The “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” event, held in Glasgow, promised families an enchanting chocolate-themed experience inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but turned out to be a marketing disaster. Tickets priced at £35 each attracted parents and children with the hope of a whimsical, immersive day. Instead, visitors were greeted by a minimally decorated warehouse, sparse sweets, and underwhelming characters, leading to widespread disappointment.

WHERE IS THE NEWS NOW AND WHAT CAN IT BECOME?
Many would argue that the news has not evolved much beyond the inception of Pathe. Newsreaders sit behind desks or stand in front of screens and real life news events are reported from static locations. It is a world where it’s rare not to hear “Queen’s English” accents unless a member of the public is offering their limited input in the form of vox pops. With each emerging generation the news in its current format is rapidly becoming irrelevant, out of sync with modern times and our changing needs. Ask anyone on the street how they feel about the news and the best you may be met with is a “mehhh”. Beyond this, there is fury, a legitimate degree of mistrust, echo chambers and fake news.
We also seem to have taken it as a given that news must be depressing. In fact, sport and celebrity features are the only route by which to find anything vaguely uplifting. Unsurprisingly, younger generations are becoming indifferent to the news and have chosen to disengage with it.
This is where social media steps in. However, current platforms offer us facile connection as they try to cover too many bases, news being just one. Facebook is the most popular social media option for news but good luck wading your way through the endless shots of friend’s lunches in order to locate it. This is sub ideal.
So, what’s missing? I guess the real question is, why when the news affects us all are so few of us actually involved? Especially at a time when to do so has never been simpler. I would argue that, in fact, to do so is the inevitable solution. If we are not invited to the conversation, maybe it’s time to start our own. If we can’t trust them, maybe we can begin to trust us.
We Are The News (WATN) is the solution. This new, news based social media platform is where the formal meets the informal, news and entertainment sit alongside one another, in a space that is both credible and exciting.
WATN tells the news from three perspectives: Show the News, Tell the News and Be the News. The Show and Tell sections offer an objective viewpoint and the Be the News a subjective one. Users are free to submit to any or all of the three sections.
Show the News: Capitalises on the fact that almost all of us have a smart phone on us almost all of the time. This is a powerful tool, in terms of getting the real truth out there. The traditional medium is limited, restricted by bulky filming equipment. We however are not.
Tell the News: Offers all of us the kudos of being a news anchor, imparting the facts, via reading globally sourced news.
Be the News: Is where the subjective viewpoint can be explored. The individual and their experiences are given due reverence. Here, participants can either talk about their personal experience of how the news has affected them or they can hold their own interviews. In this section users are also free to promote their business or brand.
We Are The News is the future and the future starts here, with you at the beating heart of it.
Watch this space for more information on how you can make a difference. Show, Tell and Be with We Are The News.
