director of Mott MacDonald said:
“Mott MacDonald is delighted to have managed this challenging project on behalf of Cumbria County Council, particularly the social outcome of maintaining access for the residents of Walney Island for the foreseeable future. The bridge is the UK’s oldest working Scherzer bascule bridge, a brilliant piece of Edwardian engineering. As bridge engineering consultants, we take great pride in extending the life of existing assets for future generations.”

Students at Barrow Sixth Form College are celebrating an excellent set of results in a historic year for education.

The sixthformers returned to the Rating Lane campus for results day to discover their grades and plan exciting futures at university, in higher apprenticeships and in employment.

There were around 200 students marking their achievements in A Levels and CTECs with joyful hugs and high fives to their friends - after two years of disrupted study due to the pandemic.

The college saw a bumper crop of high grades with top students Chloe Price, Rona Bisset, Izzy Rodger, Jacob Sharif, Kris McSweeney and Isobel Dixon all securing the maximum 3 A* grades.

Aspiring medics Chloe Price, who joined college from Dowdales, and ex-Chetwynde student Aimee Barker secured their university places to study medicine. Former St Bernard’s student Darcie Wallace achieved As in all her subjects and is going to study dentistry. They all studied A Levels in biology, maths and chemistry.

“I was awake at 5.30am and trying to stay calm,” said Darcie. “I needed 3 As to study dentistry at the University of Sheffield and I found out this morning that I’d been accepted. I got my head down and worked hard for my final assessments but I’m still surprised by my grades.”

Rona Bisset’s top grades in art and design, maths and physics take her a step closer to her dream career in architecture with a place at the University of Edinburgh.

“I’m ecstatic with my results,” said Rona. “I think I adapted well to the lockdown situation and my tutors were amazing, I’d like to thank them.,” she said.

Meanwhile, fellow art and design student Adam Smith, who joined from Furness Academy, studied four A Levels securing ABBB and will study biology at Newcastle University.

“I want a career as a research scientist, I wasn’t expecting to get such good results. I definitely think I’ve gained new skills in lockdown that I wouldn’t have in college and I’d like to thank everyone who helped me along the way,” he said.

Paige Edwards, another ex-Furness Academy pupil, achieved an A* in maths and 3As is also planning to study a science subject with a degree in paramedic science at Coventry University.

“I wanted something that was an alternative to nursing and a bit more independent,” she said. “I’ve made great friends at college and we’ll be celebrating tonight. My family are dead proud of me.”

Jacob Sharif will do a degree in law at the University of Manchester while fellow ex-Walney pupil Izzy Rodger’s 3A*s and an A* in his extended project mean he is heading to Durham University to study physics.

“My aim is to become a commercial solicitor,” said Jacob. “I was nervous but having seen my results, they are great and I’m relieved. It’s not only the students that had to learn to adapt from home but the tutors too and I’d like to give them a special thanks for their support.”

Izzy said it had been an anxious wait. “I knew I needed an A in physics and I was prepared to fail and bawl my eyes out, so I’m so happy that I’ve done well. This year has been unprecedented and it’s been tough at times, but the teachers adapted well and so did the students. I’m excited for uni and ready to tackle it now. I’m going to celebrate with my family. They’ve been more anxious than I have!”

Hannah Brabbs, who went to Millom School, will read English Literature at Manchester University after achieving As in all her subjects while Charlotte Dixon, who joined from Furness Academy, was celebrating after securing 3As in biology, law and psychology and a B in photography.

She said: “I’ve had my offer confirmed to study law at Durham University so I’m feeling really excited. I was really nervous this morning, but thankfully I pulled through. My family and friends are really pleased for me, especially my sister Hannah as she’s at the same uni.”

Connor McLoughlin and Bobby-Rose Bone are looking forward to higher apprenticeship roles at BAE Systems in engineering and quality project management respectively.

“I always aimed for a higher apprenticeship because it’s close to home and you get paid while you work,” said Connor. “I did have an offer to do a degree in mechanical engineering but when I got the offer from BAE that’s what I wanted.

“I’m really happy. There were many distractions working from home but I feel I got through it and I’ve got the grades I needed,” added Bobby-Rose.

Head of Sixth Form Helen Gibson praised everyone across the college for the way they had stepped up in a challenging year.

“We are so proud of what our students have achieved after what amounts to two years of disruption to their education due to the pandemic.

“They have been an absolute pleasure to work with, they have responded positively to everything that has been thrown at them and turned challenges in learning into opportunities.

“We are sure that the problem-solving skills they have honed and resilience they have shown will stand them in good stead for their futures. It is also testament to the commitment and dedication of our amazing staff that our students have achieved their goals.”

Assistant Head of Sixth Form Helen Rastelli, who runs the Honours programme for academic high flyers at sixth form, said it was wonderful to end the academic year on such a positive note.

“To see the students faces today as they receive their grades and look forward to bright futures is what teaching is all about.”

Congratulations to everyone receiving their A level results today. You’ve worked really hard in very trying circumstances 👏

IMPORTANT NEWS: Cumbrians aged 12-30 asked to get tested as Delta variant cases rise

Cumbria County Council and NHS Test and Trace are asking every person living and working in Cumbria between the ages of 12 and 30 to get a PCR test for COVID-19, even if they do not have symptoms.

This is because new COVID-19 infections are rising fastest among this age group. By getting as many people as possible tested, those who are infectious can be identified and asked to self-isolate to help stop infection spreading.

Tests will be conducted using PCR test kits, not the rapid result Lateral Flow Device tests that are used for regular weekly testing.

People not at school can attend any of Cumbria’s testing sites between 8am and 8pm from 19 June 2021. You do not need to book your test, simply walk-in and you will be tested.

Parents/carers of school age children will be informed of testing arrangements by their child’s school.

If you cannot attend a test site you can get a test kit delivered to your home via https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test. Choose the “I have been advised to get a test by local Public Health officials” option.
