The fashion industry faces scrutiny once again as Dior and Armani are accused of exploiting migrant workers in their Italian factories.
While luxury handbags sell for thousands, the workers crafting them earn only $2 an hour.

With companies prioritising profits over people, the question arises: How can we support ethical practices in the fashion industry?

WHERE IS THE NEWS NOW AND WHAT CAN IT BECOME?

Many would argue that the news has not evolved much beyond the inception of Pathe. Newsreaders sit behind desks or stand in front of screens and real life news events are reported from static locations. It is a world where it’s rare not to hear “Queen’s English” accents unless a member of the public is offering their limited input in the form of vox pops. With each emerging generation the news in its current format is rapidly becoming irrelevant, out of sync with modern times and our changing needs. Ask anyone on the street how they feel about the news and the best you may be met with is a “mehhh”. Beyond this, there is fury, a legitimate degree of mistrust, echo chambers and fake news.

We also seem to have taken it as a given that news must be depressing. In fact, sport and celebrity features are the only route by which to find anything vaguely uplifting. Unsurprisingly, younger generations are becoming indifferent to the news and have chosen to disengage with it.

This is where social media steps in. However, current platforms offer us facile connection as they try to cover too many bases, news being just one. Facebook is the most popular social media option for news but good luck wading your way through the endless shots of friend’s lunches in order to locate it. This is sub ideal.

So, what’s missing? I guess the real question is, why when the news affects us all are so few of us actually involved? Especially at a time when to do so has never been simpler. I would argue that, in fact, to do so is the inevitable solution. If we are not invited to the conversation, maybe it’s time to start our own. If we can’t trust them, maybe we can begin to trust us.
