What’s your thoughts on this? 77 weeks of mayhem on the roads through Arbroath.

Today (3 April) Council Leader Cllr Beth Whiteside met with representatives of Sustrans and Balfour Beatty as construction got under way on a new accessible walking, wheeling and cycling route through Angus.

Arbroath A Place for Everyone, will be a once-in-a-lifetime, transformational project for Arbroath and a catalyst for the development of further projects to support the regeneration of the town.

The project will connect destinations throughout Arbroath and will improve accessibility in the town by restoring those areas and facilities disconnected by the current dual carriageway, creating a seafront people will increasingly want to visit and use.

The project also aims help to improve the local economy through increased footfall to shopping areas and attractions for locals and visitors.

Financial support for this bold and transformational project in Arbroath was awarded in 2019 through Sustrans’ Places for Everyone programme, an active travel infrastructure fund backed by Transport Scotland. The Arbroath project is amongst the most ambitious projects being funded by the Places for Everyone programme, with Arbroath the first of Scotland’s towns to receive the highest level of funding available through the scheme.

Cllr Whiteside was joined by Active Travel Spokesperson Cllr Serena Cowdy, Portfolio Director for Sustrans Carole Patrick, Grant Manager for Places For Everyone for Sustrans Craig Cameron, Contracts Manager for Balfour Beatty Keith McDonald and Project Manager for Balfour Beatty Tom Truesdale.

Cllr Cowdy said, “Today’s milestone marks several years of consultation, planning and effort to create and see come to fruition, an ambitious project that will make Arbroath a more desirable place to live in, work in and to visit.

“Improving our towns and communities, making them a greener and more accessible place to live and encouraging a low carbon lifestyle is a vital part of the longer-term future for the whole of Angus.”

Carole Patrick, Portfolio Director for Sustrans said, “We’re overjoyed to see construction starting on this fantastic project.

“By delivering new cycle lanes, tree and wildflower planting, as well as paved seating areas in the town, people living and working in Arbroath will be able to walk, wheel and cycle safely, whilst also enjoying a more relaxed and attractive environment.”

A priority is for the new development to be accessible to all and to improve connectivity by creating safe and attractive pedestrian and cycle routes linking key destinations such as the bus and train stations with the town centre.

Keep up to date with the project by visiting - www.angus.gov.uk/apfe which also has information such as construction designs, consultation report and planned traffic management.

Construction is scheduled for completion in early Autumn 2025.

Police are appealing for information following an attack on Dundee’s South Road on Monday.

The 30-year-old man was assaulted with an object at around 3.45pm while walking alone on South Road, near Charleston.

He was struck on the head and fell to the ground.

The man was treated in Ninewells Hospital for a facial injury and has since been discharged.

Sergeant Nicola Lobb of Police Scotland said: “The injured man saw a group of youths run off towards Menzieshill just as this happened.

They were described as all white and wearing medical face masks.

“Officers are making local enquiries but would appeal to anyone who was in the area to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact at Lochee Police Station by calling 101, quoting incident 2101 of Monday February 7.

10/02/2022

Students and teachers in Scotland’s secondary schools will no longer need to wear face masks in the classroom from the end of this month, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced.

She said the change – from February 28 when all schools have returned from the half-term break – is a “further step in allowing children and young people a return to a more normal experience in school after many, many months of sacrifice”.

Face coverings will still be required in other communal, indoor areas within high schools, the First Minister added, but this will be kept under “regular review”.

The announcement came 24 hours after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the last domestic restrictions in England – including the legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive – are likely to be lifted later this month, “a full month early”.

Ms Sturgeon said the requirement for face coverings in classrooms is being relaxed following the latest advice from an expert group, who considered the matter on Tuesday.

Ms Sturgeon, who announced the change at the start of First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood, said the move will “reduce barriers to communication in the classroom and reduce any wellbeing impacts which arise from the use of face coverings”.

It is made possible by “reducing case rates” for coronavirus in secondary school-aged children, she said, as well as the decrease in hospital admission rates among all ages.

This “encouraging situation” also means restrictions on school assemblies can be lifted, along with those on transition visits for youngsters either starting primary or secondary school, the First Minister added.

While the guidance will be updated next week, Ms Sturgeon said she had wanted to confirm the change as soon as possible “to give children and young people, their families and school staff certainty about the forthcoming changes before the February break”.
