A user query on early models of Open AI's ChatGPT application used about 10 times as much electricity as one (pre-generative AI) Google search. Generative AI is increasingly part of many digital services, and while it's not responsible for all data center energy use, its rise is coinciding with an expected doubling of data center power consumption between 2022 and 2026. By 2030, data centers could consume up to 9.1% of all electricity generation in the U.S., up from 4% in 2024.

Read our latest blog where leading researchers and technologists explain what makes generative AI so energy-intensive and highlight the impact it has on power grids and other consumers of electricity. We also explore the roles academia, industry, policymakers, and end users can play in managing AI's energy demands without stifling innovation.

We’re excited to announce an expansion in the scope of multidisciplinary journal PeerJ. Highly regarded for its innovative approach to open and transparent publishing, researchers across a broader range of related scientific fields can now submit to PeerJ’s flagship STM title.

In addition to Medicine & Health, Biology & Life Sciences, and Environmental Sciences, PeerJ (previously known as ‘PeerJ Life & Environment’) welcomes submissions in allied disciplines, including Chemistry, Materials Science and some fields of Engineering. This will offer authors a more streamlined publishing experience, enhanced visibility of their work and new opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Later in 2026, PeerJ will further broaden its scope to include Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and other areas of Engineering.

A program of updates to PeerJ.com has also been announced, designed to enhance the experience for authors and readers. Reflecting PeerJ’s expanded scope, the website will showcase a wider range of world-class research addressing today’s most pressing challenges.

We are pleased to announce a new way to publish in the journal Third World Quarterly – “Research Notes.” Dr. Marcos Scauso was appointed as an Academic Editor at Third World Quarterly last year and is championing the Research Notes format to amplify Global South scholarship. The Global Souths Hub interviewed Marcos to ask him what the addition of Research Notes will mean to scholarship.

Marcos explained: “I believe this particular format will help bring underrepresented discussions and debates into the academic community and beyond, reaching audiences who are used to reading more typical, traditional, and sometimes repetitive scholarship. For too long, important voices and innovative work have been overlooked. Research Notes can help bridge that gap by delving into familiar topics, and by providing an alternative methodological, theoretical, and empirical angle.”

Since beginning our Open Access (OA) Books program in 2013, we have published over 1,700 partially OA books (books which contain one or more OA chapters as well as non-OA chapters), in addition to our catalogue of over 3,200 fully OA titles.

We are proud to share findings from one of the first pieces of research to look at the impact of publishing individual chapters OA on usage.

This new analysis serves to underscore the positive findings from last year’s research on the impact of born and retrospective fully OA publication on eBook usage, which demonstrated a clear and significant boost in engagement for OA titles compared to non-OA titles.

The 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer Global Report found that people don't trust the media in 14 of the 28 countries it surveyed. The report also found that most people think news organizations would: prefer to attract a big audience than tell people what they want to know; and rather support an ideology than inform the public.

Do you trust the media, and why do you think this trust in the media has declined?

Our newest blog looks at research that highlights why it's critical that people have trust in the media and why it has declined. We then examine ways journalists, media organizations, and policymakers can rebuild trust in the media. Take a read: https://tinyurl.com/RebuildingTrustInTheMedia

We were honored to be asked to present on the topic of energy security at “Evidence Week in Parliament” held by Sense about Science. Evidence Week brings together the public, researchers and parliamentarians to discuss how evidence is used and scrutinized at Westminster. It empowers legislators to engage with evidence, and equips them and their staff with critical skills, including tools to handle uncertainty, identify bias and scrutinize underlying assumptions.

Taylor & Francis’ policy briefing asked: ‘Can energy transition co-exist with energy security?’ Dr. Victor Azubike, Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, Consultant at CIRUU Energy London and author of an article published in the Journal of Energy & Natural Resources Law, discussed with parliamentarians the urgent need for strategic planning to resolve the policy challenge of balancing immediate energy security concerns and the imperative of systematic decarbonization.
