On this day in 1960, EMI Studios hosted its first recording session using the REDD.37 mixing desk, a pioneering four track console designed by the Record Engineering Development Department (REDD) at the studios.

EMI had purchased a Telefunken four-track tape machine and briefed the REDD engineers to produce a four-track mixing desk. From this, came the REDD.37 mixing desk, situated in Studio Two that would become central to all Beatles’ recordings until 1964, when it was replaced with a sleek, new REDD.51

The first session using the REDD.37 was Dickie Pride’s LP recorded in 3 hours by Peter Bown and Michael Dent; powered by 31 Siemens V72s valve amplifier.
