French President Emmanuel Macron has nominated outgoing foreign minister Stéphane Séjourné to become the country's next European Commissioner, after Thierry Breton abruptly resigned from his post and withdrew his bid for a second term earlier on Monday.

In a statement, the Élysée Palace said that the decision was made "in accordance" with newly-appointed Prime Minister Michel Barnier, and confirmed France was angling for a "key" portfolio related to "industrial and technological sovereignty" and "European competitiveness."

Séjourné has served as France's Minister for Europe and foreign affairs since January.

Gisèle Pélicot, the woman who was allegedly drugged by her now ex-husband over the course of a decade so that she could be r***d by dozens of men while unconscious, is becoming a symbol of France’s fight against sexual violence.

Some 700 people gathered at Place de la Republique in Paris in support for the 71-year-old and all r**e victims in France. Some carried banners that hailed Pélicot for speaking out about her horrific ordeal and assured other victims of sexual violence that they are not alone. “Victims, we believe you. Rapists, we see you,” one banner said.

French President Emmanuel Macron is negotiating a powerful, wide-ranging competitiveness portfolio within the European Commission for his new commissioner-designate Stéphane Séjourné ahead of Tuesday's announcement by Ursula von der Leyen.

The new French commissioner-designate could oversee parts of trade, research and innovation, economy and financial services and capital markets union.

🚁 Les promoteurs des "taxis volants" électriques, qui voulaient profiter de la vitrine des Jeux olympiques pour des vols d'expérimentation à Paris, y ont renoncé faute de certification des moteurs dans les temps, ont-ils annoncé à l'AFP.

Le gestionnaire d'aéroports Groupe ADP et la start-up aéronautique allemande Volocopter visent désormais un vol "d'ici à la fin de l'année" depuis une plateforme flottant sur la Seine à Paris. Ils prévoient d'organiser des démonstrations avec un prototype, sans passager, jeudi et dimanche à l'aérodrome de Saint-Cyr-l'Ecole (Yvelines).

Not even Albert Einstein, the father of general relativity, thought that black holes could actually exist. However, ten years after Einstein’s death, the British theorist Roger Penrose demonstrated that black holes can form and described their properties. At their heart, black holes hide a singularity, a boundary at which all the known laws of nature break down.

To prove that black hole formation is a stable process, Penrose needed to expand the methods used to study the theory of relativity – tackling the theory’s problems with new mathematical concepts. Penrose’s ground-breaking article was published in January 1965 and is still regarded as the most important contribution to the general theory of relativity since Einstein.
