Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are home to 85% of the world's population but produce just 0.2% of researchers, so increasing these numbers is crucial. We’re committed to development initiatives that support librarians, authors, and researchers in low- and middle-income countries, and work with organizations such as Research4Life, whose mission is to “build an inclusive, diverse, and equitable scholarly communications environment.”

Our Research and Analytics Manager Tiffany Drake, along with Sustainability Manager Catherine Hodgson, found 4,500 articles, published by researchers from Research4Life countries in the past 4 years, affiliated with an Education institute, that cited at least one pay-to-read Taylor & Francis article from a journal to which Taylor & Francis provides Research4Life access.

Everything from the smartphone in your pocket to satellites is producing staggering amounts of geographical data daily. Geoinformatics, which solves real-world problems using geospatial information and technologies to manage, analyze, and visualize geospatial data, is a very fast-growing area of research that’s outpacing growth across many other research areas, according to data platform Dimensions.

Why is this important? We spoke to three geoinformatics experts, Dr. Songnian Li, Dr. Samantha Lavender, and Dr. Esra Ozdenerol, to highlight some of the many exciting and innovative ways researchers use this data to solve pressing issues, from environmental change to inequality.

Inclusive Publishing is co-ordinated and managed by the DAISY Consortium, a not-for-profit global collective of organizations committed to delivering worldwide change to achieve the common vision that “people have equal access to information and knowledge regardless of disability; a right confirmed by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 35% of people affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) live in Africa.

To fight NTDs, public health authorities need to monitor the spread of infection. But diagnosis takes time, and cases often go undetected where patients are asymptomatic or don’t have adequate access to health care.

That’s where wastewater-based epidemiology comes in. By analyzing wastewater, researchers can detect the pathogens that cause NTDs, providing real-time data on outbreaks. As Benedict Ofori highlights, this approach has the power to revolutionize NTD control, drastically improving the health of communities across Africa.

United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) data tells us that the world is falling far behind in achieving quality education for all. Without additional measures put into place, by 2030, 300 million students will lack basic numeracy/literacy skills, and only 1 in 6 countries will achieve the universal secondary school completion target.

To add to this, there is a massive global teacher shortage. We invited five of the world's leading authorities on teaching and K-12 education to share their insights on how we can address this crisis head-on. Read what they had to say: https://tinyurl.com/Addressing-Teacher-Shortage
