Episode 1 of Season 3. It was a real pleasure to meet and talk to Michael Blann. I discovered that we had a few things in common and a good Aussie connection. Michael is a professional photographer who has a passion for epic mountain landscapes. He’s also a keen cyclist and is a budding DJ he likes deep American garage and Italian house. This was a great conversation and a perfect way to kick off season 3.

Looking back at 2023 it was a good year on the podcast. I meet some fascinating and inspiring people.
First off was the free-spirited and talented ski instructor, Victorian Irissou. His life is in balance, always on his skis or his boards, his snowboard, skateboard or surfboard. His life is spent between the big mountains and the big waves.
Then there was the always-inspiring Liv Sanzos. The big mountain athlete and high mountain guide spoke about the importance of Living your best life and reminded me that the taste of effort and discomfort feels good.
Lakpa Sherpa. He has reached the summit of Mount Everest 7 times. He taught me the importance of having good karma and positive thinking. If you think this way you can reach the highest summits.
Dr Heidi Sevestre. A glaciologist whose passion for glaciers and her fight for climate change is infectious. The conversation I had with her opened my eyes to the important fight for climate action we all must take up. I may not be able to vote for political change but I can change the way I consume; the things I eat and buy and how I travel. You can follow Protect Our Winters if you want to learn more about climate change and how you can get involved.
Kristy Shelley. A practitioner of Rolfing. A special form of massage and soft tissue manipulation that is helping people to stay mobile and pain-free in the mountains. Our mobility and how we move are important for a long life outdoors. She motivated me to stretch more and use my kettlebells more often.
Then there was the Legend of Steep Skiing Anslem Baud. He is a high mountain guide and steep skier who was comfortable in icy couloirs that were between 45 and 60 degrees steep. He was able to remain calm and control his emotions in these no-fall zones.
Finally, I got to speak to Fred Buttard a high mountain guide and adventure seeker. He spends all his time outdoors in the mountains of the Alpes and the Scandinavian mountains of Sweden, Norway, and Finland. If he is not splitboarding, you can find him seeking the trails less travelled on his gravel bike.
So as I look back on 2023, I am also looking forward to 2024. I plan to do more episodes and talk to different people around the world. I have signed up to a remote recording app so I can interview people in different mountains around the world. So if you know anyone or if you have some good friends who you think will make a good guest on the show please let me know. I am always looking for interesting people to talk to and share their stories. They could be artists, musicians, athletes, business owners, or anyone who enjoys life in the mountains.
I want to have a big year in 2024 and I hope you’ll follow along. If you are enjoying the show, please reach out. I promise to reply and I’d love to hear from you. Thanks, Ashley.

For all my French friends, a great guest of the show Dr Heidi Sevestre will be on LCP French television tomorrow night with her documentary "Heidi's Ice" Please watch.

New episode is out now. It was a real pleasure to sit down and talk with Fred about his mountain life.
I read somewhere that when you are in the mountains you have to move with deliberate intent, to move with purpose and be fluid with your movement, observe your surroundings and look ahead to where you are going..
This is how I feel Fred speaks and acts. He is very intentional and thoughtful when he speaks. And I think this came through in the interview. So I hope you enjoy this interview with Fred because I know I did.
Thanks Fred, next time we have to catch up over some beers, and not coffee.

What is steep skiing ? Anything over 40 degrees usually around 50-55 degrees steep.
Tomorrow I’m heading to the Mecca of alpinisme, mountain climbing and steep skiing, chamonix.
I’m going to interview one of the most influential steep skiers Anselme Baud. It’s definitely a no fall zone tomorrow. Stay tuned 👌

International Mountain Day is celebrated annually on 11 December to to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development, and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.
Beyond the mountains podcast will be back soon, to celebrate the people that “live, work and play” in the mountains.

We’re back!! A new episode is finally out, and I’m very happy to have met a fellow Aussie living her best life in the French Alps. Thanks Kristy (not Kirsty) for coming on my show. If you want to play hard in the mountains then you need to listen to this episode. Kristy @kristytherolfer gives some great insight into mobility and living pain free. Anyone living near Chamonix who has any niggling injuries should make an appointment to see her.
