Here’s a sneaky shot from the last time I picked grapes! As you can tell, waking up early to harvest isn’t exactly my favorite activity 😅 But for winemakers, there’s no getting around it, and right now, they’re facing a tough season. In France, for example, right now, while they’re trying to harvest, it’s raining cats and dogs… a real disaster. The 2024 volume forecasts are looking pretty grim for most countries 😬 Here’s a quick look at the estimated European harvest volumes according to CEEV 📉
1️⃣ France 🇫🇷 : -18% 😱 France is experiencing one of its smallest harvests in decades, with major regions like Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne facing substantial losses due to mildew, frost, and hailstorms. Bordeaux has seen a 10% drop, and Champagne is expected to produce 16-19% less wine compared to 2023
2️⃣ Germany 🇩🇪 : -2%. In Germany, the decline is less dramatic but still notable, with mildew and heavy rain impacting production. Despite these challenges, certain regions like Mosel have maintained relatively stable volumes
3️⃣ Portugal 🇵🇹 : -8%. Portugal is dealing with production challenges, particularly in the Douro Valley, where drought and heatwaves have reduced yields
4️⃣ Spain 🇪🇸 : +20%!! Spain is one of the few countries to show positive signs in 2024, with a forecasted increase of 20% in production. Despite the previous year's drought and hailstorms, favorable conditions this year have led to a bumper harvest
5️⃣ Italy 🇮🇹 : up to -13% compared to the five-year average. Italy is facing challenges, particularly in regions like Tuscany and Piedmont, due to extreme weather events and persistent drought
The 2024 vintage will be one to watch, as winemakers across the globe navigate these unpredictable weather patterns and work tirelessly to produce wines 🙏🏼
➡️ Can’t wait to taste the 2024 vintage! Low yields don’t equal low quality ✨🍷
