What is the true cost of the Olympics for bidders, host nations and athletes?
As a French speaker I do read and watch the news in French from Brussels. I noticed that the Olympics had become a controversial topic in Paris. French media pessimistic about the Paris Olympics French people were laughing at the idea that the 2024 Olympics would be a success for a few reasons. Rubbish collectors and airport workers were threatening to go on strike during the Olympics and the tickets for the metro were going to double in price. The cleanliness of the Seine river was also contributing to the lack of optimism for the success of the Paris Olympics. […] | Charlotte Mbali

📢 BREAKING :
We're thrilled to see a significant policy change announced today, which will mean that some Afghan families torn apart during the fall of Kabul can now be reunited in safety in the UK!
New changes to the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) will mean that some Afghans resettled in the UK under Pathway 1 CAN NOW BE JOINED by their closest family members, including their children and spouses. Afghan children evacuated to the UK can now be joined by their parents or siblings.
Over the last three years, we've worked with many families torn apart in the chaos of evacuating Kabul. It is fantastic that they will finally have a way to be safely together again thanks to the swift action taken by the new Government. For children apart from their parents, this will be life-changing.
Immigration and Citizenship Minister Seema Malhotra said, “It’s our moral duty to ensure that families who were tragically separated are reunited. Afghans did right by us, and we will do right by them.”
Thank you to all the supporters of the Families Together coalition who have helped raise our voices and support the people we work with. Together, we can continue to make a positive impact.
📢 JUST IN: The government has announced a new pathway for some Afghan families torn apart to finally reunite.
After the fall of Kabul, the chaos of the evacuations left so many families torn apart, including at least 80 children. Until today and despite repeated promises from officials, these families had no way to reunite. Many had been living in hiding and fear from the Taliban.
This win comes after years of hard work, and it means safety and reunion for some families. But, this is only a step in a bigger fight- there are many more people in danger in Afghanistan who still need our help. If you’ve missed all of yesterday’s discussion about migration, here’s a brilliant recap by Ed Conway. Migration is due to Brexit, and we desperately need it.
"Ministers not listening to SAGE's advice... Eat Out To Help Out is an obvious example where it wasn't even run by the scientists" "We gave up in January-February and said we'll never be able to test, contact trace, get people to stay home. None of those things were true" "Some of the countries that went all in with testing, contact tracing and asking people to change their behaviour early, had a much smaller first wave and avoided the second wave until there was a vaccine" "I just wish we had could done that. And we would have saved tens of thousands of lives if we had" Comments by Prof. Christina Pagel #CovidInquiry coverage
Lewis Goodall: "You could have been at a UKIP or Brexit party conference. The way in which in policy terms, and in the way that the Conservative party talks about politics. The move to the Farage agenda, and guess what he's [at the Conservative conference] by the way... has been extraordinary and had been the big story of the long 13 years of Conservative government"

Water companies are drawing up plans to increase bills by up to 40% to pay for the cost of tackling the sewage crisis. According to The Times, rises are expected to be announced next year and could mean annual bills increase from an average of around £450, up to £680.
"This is how parliament deals with lies... For a long time, Boris Johnson got away with it, flouted conventions, flouted rules throughout his career... On this occasion, Johnson outraged the public." - Dominic Grieve
"All of this is about lying in the most senior of public offices. You can't escape on the consequences of that on Brexit. We left the EU on the basis of lies of which Boris Johnson was the principle architect." - Michael Heseltine
"What many forget is that the EU offered the UK an unconditional 12 month extension to the transition period so we could cope with covid without the distraction of Brexit. Brexit was the Tories priority, so the offer was turned down. Much of the mess can be put down to this." - Chris Smith 🔥Counsel for Covid Inquiry: "The Pandemic hit the UK just as it was leaving the EU [which] required an enormous amount of planning, particularly a no-deal exit. It is clear that [this] crowded out and prevented some, or perhaps a majority, of improvements to preparedness." ~AA https://twitter.com/ledredman/status/1668585332089016320
Chris Patten, "I was the Chair of the Conservative party when there was one... I don't find I have very much in common with, for example, some of the flat earthers on the right of the Conservative party." #BBCQT
This is what BBCNews should be - a pithy, factual public education service on current affairs. Much more valuable than simple news broadcasts followed by divisive “debate” & interview which regularly involves giving a mouthpiece to factually wrong propaganda lines.
This is what Brexit has done to British citizens seeking to travel through Dover and Eurostar. And it’s also why we’re no longer seeing school groups from Europe in Canterbury cathedral. Brexit just makes travel miserable.
Natalie Elphicke, the Conservative MP for Dover & Deal, has called the 650 new jobs in Kent a Brexit dividend while ignoring that they were only hired because shipping companies had to deal with all the red tape required by Brexit at Dover port. The delays caused by Brexit are the direct reason for the queues she was complaining about in parliament. Newsnight 16 Feb 2022
Concern is growing about the lack of moral leadership by the Prime Minister. Kent Bylines has been collecting the memes that have been circulating on social media. This poem now set to music is about the lies of Boris Johnson and sleaze evident in current Conservative party M.Ps
