MUSLIM SCHOLAR SAYS: DO NOT ‘CONVERT’ TO ISLAM

… as renowned Irish singer Sinead O'Connor, who embraced Islam, is remembered as "The Greatest Voice of Her Generation."

Last month, the world mourned the loss of Irish celebrity and singer, Sinead O'Connor. Fondly remembered for her powerful and soulful voice, O'Connor's passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow artists alike, who have hailed her as "the greatest voice of her generation."

One notable aspect of Sinead O'Connor's life was her spiritual journey. In 2018, she expressed her wish to convert to Islam and approached Dr. Umar al-Qadri, the chief imam of Islamic Centre Ireland, to initiate her Shahada ceremony. The Shahadah is the testimony of faith, traditionally believed to be an essential part of the conversion process, where new converts, often referred to as reverts, recite a declaration affirming their belief in the oneness of God and the prophethood of Muhammad.

However, Muslim scholar and author, Paigham Mustafa, has stated that the Shahada ceremony and the changing of names to Arabic names are unnecessary for embracing Islam. According to Mustafa, what truly matters is a genuine belief in the implementation of the Quran as a guide for personal development and the betterment of society.
Mustafa emphasises that recognition of Muslims does not come from superficial symbols like the hijab or certificates of conversion but from their values and conduct. He highlights the Quran's universal values, which can be defined as the Permanent Values, and encourages people to align their values with these principles to become true Muslims. The word ‘muslim’ is not a label or title, but a description of a person recognised for their high standards of probity and harmony with the Quran's guidance, says Mustafa.
Mustafa points out the distinction between being a Muslim – someone who harmonises with the Quranic values—and individuals who claim to be ‘Muslim’ but follow supplementary texts like the hadith, leading to various beliefs conflicting with the Quran. He emphasises that the Shahadah testimony, though significant for some sects, is not a requirement found in the Quran and was not sanctioned by Prophet Muhammad, who strictly adhered to the Quran's teachings.

Mustafa cautions against blind adherence to rituals and the dangers of deviant beliefs arising from unquestioning religious practises. He encourages people to embrace Islam based on sincere understanding and internalising its guiding principles.

As the world remembers the remarkable talent of Sinead O'Connor, her journey towards Islam serves as a reminder of the significance of universal values and the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding.

SIGTALK: CHALLENGING MEDIA NARRATIVES AND MUSLIM PERCEPTION OF ISLAM
A Thought-Provoking Talk Held at Union Café & Bistro Aberdeen

On 25th July 2023, Union Café & Bistro Aberdeen was abuzz with insightful discussions as attendees gathered for SIGTALK, a captivating speaking event featuring author and speaker, Paigham Mustafa. The event delved into the portrayal of Muslims in British media and its impact on perceptions of Islam, shedding light on critical issues prevalent in today society.

The event commenced with an eye-opening analysis conducted by the Muslim Council of Britain, revealing a disconcerting pattern in mainstream media news stories concerning Muslims. The majority of these stories carried a negative slant, contributing to the perpetuation of the demonization of Islam. The audience was presented with thought-provoking questions: How accurate and fair is this portrayal? What consequences does it have for the wider perception of Islam?

Drawing from his vast expertise, Paigham Mustafa led the attendees into a stimulating dialogue that challenged prevailing narratives and biases. Through his insights and personal experiences, he encouraged an open and honest exchange of ideas. The aim was to bridge the gap between media representations and the reality of Islam in our diverse society.

An interesting revelation from a YouGov poll of Tory members by the campaign group Hope Not Hate was shared during the event, indicating that a significant percentage of respondents perceived Islam as a threat to Western civilization and the British way of life. Mustafa explained that such perceptions arise from misconceptions, where the actions of a few individuals are wrongly attributed to the entire Islamic community.

One of the key topics explored during the talk was the Islamic perspective on journalism and its alignment with modern media ethics. Understanding this aspect is crucial in comprehending how Muslims are accurately projecting their beliefs and practises to the wider public and how media portrayals might influence their perception of Islam.

Throughout the event, the audience, comprising people from many backgrounds, actively engaged in the discussions, challenging stereotypes, fostering empathy, and promoting a more informed and inclusive narrative surrounding Muslims and their beliefs. The event served as a platform for introspection, fostering dialogue and harmony among diverse communities.

Paigham Mustafa eloquently summarised the essence of SIGTALK, stating, "Together, let's embark on a journey of understanding and bridge the gap between media representations and the reality of Islam in our diverse society."

Author Paigham Mustafa Speaks Out Against Taliban Oppression and the Decline of Islamic Learning in Afghanistan

In the wake of the Taliban's takeover of Kabul nearly two years ago, Afghanistan has witnessed a distressing decline in learning and education, reminiscent of historical setbacks in the Muslim world. Author and scholar, Paigham Mustafa, has expressed grave concern over this alarming state of affairs and the detrimental impact it has on the country's progress and intellectual growth.

The Ottoman Empire's rejection of the printing press in 1436, influenced by religious leaders, severely impeded educational advancement within the Muslim world. Similarly, the Taliban's current policies are perpetuating a bleak future for education and knowledge in Afghanistan.

Before the Taliban's rise to power, many Afghans diligently pursued education, contributing to a vibrant intellectual community. However, the oppressive regime is now driving educated individuals away from the country. Scholars, professors, doctors, engineers, writers, and artists, among others, have fled in search of a safer environment where knowledge is valued.

Particularly troubling is the detrimental impact on women's education. Female educators struggle to retain their positions, and girls are discouraged from attending school. As a result, women are excluded from the education system as both learners and educators, further deepening the crisis.

The restrictions imposed by the Taliban extend to the publishing industry as well. New books that question the Taliban ideology face censorship, hindering intellectual diversity and stifling critical thinking. The cumbersome process of obtaining publishing permission from the Taliban Ministry of Information and Culture has led to a decline in book availability, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the book industry.

Scores of bookstores and publishing houses have shut down due to the shrinking customer base caused by the ban on women's education and the disillusionment of young men who drop out of school. In addition, the Taliban government has imposed high taxes on book sales, adding to the industry's financial woes.

Paigham Mustafa, a British Muslim scholar who has extensively researched the Quran since 1985, spoke out against the oppressive policies. He lamented, "It is extremely painful to witness Afghanistan, a country that claims its Islamic heritage, act in total contradiction with the teachings of the Quran."

Mustafa emphasised that the Quran places significant importance on education, gender equality, and the dissemination of knowledge. Deviating from these principles has led to the current predicament faced by Muslims in Afghanistan and beyond.

"Reading, writing, and understanding the Quran's guidance are essential aspects of our belief," Mustafa stated. "We must reorient ourselves towards the Quran as the primary source of motivation and regain the dynamic convictions that once defined our communities."

He further urged Muslims to reinstate the Quran's decree for education, embracing its teachings to advance their societies and ensure the welfare of all its members.

Amidst the challenges, Paigham Mustafa's books, including "The Quran: God's Message to Mankind" and "The Divine Blueprint," continue to offer invaluable insights and guidance for those seeking knowledge and a path towards progress.

Paigham Mustafa is an author, scholar, and researcher of the Quran with a profound dedication to Islamic education and progress. His works provide deep insights into the Quran's teachings and their practical application in contemporary societies. Mustafa's passion for knowledge and understanding has earned him respect and recognition among readers and scholars worldwide.

Mustafa will be speaking at the Union Cafe and Bistro, Aberdeen on Tuesday, 25th July 2023 at 6.30pm - Check our event here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/challenging-media-narratives-and-muslim-perceptions-about-islam-tickets-665164915167

Paigham Mustafa: Police racism admission must turn into hate crime action

A MUSLIM scholar who has been living under a fatwa for two decades is hoping his case will get more attention from Police Scotland after the organisation admitted to being institutionally racist.

Paigham Mustafa, who lives in Scotland, claims the police have not “adequately addressed” the threat on his life from the religious edict calling for “action to be taken against him”.

A fatwa - which was issued to Mustafa by several mosques in the west of Scotland - is a decree from an Islamic religious leader and in Mustafa's case means the threat of ex*****on.

Mustafa is believed to be the only person in the UK living under such a threat since Salman Rushdie left the UK for the US.

He claims the force’s lack of action is because it "fears being branded Islamophobic".

In 2021, Police Scotland said hate law does not apply to Mustafa’s case as it requires an intention to stir up hatred against a group rather than an individual, but Mustafa said this raises questions about whether individuals are sufficiently protected from hate crimes committed by institutions.

After Chief Constable Sir Iain Livingstone last month admitted the Police Scotland is “institutionally racist and discriminatory”, Mustafa said he hopes there can be further scrutiny of hate crimes and action taken over his case.

He told The National: “When I listened to the Chief Constable’s comments I realised I felt vindicated that comments I had previously made were correct and now I am hoping things will change and we can move forward.

“There’s been nothing from the police so far. They have ticked the box in terms of an investigation but they have done nothing useful and I think the reasons behind that are coming forward now.”

A statement sent out by his publishing company Signat said Mustafa finds the inaction around his case “deeply concerning”.

Chief Inspector Jamie Harrison wrote to Mustafa after the investigation to say no criminality was established after advice was sought from the Islamic community and the Police Scotland equality and diversity unit.

Signat said Mustafa is critical of Police Scotland’s decision to seek advice from the “very institutions accused of spreading hate, questioning the validity and impartiality of the investigation”.

The statement went on: “Sir Iain Livingstone’s acknowledgement of institutional racism and discrimination within Police Scotland is a significant development.

“It highlights the urgent need for the police to address these deep-rooted issues and demonstrates the importance of championing equality and becoming an anti-racist service.

“To ensure justice and equal protection for all individuals, it is crucial that the police thoroughly investigate hate crimes, regardless of the identities of the victims or the institutions involved.

“In conclusion, Police Scotland’s acknowledgement of institutional racism is an essential step towards reforming the police force. However, the case of Paigham Mustafa highlights the need for further scrutiny and improvement in handling hate crimes.

“Protecting individuals from all forms of discrimination and ensuring their safety should be a fundamental duty of law enforcement agencies.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A thorough investigation of Mr Mustafa’s concerns was carried out and no criminality was established.

“Advice was also sought from the Islamic community and Police Scotland’s Equality and Diversity Unit in order to provide the most suitable advice to Mr Mustafa.

“In addition, trained officers carried out an extensive security survey for Mr Mustafa and the outcome of this has been communicated with him.”
