SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT TO FIGHT WATER CRISIS

Did you know that only 3% of total water resources are freshwater and that water global demand could surge by 20 to 30% by 2050? That's a serious wake-up call for sustainable water management!

🌡️Global temperatures reached exceptionally high levels in 2023: last year has been confirmed as the warmest calendar year going back to 1850 (Copernicus, 2023).

🚰Freshwater availability per person is shrinking worldwide due to population growth and droughts: 52 million people in EU already face water scarcity, and in a 2°C global warming scenario, that number could skyrocket to 60 million by 2040 (JRC,2023).

🍽️Climate change isn't just impacting water availability, it's threatening global food security too: with population booming agriculture will need to produce 50% more by 2050, with irrigated agriculture covering 20% of land but producing 40% of our food (FAO 2021, UN 2021).

🧪Pollution from nutrients and pesticides is impacting a large part of Europe's water bodies: 22% of its surface water bodies and 28% of its groundwater are significantly affected by agricultural pollution (EEA, 2021).

💰There is the need for improved water management to mitigate all these negative impacts. If not addressed, such strain could cost some regions up to 6% of their GDP by 2050 (WB, 2016).

🇫🇷 RESERVOIR DE BIODIVERSITE, ECONOMIES D’EAU ET D’INTRANTS : QUAND LE GOLF DEVIENT VERTUEUX
Consommation excessive d’eau, utilisation intensive de produits sanitaires pour avoir une pelouse impeccable quelques soient le climat ou la saison, les golfs ont été pendant très longtemps accusés d’être le mauvais élève de l’écologie. Le sujet fait encore polémique et le Golf a du mal à se défaire de sa mauvaise image. Mais depuis une quinzaine d’années, les différents acteurs dont la Fédération française de Golf multiplient les initiatives pour rendre les terrains vertueux, et les résultats sont là. Certains sont devenus de véritables réservoirs de biodiversité, et en zone urbaine ou périurbaine, les parcours jouent un véritable rôle de poumon vert.

However, over the last fifteen years, the different players, including the French Golf Association, have stepped up their efforts to make the courses more acceptable and the results are clear. Laurent Deyres et son frère Didier ont une exploitation agricole de 800 hectares au Porge (Gironde), en France, avec 95 % de surface irriguée par pivot et rampes frontales. Dans cette région, l’eau très ferrugineuse, corrode les travées des pivots et bouche les asperseurs. Laurent Deyres a développé une invention qui permet de résoudre ce problème et en facilite l'entretien.

En horticulture, optimiser l’utilisation de l’eau et le rendement est un défi auquel les producteurs sont confrontés chaque saison. Colloque à Aix-en-Provence : La place de l’ACV dans la gestion de l’eau et l’aménagement du territoire, Un outil essentiel dans la transition écologique

Dans le contexte de la planification de la transition écologique en France, l’AFEID, la SCP, la Chaire ELSA-PACT et l’INRAE ont organisé le mardi 3 octobre au Tholonet (au siège de la SCP) près d’Aix-en-Provence, le premier colloque en France consacré à « la place de l’Analyse du Cycle de Vie (ACV) dans la gestion de l’eau et l’aménagement du territoire ». Ce colloque a réuni les acteurs clés des domaines scientifiques, techniques, institutionnels et politiques pour échanger sur ce sujet crucial de transition.

Sanary-sur-mer : a mediteranean roof garden

Sanary-sur-Mer (83) has undertaken the redevelopment of its port, including a new harbour-master’s office. The client’s ambition was to ensure that this building was covered with vegetation so that the pedestrians and surrounding homes have a view of the roofs of the building.

Sanary-sur-mer : un jardin méditerranéen en toiture

Sanary-sur-Mer (83) a mis en œuvre un réaménagement de son port, incluant une nouvelle capitainerie. La volonté du maître d’ouvrage était de disposer d’une végétalisation de ce bâtiment car les piétons et les habitations environnantes donnent sur les toitures du bâtiment. La ville de Sanary est également très attentive à son fleurissement, délicat compte tenu du climat méditerranéen, de la proximité de la mer et du support-toiture.

Le riz : une nouvelle étape pour l'irrigation goutte-à-goutte

Au cours de la campagne agricole 2021, dans le monde, 165,25 millions d'hec­tares de riz ont été plantés, et presque toutes ces terres sont inondées.
Bien que la plantation en rizières soit une méthode de culture tradi­tionnelle, elle présente d’impor­tants incon­vénients, des conditions de croissance non-optimales et une pollution par émissions de gaz à effet de serre.

In 2021 season, there were around 165.25 million hectares of rice being grown worldwide, and almost all of that land is constantly being flooded.
Although rice paddies represent a traditional method of cultivation, it is not perfect and has significant drawbacks. These range from suboptimal growing conditions and pollution to greenhouse gas emissions.
