Aaaw what a lovely night away at the The Celtic Manor Resort for my eldest's birthday. Starting with Elf - The Musical. Suitably attired in full on Elf style of course! I'd never been to the ICCWales before. What a great venue. We didn't even know there was an ice rink too. We'll definitely be heading back next year. Felt like a treat staying just 2 miles down the road but was lovely to spoil my Mum & even better when my son turned up to surprise his older sister for her big day. Such precious family time especially an extended game of Uno in the bar & being trounced by 7 & 13 year old Grandchildren. We all enjoyed breakfast together this morning before I headed off to work at Abergavenny Market & they all went off for a swim at the hotel. Making every moment count. Just perfect to see in the New Year. Happy Birthday Jess ❤️

Well what a lovely Christmas Day spent with my Mum & Dad, two out of three of my grown-up children & my gorgeous Grandchildren. This was round one (sadly without my son who volunteered to work so that colleagues with children could enjoy time together). Round two was a lovely evening with my partner's family & today I'm not even getting out of my PJs! It's not always easy to negotiate sharing time between families but sometimes it's about making new traditions & coming to decisions together from a place of love & gratitude. Round three is on Saturday. I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas Day & are enjoying some down time❤️

Well that's a wrap! Delyn Thomas & I have just packed everything away in the shop ready for our Xmas break. It's stuffed full to within an inch of its life & we have no idea how we managed to close the doors! We will reopen on Tuesday 31st December. Thank you to everyone that has come in to buy from us this year or if you just popped in for a chat. Also to everyone that has bought online, commented, shared or liked social media posts. Every little helps & we are so grateful to each & every one of you. We couldn't do it without your support. See you New Year's Eve. Nadolig Llawen🎄

It was a busy day yesterday in the market with lots of welsh blankets, coats & vintage goodies going off to new homes for Christmas. There was a lovely atmosphere with a brass band playing carols up on the library balcony & it made for a perfect backdrop to get a visit from my fellow Welsh wool loving online follower Sue. It's always nice to swap tales & put names to faces. One of the best sides of my job ❤️

Bit of a 'bluesy' theme going on for tomorrow's stall then?!!! Just packing up some new finds for this weekend ready to bring them in to Abergavenny Market. Gorgeous vintage blue Welsh wool tapestry coat (size 14 to 16ish), original coastal oil painting, duck egg blue painted wooden stool, handmade rag wreath & my favourite French enamelware jug. Looking forward to incorporating them into the display along with matching Welsh blankets as ever. Don't forget the market is open Saturday & Sunday this weekend so 'double helpings' of loveliness ❤️

***BOTH SOLD ***Matchy matchy! One of my favourite vintage colours. This fabulous forest green Welsh blanket in traditional Caernarfonshire portcullis design is always the one that sets my lovely customers off on their nostalgic journey. I love hearing the regional variations of 'my Nain had that one', 'my Mamgu had that on her bed' or 'our Mam was given that as a wedding gift in the 60's'. Why not go the full monty & have the matching cape?!! I can see myself draped on a chaise longue covered in this blanket whilst wearing the matching cape (but I'll just have to make do with a market trolley) Full on Welshness ready for Tuesday at Abergavenny Market tomorrow!

Mam, Mum, Mummy, Nan, Nanny, Nain, Mamgu, Grandma, Granny - what resonates with you?

Apologies to anyone hoping to catch me at the market today but they've just taken the wise decision to close Abergavenny Market due to safety concerns. Hopefully catch you tomorrow for a lovely extra Christmas trading day. I'm off back to bed with a book & a coffee 🎄

***SOLD ***DO YOU REMEMBER? Does anyone have any memories of these?!!! I know I certainly do & my partner has a gorgeous orange one that has been passed down from the Rhondda Valley. These traditional Welsh blankets or 'carthen' in Welsh were principally made in 3 mills in Carmarthenshire ie. Gwili, Cwmgwili & Elfet during post war years & later by Derw Mill who bought out Cwmgwili. They were sold at shops & markets like Carmarthen, Neath, Llanelli, Pontypridd, Newport, Pontypool & Abergavenny Market as well as door-to-door in the South Wales Valleys. It was a huge tradition to buy them as a wedding gift or for 'the bottom drawer' & pass them down to the next generation. These two 1950's beauties are on the stall & I am loving continuing the tradition of selling these wares at a local market. Shop is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday & additionally SUNDAY this week. Hope to see you.

Apologies to anyone who was hoping to catch me at Abergavenny Market today. I was due to open for the Christmas Artisan Event run by Artisan Events Wales but I've only just got home after 3 detours trying to get into Aber. Unfortunately couldn't make it through the floods & road closures. Even detoured through Monmouth & across to Hereford but the road down to Abergavenny was blocked with cars actually floating in the road. Took ages to turn everybody around & I was feeling decidedly nervous in my tiny Citroën C1. They were even pumping water off the A449 from Monmouth back to Newport. All the years I've been trading here I've never been unable to get in. Never seen it so bad. I'll hopefully see you Tuesday.

Stay safe everyone (I need wine now)

For those of you who are looking for somewhere to go for a lovely dry day out of the rain tomorrow there is a fabulous independent Christmas craft market being held in our market hall hosted by Artisan Events Wales . Some of our shop traders will be open. I'll be there & so will Fizzyville & DragonPainter . Our two cafés Nosh & Cozy Cup will also be open. The hall will be filled with super talented artisan makers showcasing their wares so it will be an excellent opportunity to pick up some special Xmas gifts 🎁

My most commonly asked question - What is a Welsh Blanket?

A Welsh blanket is a loom woven blanket made from 100% Welsh wool (the vintage ones) which is breathable, hard wearing, easy to care for & so warm. Known for its unique colours and patterns, some designs are specific to certain mills

Welsh blankets have been around since the 12th century, and were once a major industry in Wales (bigger than coal mining). The industry almost disappeared in the 20th century, but has seen a resurgence in demand in recent years.

Welsh blankets are known for their unusual colours and patterns, and often feature a reversible double-cloth construction. The Caernarfon 'portcullis' pattern, with its grid-like 'space invader' is perhaps the most recognizable Welsh blanket design. They are often passed down through generations & were traditionally given as wedding gifts.

They are still made today by artisan mills in Wales. There are only a handful of working mills left out of 300 that originally operated.

Nothing says 'hiraeth' like a Welsh blanket. They are a stylish addition to any room or home, and are in high demand in Wales, the UK, and worldwide. I've stacked my shop collection up...
