Only days after the inauguration of a U.S. president who ironically is boasting about freedom of speech while attacking independent media and journalists, the fourth edition of the Sphera Media Lab provided a platform for exchange and connection. This initiative brought together in Brussels, a new generation of independent European media eager to collaborate and address contemporary challenges.

Organised by the European Lab platform as part of the Sphera Network, a consortium of independent publishers to produce videos, podcasts and newsletters for socially-engaged Europeans. For one day, over 40 speakers from across the continent and beyond (from Spain to Georgia, Afghanistan, Italy, Poland, and Hungary) gathered at LaVallée in Molenbeek (Brussels) to promote an alternative vision of journalism: collaborative, focused on young generations, and committed to the public interest.

Wherever far-right regimes come to power in Europe, their primary target is the media independence. Contexts such as in Slovakia, Hungary and Italy highlight the chronic fragility of independent and public service media ecosystems in such situations.

While the European Union is legislating on these issues, as seen with the adoption of the Media Freedom Act, is it already too late? How are independent media impacted by these regimes coming to power? And how are they fighting against these trends? And what roles can European networks like Sphera or Reset! play in response to these dynamics?

The last presidential campaign in the United States highlighted this dynamic: the world of podcasts became a battleground for influence. Donald Trump, for instance, appeared on nine different podcasts in October alone. Joe Rogan, Tucker Carlson, Theo Von, Andrew Schulz, Lex Fridman… These are just a few of the dozens of individuals who have launched their own podcast platforms, positioning themselves as alternative or ‘anti-media’ outlets, always eager to attack progressive values and ideas. In Europe, how has this ecosystem evolved? From Europod to PRISA Media, along with numerous independent studios, the podcasting sector appears to serve as a platform for causes such as feminism, digital ethics, anti-racism, and environmentalism—positions diametrically opposed to those promoted by the podcasts that contributed to the U.S. president’s victory. This raises questions about their impact and their ability to shape a European public sphere that defends the common good rather than undermining its principles.

In just about two weeks, 𝗦𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝗯 is taking over in Brussels, for one-day event to celebrate independent media and their impact. Organised as part of the , this event will bring together media actors from across Europe.

Join us for a day of 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘀, 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀, 𝗮 𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 to help media professionals to strengthen their impact.

A 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗱𝗷-𝘀𝗲𝘁, to further the connections made during the event, will end the day.

🎙️ À Lyon, du 17 au 19 mai pendant Nuits sonores Lab, 4 d'entre elles investissent le plateau radio de l’événement : 20ft Radio, Mutant Radio, Radio Béguin et Refuge Worldwide.

👉 Au programme : interviews d’artistes, conférences-écoute et discussion autour des enjeux qui traversent les scènes artistiques contemporaines.

📢 Arty Farty, l'organisation à l'initiative d’European Lab, est membre du consortium de The Circle, un projet de coopération qui vise à consolider des communautés émergentes de créateurs et créatrices de contenus dans 8 villes européennes et créer des collaborations transfrontalières.

👉 Du 3 au 14 avril 2023, The Circle investit Lyon et se met à la recherche de professionnels des médias, créatifs et entrepreneurs pour prendre part à son Design Sprint.
Les participants bénéficieront ensuite d'une formation, d'une bourse d'un maximum de 10 000€ pour mettre en oeuvre leur projet de hub média, ainsi que d'un mentorat assuré par Are We Europe , n-ost, Hostwriter et Arty Farty.

📢 Arty Farty, the organization powering European Lab, is taking part in the consortium of The Circle Hubs, a European cooperation taking on a new approach to cross-boarder journalism and cooperation. The projet is organizing 8 design sprints and setting up media hubs in 8 European cities.

👉 In April 2023, The Circle is coming to Lyon and we are looking for media professionals, creatives and entrepreneurs to join the Design Sprint which will take place between 3-14 April 2023.
