The world is indeed in a weird place. Sometimes it seems people are gripped by a collective madness, disconnected from reality. Trump, brexit for starters. The good ole USA has its fair share of madness, but now it has gender reveal parties. Just when you thought things can't get weirder: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-56159731?fbclid=IwAR3sIRvAqd507ihoSgkTe8VH5KZfwRULEXjKn8U37qY6w5blEh4CkEdWMbw

Christopher Pekny was making a device to be used at his child's gender-reveal party, police say.

Happiness often comes from within. Learn how to tame negative thoughts and approach every day with optimism.

Science is just beginning to provide evidence that the benefits of this ancient practice are real. Studies have found, for example, that breathing practices can help reduce symptoms associated with anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and attention deficit disorder. For centuries yogis have used breath control, or pranayama, to promote concentration and improve vitality. Buddha advocated breath-meditation as a way to reach enlightenment.

Some research suggests that writing in a personal journal for 15 minutes a day can lead to a boost in overall happiness and well-being, in part because it allows us to express our emotions, be mindful of our circumstances and resolve inner conflicts. Or you can take the next step and focus on one particular challenge you face, and write and rewrite that story.

We all have a personal narrative that shapes our view of the world and ourselves. But sometimes our inner voice doesn’t get it right. By writing and then editing our own stories, we can change our perceptions of ourselves and identify obstacles that stand in the way of our personal well-being.

Write a brief story about what's bugging you; money problems. Having a hard time making friends in a new city. Never going to find love.
Now write a new story from the viewpoint of a neutral observer, or with the kind of encouragement you’d give a friend.

Numerous studies show that writing and rewriting your story can move you out of your negative mindset and into a more positive view of life. “The idea here is getting people to come to terms with who they are, where they want to go,” said James Pennebaker, a psychology professor at the University of Texas who has pioneered much of the research on expressive writing. “I think of expressive writing as a life course correction.”

Happy Daze Lifestyle Partnership happily continues its research into happiness wherever it can be found. We were therefore very happy indeed to learn of a new book happily titled: “The Happy Brain: The Science of Where Happiness Comes From, and Why” (Paperback) by Dean Burnett; Publisher: Guardian Faber Publishing ISBN: 9781783351299 At first we thought it was “The Happy Brian” but no, it is about the brain.
It is the second book by the brainy author Dean Burnett or Doctor Burnett, as he is properly titled. Apart from being happy, he is a neuroscientist, author, blogger, media pundit and comedian as well as a tutor and lecturer at Cardiff University. He writes a satirical science column in the Guardian. His first book was “The Idiot Brain” and, heaven knows, there are enough of them around. He grew up in Pontycymer, a mining village in the South Wales Garw valley, which would make anyone happy. He now lives in Cardiff which would make anyone even happier.
Where do we find happiness, why do we want to be happy? Should we be happy, do we need to be happy? Where does the Brain feature in all this? Or Brian? Dean Burnett explores all these questions and many more from his neuroscientist’s perspective. The book is stuffed with current research, theories about the workings of the brain and the views of experts, psychology professors, comedy writers, celebrities, millionaire gurus and all sorts.
The book is out in digital form on May Day and the paperback is out on 3rd May. If you want to see him in the flesh, you can book ‘An Evening with Dean Burnett’ at Waterstones in various places at various dates. There’s one in his home town Cardiff Waterstones on Wednesday 16th May 19:00 - 20:30: https://www.waterstones.com/events/an-evening-with-dean-burnett/cardiff

Events at Waterstones get you closer to the books and authors you admire most. Find information and tickets about An Evening with Dean Burnett today.

Happy Daze Lifestyles Partnership is dedicated to the pursuit of happiness and what makes us happy. This week the White House Doctor, Rear Admiral Dr. Ronny Jackson reported that 71 year old US President Trump is in 'excellent' health and mentally fit for office. That made us very happy and should make Mr. Trump happy, as well as Dr. Jonny, because we now know he is physically and mentally fit for the challenges of the nation’s highest office. Rear Admiral Dr. Donny said the president is “very sharp” and “very intact.” That makes us even happier. Dr. Donny administered a ‘Montreal Cognitive Assessment’ of cognitive disorders which asks people to identify animals, draw shapes and recall certain words. Dr. Dachsund said that Trump’s “overall health is excellent” although he is one pound away from being obese, does not have a set exercise routine and his cholesterol is too high, even though he uses drugs to lower it. The president also takes other medications, including a low dose of Aspirin for heart health, a cream for rosacea, a multivitamin and a prescription medicine for hair loss. Dr. Jonny said “He has incredibly good genes, and it’s just the way God made him.”

Here at Happy Daze Lifestyles Partnership, we are dedicated to the pursuit of happiness, continually striving to locate the true root of happiness, and what makes us happy. But what is ‘happy’? A feeling of, or showing, pleasure or contentment: as in ‘Melissa came in looking happy and excited’.
We can go back to the word itself: ‘happy’, from ‘hap’, like crappy from crap or muggy from mug.
The linguistic etymologists say it’s from Middle English ‘hap’ (chance, luck, fortune) + y. From Middle English hap, happe (chance, hap, luck, fortune), Old English ġehæp (fit, convenient), from Old Norse happ (hap, chance, good luck) and heppin (happy); Old Danish hap (fortunate), Proto-Germanic hampą (convenience, happiness), Proto-Indo-European kob- (good fortune, prophecy; to fit in, work, succeed) and cognate with Icelandic happ (hap, chance, good luck).
So there it is: nothing like a bit of hap.
