Our story
Bar Studio Aix was a dream that started in 2005, when Christopher Meraz-Mata bought his first 4-track digital recording machine and a single condenser microphone to make a personal recording. Encouraged by early results, he set out to expand both skill set and hardware, always with an insatiable appetite for making better recordings.
In 2017, the opportunity of a lifetime came along. While living in the south of France, he heard that Al Schmitt (the only recording engineer in history to earn 23 Grammy Awards and a Hollywood Star) was giving a one-week Master Class in a nearby studio - and that the guest recording artist would be Melody Gardot! Christopher immediately reserved a place as a student, which would precipitate a close relationship with Al Schmitt and Steve Genewisck, as well as with other great engineers from around the globe. He has gone back to that Master Class every year since.
Three years were spent researching, testing, studying, practicing, constructing, and preparing for the opening of his own studio. Some subjects of study were directly tied to sound engineering: music theory, musical arrangement, mixing techniques, mastering workflows, electrical engineering and troubleshooting, and of course Pro Tools operation (the manual is over 1,500 pages long). Other subjects of study were less directly tied to sound engineering, but would be equally important for running a successful studio: piano servicing and tuning, music publishing and promotion, digital signal processing theory, recording studio design, digital effects theory, computer assembly and maintenance, web design and marketing, and learning customer relationship management software.
The studio has grown from a personal operation to a fully professional setup, with all the simultaneous inputs one could wish for, capacity to send different headphone mixes to 16 individual musicians, and speedy workflows for recording, mixing, and mastering. After all the time and money spent, and after all the blood, sweat, and tears (believe me, there was a lot of sweat) - Bar Studio Aix is open for business!
