In light of the announcement of Glenn Marten's departure from , a story from Crash 81 ‘Radical Youth’ issue. Martens who had the role of creative director at for 11 years, was announced to step down from the role last week September 6, 2024. Back in 2017, Crash interviewed Martens and discussed his fashion background, how he came into the role of creative director and his various influences.

Martens recounts his introduction to fashion, “At 21, I had a degree but I was far too young to get work. I discovered the Academy in Antwerp during school trips because its such a beautiful building. I thought that fashion sounded fun, so I sat for the entrance exam with my portfolio of chairs and kitchens, and they let me in. It was rough going at first, because I had absolutely no fashion culture.”

Martens’ artistic vision brought a new life to Y/Project, gaining the label critical acclaim and commercial success through his experimental proportions and inventive detailing. In 2017, Martens won the Grand Prix. He continues to display his innovative perspective and bears great impact already.

THE ARCHIVE SERIES

Fashion month is underway starting with New York Fashion Week and ending with Paris Fashion Week. This story is featured in Crash 48 ‘New Paradigm’. Dated in 2008 for their Summer 2009 collection, this was Maison Margiela’s 20th Anniversary runway show set in Paris’ 19th arrondissement. Surrounded in darkness, the models faces were all covered using veils, wigs and drapery from the garments.

As a finale to the show, a three-dimensional “wedding cake” dress printed with pictures of cake was carried by two models, with only their legs visible under the piece. Margiela’s shows are notorious for their unique approach and use of deconstructive elements, both in design and setting.

This year’s Paris Fashion Week is from September 23, 2024 to October 1, 2024.

END OF SUMMER READING

In June 2023, the Gallery in London hosted the inaugural "It Just Happened" exhibition of Bob Collacello. This marked Colacello's first solo show in London wherein his photographs, letters, magazine and memorabilia were displayed as an ode to the lively party scene of the 1970s and '80s. The show was curated by Elena Foster and the Ivorypress team.

Earlier that year, Crash sat down with Bob Colacello and discussed his introduction to photography, how subjects were chosen by himself and Andy Warhol for Interview Magazine and more. Regarding the personalities that were featured in the magazine he said, “In Interview, we put famous people, less famous people, glamorous people. “Glamor” was the key word. And what is “glamor”? The definition of glamor is a mix of fame, style and artificiality.”

He recounted his approach to photography saying, “I liked when a less famous person was blocking half of a famous person because that’s how parties are. They’re like layers of people. That just added, I think, to the documentary quality. And also I was able to get very candid shots because nobody thought of me as a photographer. I was the editor of Andy’s magazine."

Bob Colacello is esteemed for his work as a writer, from his beginning at Village Voice to becoming the editor-in-chief of Interview Magazine from 1971 to 1983. He was a contributing editor for Vanity Fair for many years. His documentary-style photo captured public figures of the era in a more candid, casual manner providing a different perspective of the term “glamorous”. He has written several novels recounting his collaborations with Andy Warhol, his career and more.

IN CONVERSATION WITH VINCENT MACAIGNE

The International Arts Festival, Venezia Biennale has been ongoing since April 20th, 2024 and will come to an end on November 24th, 2024. The Venice International Film Festival, which began on August 28th, is known for its film screenings wherein films from all over the world are premiered. This year among several other French films, Emmanuel Mouret’s comedy-drama “Trois Amies” is premiering. One of the film’s actors Vincent Macaigne sat down with Crash back in 2019 to discuss his work at the time, his shift from classical theatre and his directorial expectations.

When asked about his desire to break free from classical theatre he said, “It’s not about breaking free from anything for me, I just think it’s fun. It’s a way of reaching out to people I like, and not reaching out to others. By doing something so brutal, and that almost revels in violence, it scares off certain people and brings in others. It’s a way of tattooing my show and sending the message that theaters belong to younger generations, too.”  He then explained his expectation when directing his actors and stated, “I expect them to put something personal into the project. I want them to reveal something of their age, their anger, and their vitality.”

Vincent has not only directed several films, but has starred as an actor in many - with four films currently on the way. He has received critical acclaim through various César nominations for Best Actor as well as several wins at International Film Festivals. "Trois Amies" premieres today August 30th at the Venice International Film Festival, and will continue to be screened through the festival.

Continuing our archives from the 2000s, this story is titled "German Gymnasium” photographed by Kira Bunse. Featured in our Crash 13 Sport! (2000) issue, the story highlights sportswear and the many ways it can be worn.

The evolution of sportswear can be seen 24 years later, as sportswear/athleisure is currently a sub-style of its own and is often sported outside of traditional sports settings. Brands like Adidas, Reebok and more are at the front of this movement, and continue to play a role in the cycle of fashion trends involving sportswear.

IN CELEBRATION OF COCO CHANEL

On this day in 1883, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was born. She was a pioneer in fashion who captured the the world through her innovative perpectives on women’s fashion. Chanel was most known for the Chanel suit, the quilted purse, and the “little black dress” - all pieces are classics till this day. She transformed fashion through redefining the clothing women wore, and doing so with elegant, simple and well-fitting clothes. Chanel is also credited for making trousers a key element in women’s closests and for liberating women from the then-popular corset silhouette.

IN MEMORY OF GENA ROWLANDS

On August 14, 2024 the talented and sensational actress, Gena Rowlands, sadly passed away. Rowlands had a career in film, stage and television that spanned nearly seven decades. Most known for her roles in the films “A Woman Under the Influence”, “Gloria”, and later “The Notebook”, she left a mark on many throughout the years. Rowlands was respected for her fearless and vulnerable portrayals of strong women, many of which were characters of the films directed by John Cassavetes.

After studying theatre, Rowlands made her broadway debut in 1956, in Paddy Chayefsky’s “Middle of the Night”. She then transitioned into film, which gained her critical acclaim over the years. She was a three-time Emmy Award winner and Oscar nominated, as well as an honorary Oscar Award in 2015.

Rowlands is often labeled as a star of US Indie cinema, for her raw and honest performances throughout her career. Her impact is undeniable and she will be greatly missed.

Featured in Crash 57, Francis Alys’s Fabiola displays several version of the renowned 19th Century (albeit lost) painting by Jean-Jacques Henner. Through the aim of building his personal artwork collection, Alys stumbled upon various renditions of the painting and began to collect them instead. Francis describes this phenomenon, "indicates a different criterion of what a masterwork could be."

While the artwork depicts the intricacies of what truly defines a masterwork, it is also an exploration of culture and beauty - with each “Fabiola” seemingly reflecting its painter’s surroundings and gaze. Most of these artworks are paintings, but some have been found to be made in needlepoint, wood relief and more.

IN MEMORY OF ANNIE LEBRUN

On July 29th 2024 the incomparable Annie Lebrun sadly passed away. Her impact on poetry and literature will forever remain with her well known works «Sur Le Champ», «Ombre pour Ombre» and «Du Trop du Realite» leaving her mark. In conversation with , Lebrun discusses virtualisation through the internet, “This is not unrelated to the establishment of the "dictatorship of visibility" in which we live today and whose major innovation is that is has merged both control and profit. The selfie is a striking example of this process of colonization through image. We are becoming more and more dependent on it, even as we believe we can find our freedom in it.”

She then discusses themes explored in her books «This Will Kill That» and «That Which is Priceless», such as the “colonisation of our internal landscapes” and the ways in which the Covid lockdown not only amplified but confirmed it.

Annie Lebrun was a member of the French Surrealist group, a fearless intellectual and a literary critic whose work challenges common ideologies and conceptions. Among her poetry, she was also an essayist. Lebrun curated a a show in 2014 at the Musee D’Orsay, on the death of Marquis de Sade. Her work stands the test of time and she will be greatly missed.

IN CONVERSATION: SUE NABI, NICOLAS VU & ARMELLE LETURCQ

During an interview with Armelle Leturcq, Sue Nabi and Nicolas Vu discuss the new Coty line - Infiniment Coty Paris - of fourteen fragrances that reinvent the company’s iconic heritage through a combination of scientific innovation and sustainability. In describing how the fragrances came about Nabi says, “It was very innovative. Integrating this perfume line into Coty, one of the world’s leading perfume companies, was also a way of concentrating the best of the company’s expertise, which was somewhat fragmented or not always used in our various license brands. Infiniment Coty Paris is honestly the pinnacle of what the Coty group can do in terms of formulation.”

When asked about the segmentation of the products and who the target was they depict the current desire for quality, “They prefer to buy less, but better. In fact, as CEO of Coty, I talk a lot with my investors and they all ask me why perfume is the fastest-growing category in the United States, Europe and Asia, especially China. The reality is that perfume has reinvented itself.” Nabi and Vu then further discuss their innovative packaging, their fusion of cosmetics and contemporary art as well as the personification of the fragrance notes.

SUMMER READING

In conversation with Armelle Leturcq and Frank Perrin, Slimane recounts his introduction to photgraphy and how fashion came after the fact. He states, “A deserted house, and broken branches. My first photo, probably. It seems fairly unlikely. So it was the first thing you did? Yes – the first thing I did, and it was fairly organic. Then I did portraits of my friends. I’ve kept almost everything.”

He then details his use of black and white which can be seen in books BERLIN, STAGE and LONDON: BIRTH OF A CULT, “In fact I never learned how to use a colour enlarger, although I’ve got nothing against colour as such. What I find interesting is that black and white considerably reduces the actual photographic effect in the first meaning of the word. It’s a short cut.” He continues, “Black and white is probably a convention, a sign, or an archaism connected with the world of rock performance.”

When asked about the fascination or attraction on the part of fashion for contemporary art he replies, “Quite the opposite; I feel fashion is being integrated into art and there’s an organic correlation. Quite a few artists have integrated fashion into their work. Fashion is becoming an area of what is possible, an area for transformation, and nowadays it occupies a reconstituted perimeter.”

Armelle Leturcq

Six years ago, on July 26, 2019, Oksana Chatchko (co-founder of the Femen movement and artist) passed away. Many of her family and friends were left out and unable to attend her funeral. This doubled the pain.

Attempts were made to monopolize her body of work. Even some of the funds raised for her funeral and her family were misappropriated. Finally, papers were signed by her mother, without her understanding of what they meant, in order to get their hands on Oksana's artistic legacy.

Fortunately today, after a legal battle, Oksana's works are safe and sound.

I was very proud to be able to present one of her icons in the “Nobody is A Stranger” exhibition at the No Name space. Armelle Leturcq

The Archive Series #1

In remembering Alexander McQueen, we revisit images from Crash back issues capturing the stunning mise en scènes of his shows.

Part of Frank Perrin series “Défilés" shown in Musée Galliera, and around the world. These images captured a new, unfamiliar perspective to fashion shows that had yet to be explored. With a far away perspective, the essence of the shows were highlighted. The series then went on to be acquired by public collections.

SUMMER READING

In conversation with Crash’s editor-in-chief, Armelle Leturcq, Hopper who released his book “Photographs, 1961 - 1967” details his relationship to photography and his very first moment picking up a camera. He describes his first years in Los Angeles, subsequently leading him to New York City where he met revered artists of the time.

After prioritizing his acting career in the 1960s, Hopper describes his return to photography, “Like an alcoholic, I suddenly bought fifty rolls of 36mm film and started machine gunning everything interesting I found again.”

Despite his book acting as a time capsule of memories, he describes a lack of nostalgia when looking at the images and instead says, “No, I don’t think about time passing. I only say to myself: “looks like a good time….”

Mia Khalifa for Crash 100 «  Time Capsule ». Born in Beirut in 1993 and later moved to the United States where she continues to live and work today.
Her interpersonal journey led her to become one of the most acclaimed figures on social media both for her past, which many have described as controversial, and also for her personality and her deconstruction and indictment of the s*x industry, which has led her to lecture on the subject around the world, cautioning those susceptible to falling prey to an often deceptive and flourishing industry.

Linder Sterling, born in Liverpool and known commonly as Linder, is a British artist best known for her photographs, photomontages and performances that focus on femininity, feminism and its various conflicts and contrasts.

29/05/2024

We are delighted to present « Nobody is a stranger » curated by Crash editor in chief Armelle Leturcq, at No Name art space, with 22 artists from the French scene.

The initial reflection of NOBODY IS A STRANGER was France and the French scene. Which does not mean ‘‘French artist’’. But in order to go beyond the questions of nationality, integrate artists who have a link with France, by thinking of the French scene, which is an apart scene, include the ‘‘foreigners to themselves’’, those excluded from the art market, the internal nomads, those who are not in established networks, artists’ of artists.

The history of the avant-gardes obviously demonstrates this, France and Paris have always been a place of refuge for artists mistreated in their country: the exiled, the refugees, the stateless, the uprooted, the misunderstood.

The expression Nobody is a Stranger was used by the surrealists. There are no foreigners in art since art is a common language, a common utopia.

Stranger also evokes weirdness. Art is this moment in suspension, where the viewer, without necessarily wondering what the artist meant, just wants to feel and be open to a new idiom. A language without words. And without explanations, without instructions.

‘‘The history of the French scene makes me think of these uncompromising artists, without consensus, whose work and perseverance do not fail, despite the difficulty of integrating into an international art market, even if a shooting window seems to open.’’
