Tim Perkins
Tim has a wealth of experience working for the likes of Marvel, DC and 2000AD. Chances are, if you have held a good old comic, you may well be holding his artwork. He has worked on Comics in the thousands during a 40+ year-long career as a Comics Creator for many Comicbo
ok and Book Publishers from around the world. OUR LITTLE STORY
A word from Tim Perkins, creator of The Educators. I thought I would add a personal note as someone that has been creating comic books of all genres for more than forty years, for publishers all around the world as diverse as Marvel, DC, Disney and more – having seen their successes with children of all ages when used in the classroom. I am biased, of course I am, but I have seen comics successfully introduce the many schools, teachers and students of all ages to the wonders inside their pages whilst bringing understanding in their uses with curriculum-based subject matter. It is a very privileged position that I find myself in when I am invited along to schools to deliver workshops and talks and see classes, especially those containing classes or individual pupils that perhaps have learning difficulties or are reluctant learners and witness their joy at using them to learn. It was with this in mind that I decided to include cited essays and papers regarding comics and their uses in the classroom written by educators and academics for further reading for teachers to back up my words on the subject. All I and a lot of my fellow comic creators around the world have asked is for comics to have been given a chance to be used as a teaching aid, not a replacement for good teaching practise. Thankfully nowadays many educators and academics are seeing that potential for their uses in the classroom environment. I hope you and your children get the same joy and excitement at learning through comics as the many that have gone before having done so. Imagine introducing your classes to the wonders inside their pages that will go onto to lead them to read the pages of books as diverse as Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stephenson, and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame – alongside The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien and The Meaning of Relativity by Albert Einstein, as their education progresses. THE POWER OF COMICS FOR LEARNING
VISUAL ENGAGEMENT
Comics provide a visually stimulating learning experience, capturing students’ attention and making educational content more accessible and engaging. IMPROVED COMPREHENSION
Through the combination of images and text, comics facilitate comprehension by offering visual cues that aid in understanding complex concepts and narratives. LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
Comics encourage literacy development by immersing students in written language within a context that is both enjoyable and meaningful, thus improving vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension skills. CREATIVE & CRITICAL THINKING
Engaging with comics encourages students to think critically and creatively as they analyse visual elements, interpret narratives, and make connections between textual and visual information, fostering higher-order thinking skills. DIRECT ED - TODAY
Direct-Ed is committed to supporting schools as they navigate the ever-changing landscape of learning and development across different age groups – through the provision of high-quality learning resources and tools. By assessing the educational field and keeping up to date with changes, we are able to fill the gaps left by so many other school suppliers, not only providing the core basics for everyday learning but also delivering a series of supporting resources which bring lessons and school messages to life in innovative and efficient ways. Our mission is and always has been to always give schools the quality and value that they need to be able to rely on for consistent learning support. This means that our schoolbooks and in-school resources are matched with home learning packs and supporting tools for the benefit of parents and guardians. One of our latest ventures is our Creative Curriculum collection which taps into the need for engaging learning and creative outlets for pupils of all ages – introducing them to different styles of learning and brightening up the classroom and the curriculum for both primary and secondary students. Not only does this make the classroom a more inviting environment to learn in, but it allows more visually expressive pupils to thrive and determine their own style of learning. Lancashire, 1994
