Maegandang | A Take Away Show at #WOMEX24
🇰🇷 Watch now Maegandang's Take Away Show captured by Vincent Moon. Last of a series of six exclusive live performances at WOMEX in Manchester: bit.ly/Maegandang_Blogotheque
'We close this series of six films at Womex with a shooting that took place precisely as its doors closed. We follow the Maegandang trio through the maze of market stalls already in the process of dismantling, and set them up tightly packed in Manchester Central's impressive back room. Now it's time for the harmonic meanderings of their venerable gayageum, that languid Korean cousin of the cithar. In a fraction of a second, the music that emanates seems to remind us of several important things: the strength of collaborations lies in knowing how to play complementary and differentiated melodies; it's necessarily interesting to explore the breadth of tuning possibilities; rhythmic breaks always create lovely surprises; and, as Baudelaire said, “the beautiful is always bizarre”.' - Julie Henoch

'We had seen him the day before, trying to raise energies during an impressive concert that scented with subtle perfumes one of the convention hall-type venues hosting WOMEX 24. A little further down the road, however, was a completely different venue, more suited to the spiritual ardor of Haitian Erol Josué: the Albert Hall, a former church that became the rock'n'roll temple of the once youthful Beatles or Rolling Stones, and since then, of Manchester's wildest musical flights. On this autumn afternoon, through its stained-glass windows and creaky parquet balconies, all these memories met the voodoo spirits he always invoke, who were well and truly at the rendezvous.' Votia | A Take Away Show
🇷🇪 Watch now Votia's Take Away Show captured by Vincent Moon. Fourth of a series of six exclusive live performances at WOMEX in Manchester: bit.ly/Votia_Blogotheque
'To begin this film, Vincent Moon focuses his attention on a dazzling light just breaking between two imposing monuments. Wouldn't this intuitively be the best way to introduce Votia, a sun-woman, a volcano of a woman, now shining between her late father, the immense Gramoun Lélé, and the tradition of Maloya, the survival music of slaves from Africa, born hidden in the cane fields of the - still French - island of Réunion? Her energy is as condensed as her native rock in the middle of the ocean? Here, as there, rhythmic pitons and a real furnace roar serenely to warm bodies and convey the invincible beauty of Creole culture.' - Julie Henoch
Madalitso Band | A Take Away Show at #WOMEX24

'A small family park in Manchester, at dusk, between railroad tracks, a deserted playground and a fading ice-cream truck, just like that, in the middle of an alley, the faraway sounds of the Madalitso Band duo. For there's a touch of childhood sublimated in these strange homemade instruments from Malawi, as much as in the candid, profound gazes of the two musicians Josefe and Yobu. From the streets of Lilongwe, where they played for ten years before being spotted and broadcast around the world by the equally grown-up children of the Bongo Joe label, here swirls the echo of a simple joy, finely sophisticated and truly moving.' ‘You have to look carefully to find these little canals that weave their way between blocks of buildings and small red-brick houses. The banks of these canals offer some bucolic, ever-changing spaces far from the hustle and bustle of the city, just like the melodies sung by these Chechen women of all ages from Georgia's Pankisi valley in the midst of this year's quite thunderous WOMEX’s program. It was freezing cold - or a “wild goose cold” should we say, inspired by the two beautiful creatures who followed, like us - and must have been touched to the heart by - the beauty of these legendary Caucasian love songs.’ - Julie Henoch

'This pub on the corner - right next to the central venue of WOMEX 24 - caught our attention straight away. It had a special aura, something old on a backdrop of new buildings. We went in to see if we could shoot there a film with the Occitan octet Barrut. Allan, one of the owners, said « of course » with a very sympathetic English phlegm before really understanding what we wanted to do. And we ourselves understand a little later that The Britain's Protection was a place that had become emblematic of the important working-class city that was Manchester. In August 1819, its walls had housed and protected several hundred protesters during the Peterloo Massacre. In October 2024, it was only natural that the modernity of these libertarian voices and drums should resonate there.' - @juliehenoch

Sílvia Pérez Cruz & Juan Falú - Oración del Remanso | A Take Away Show
🤍 The first meeting between Silvia Perez Cruz, a great voice of Spanish popular music, and Juan Falú, a reference in Argentine folklore, took place directly on stage, without prior introductions or rehearsals. Since then, this musical conversation has continued, culminating in the release of an album entitled Lentamente, a recital in a stripped-down duo of voice and guitar. When they visited Paris, before the very first concert around the record, the appointment was made at Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, one of the city's oldest churches. Their interpretation of Jorge Fandermole's ‘Oracion del Remanso’ gave rise to a sublime communion between Silvia's voice and Juan's strings, a blend of poem and prayer that echoed off the old stones.
