That’s a wrap for the first edition of the at the 77th Festival de Cannes! 🥽✨

This year, festival and market attendees had the exciting opportunity to explore 8 immersive works in competition and 6 non-competitive works within our expansive 1,300m² exhibition space at the Cineum Cannes.

🥽 Congratulations to Colored The Award Winner 🏆 of the first edition of the Compétition Immersive of the 77th edition of the Festival de Cannes & Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes at the Plage des Palmes!

🥽 🎥 Colored / Noire was presented to created by Tania de Montaigne, Stéphane Foenkinos & Pierre-Alain Giraud 🎥 🥽

The Compétition Immersive of Le Festival de Cannes recognizes the Best Immersive Works, and presents 8 in-competition virtual reality, augmented reality, video projection and holographic works.

The Jury, chaired by:
✨French filmmaker and screenwriter Marie Amachoukeli
✨French writer, director and producer Mathias Chelebourg
✨American producer, writer, and director Vassiliki Khonsari
✨Israeli filmmaker Uri Kranot
✨New Zealand and American filmmaker Raqi Syed

For its inaugural year, more than 3000 tickets were booked by Festival attendees to experience this new movement taking place at the 77th Festival de Cannes.

🥽 🎥 Each Work used a variety of technologies and techniques to pave the way for new methods of storytelling.

🎤“With the Immersive Competition, the Festival de Cannes is showcasing a new art form that draws in part on the heritage of cinema. This approach is in line with our desire to explore new stories and new experiences. This is not the first time the Festival de Cannes has exhibited an immersive work. In 2017, Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s Carne y Arena was presented in the Official Selection, and it was a great success. Today the medium is more mature and we’re once again pioneering our approach, offering immersive art pride of place at the Festival, with a selection of 8 works in competition and an awards ceremony hosted by an international jury,’

🎤 Panel: A New Art Form: Creating and Distributing Immersive Works (3pm- 50 min, 10 min Q&A)

🥽 The Compétition Immersive at the Festival de Cannes recognizes immersive works as an entirely new art form.

✨ However, each new medium draws on methods and techniques from its predecessor before evolving its distinct characteristics and narrative language.

✨ In this panel, we speak with individuals behind the works in the Immersive Competition to explore similarities and differences between filmmaking and immersive storytelling. We also learn about the speaker's backgrounds, why they are exploring immersive storytelling with emerging technology, the various tools they are using, the challenges they face, the unique affordances of immersive storytelling, and behind-the-scenes insights into the creative process.

✨ It’s also no secret that distribution is a major challenge for immersive works, just like cinema before a network and infrastructure were created to distribute and commercialise films in cinemas worldwide, giving birth to the film industry we know today. Now, immersive art forms are going through the same growing pains.

✨ During this session, we’ll dive deep into the challenges and opportunities to discover where we are on the timeline of maturity of the medium and what may come next, exploring the commercial intentions of the works, distribution examples, setup requirements and the pathway towards reaching the public eye.
