The weather for much of the UK this week has taken a icy turn - winter is settling in for the season, but the promise of #spring is not far away. This is the ideal time of year for gardeners to begin their spring plans. What better accompaniment to those first crisp spring days than the enchanting #scent of perfumed blooms? This is the charm of a richly #fragranced #shrub like Daphne.
#Daphne are hardy, semi-evergreen shrubs in the family Thymelaeaceae. They are compact, slow growing and low maintenance. They are a popular choice for #gardeners, largely for their delicate and intensely #fragrant star-shaped #blooms. Daphne have a superb long #flowering season. In spring they flower on last year’s growth, then continue to bloom on new growth throughout #summer until #autumn. Plant Daphne near doorways, paths, seating areas and fronts of beds where it’s easy to enjoy their sweet #fragrance.
Did you know that the name ‘Daphne’ is derived from Greek Mythology? The story goes that Daphne was a nymph, who transformed herself into a #Laurel tree to escape the attentions of Apollo. Daphne is the #Greek word for Laurel. The full #Latin plant name for Daphne is #Daphnoides - ‘oides’ meaning similar to, in reference to the spear-like shape of their foliage - similar to that of a Laurel.

Did you know there are over 2,000 species of #Euphorbia? This incredibly diverse genus even includes our Christmas favourite, Poinsettia.
Euphorbias are renowned for their fresh and brightly coloured foliage, but they also produce vibrant and long lasting blooms in spring and summer. Their small flowers are called ‘Cyathia’, and are surrounded by colourful bracts, which give these inconspicuous flowers a boost of drama.
Yellow, lime green, gold, deep reds, orange... there are so many different complimentary shades of variegated foliage in the Euphorbia family, there is something to fit any planting scheme.
The right variety of Euphorbia will look sizzling in Mediterranean borders, exotic in tropical planting schemes, and quintessential in a perennial country-cottage garden.

These little figgies are on the market. And we have lots of other plants looking great at the moment.... 🍂 There's definitely an autumnal feel to this week's collection.
Focusing on #Fig #BrownTurkey... this is a self-pollinating variety known for its large, sweet, and juicy fruits and for being the most reliable cropper for the UK. Figs are one of the oldest cultivated fruits, dating back thousands of years. They were prized in ancient civilizations for their nutritional value and cultural significance. Figs are even mentioned in the Bible, their leaves being used as makeshift clothing!
Brown Turkey figs favour warmer weather, plenty of sunlight and so are tolerant of drought, once established. Well-drained, fertile soil is ideal for planting. Figs should be planted in spring or autumn, with trees spaced 10-15 feet apart to allow for adequate growth. Regular watering is necessary during dry periods, especially in the first year after planting. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged wood and shape the tree.
Figs are ripe when they 'give' slightly to gentle pressure. They can be enjoyed fresh, dried, or used in various culinary applications, such as jams and savoury dishes.
