“OUR” BY BREAKING FUEL

Breaking Fuel, the experimental, avant garde electro-rock duo from Bordeaux, France have just released a two track EP entitled “Our”. The tracks featured are “Bring Me The Lights” and “Animoil”.
Breaking Fuel consists of Maxime Barreau and Antoine Dochier. With this record and their previous EP they have guest collaborators which have included members of The Mars Volta and Big Sir.
“Bring Me The Lights” has a late night jazz club vibe about it. Heavy emphasis on jazz style drumming with some great shuffle fills. This is a great track that has many competing elements all perfectly combining to produce an alternative lo-fi rock track. There are hints of British indie rock, experimental electronica and ambient pop.
This is a heady cocktail that really works. It is fascinating to listen to. Their sound is innovative, upbeat and although experimental it is not too niche as to scare away a lot of music fans.
“Animoil” is a contrasting track and is a bit more whimsical and poppy with cheery group vocalising. I hear faint echoes of The Flaming Lips in some parts of the song, particularly from their “Yoshimi” period.
This track although it has a pop feel, it is definitely not mainstream. There are some world music influences from the legendary Fela Kuti.
I like this record very much. If you have a broad musical knowledge base and have experience of many different genres and styles of music, I think Breaking Fuel are a band worth checking out, I really do. However if you are only faithful to one specific genre of music, be it rock, punk, metal or pop, then it might not be for you. I should point out though, with music as well as other things in life, you should try everything once!
As musicians Maxime and Antoine are beyond fearless and should be applauded for pushing musical boundaries and creating new and interesting flavours. Breaking Fuel are interesting, innovative and worthy of investing time in when looking for new music to explore. I had heard some of their previous EP, but “Our” shows an advancement in their sound and I am beyond intrigued to find out what they are going to do next.
This EP is worth checking out if you are tired of the norm and wish to explore parts of the musical landscape you have not visited before. Who knows? You might find a new kind of musical pleasure you never knew existed. Just press play and see what happens.
