She is no ordinary KLM flight attendant. This is none other than the airline CEO herself, Marjan Rintel. Spotted serving passengers aboard a flight from Los Angeles to Amsterdam, this hands-on leader is in her inaugural year as the CEO. Passenger David Elliot chanced upon her during the flight and shared her picture in the Facebook Group "Flying Blue Platinum."

Indeed, it's not an unusual sight to see airline CEOs and Presidents swapping their corporate suits for operational roles. Ricky Isla, AirAsia Philippines CEO, once experienced the work of a ramp agent. Similarly, Philippine Airlines President Capt. Stanley Ng donned his pilot 4-bar epaulets for a commercial flight from Manila to Perth, marking the airline's inaugural flight to that city.

This kind of initiative allows airline executives to feel the heartbeat of their organization - from customers to passengers to employees. It empowers them to make informed decisions about service improvements and enhancing the workplace environment.

RIP Tina Turner

RIP Tina Turner

How do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world? Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like. Her final words to me - for me - were "You never mimicked me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world." I shall hold these words close to my heart for the rest of my days. I am honored to have known Tina Turner. I am humbled to have helped show her to the world. So on today, while we mourn the loss of this iconic voice and presence, she gave us more than we could have ever asked. She gave us her whole self. And Tina Turner is a gift that that will always be "simply the best." Angels sing thee to thy rest…Queen.

Sacrifices are a necessity to grow your business but they aren’t necessarily a “bad” thing🤓

When you start a small business there are many sacrifices you have to make. Some people are more disciplined then the rest of us. They list their sacrifices, set the rules, and they follow them religiously. For many of us, let’s just say we learn on the job.🤓

As you manage your own business, you will learn to make sacrifices for survival and growth. Even the simplest of things like you can’t entertain friends and family at your home if you’re using your home as your business office.

You sacrifice things like holidays, and eating out or treating yourself etc so you can put $ into growing your business. You swap comfort for make do so you save. You cut back on personal time so you could invest time in your business.

For me, its the use of our family home and family space. At some point we will get it back but right now it’s our headquarters, it’s our base, it’s my office, our sewing room, admin, storage and workshop. It’s where I spend many of my hours with 30 other people, where all things creative are made. ☺️

For the last eight and a half years, and four houses we’ve lived in, they have all been used as work spaces to grow the business.

Today, as I played host to bank officers, I can’t help but noticed how “normal” this setting has become for me, and even the family.

“Please take a seat, I waved my guests to the chairs at the dinning table.
“Can I get you guys anything to drink?
“Water, tea, coffee,” I offered as I turned on the jug in the kitchen, and called aunty Rachael to help with our guests.
I grabbed my tea from my desk and joined them at the dinning table. An opened packet of the dark chocolate next to my cup, my daughter’s sketch pad moved away and the place mats replaced with my note pad and we got on with our meeting.

Each morning when the family leave for work and school, the aunties come in to help me clean, spray, water the plants, turn on lights, aircons or fans and open the doors. Then the office guys come in, if we have meetings, it’s at the kitchen table. Through out the day, the whole place has movement and activities as we plan, work, sew, sell to customers and meet clients. Its a full on business operation between 8am and 5pm.

Each afternoon, the aunties help tidy up, sweep and clean, even the downstairs, things are put back in their places, and the premises all neat and tidy for the family. Kids get back, they make something to eat and go to their rooms to do home work. They don’t watch TV until after 5 when everyone has left.🙏🏻

As our meeting ended, and I’ve walked the guests outside, I realized that the sacrifice of giving up our family home for business had not only saved us on renting office space but it also forced us to be disciplined and to plan our lives around that routine. You always have to sacrifice something when you want something.

If you’re making sacrifices today, and you feel like it’s too much or you’re tempted to throw in the towel, hope this helps to keep you on. Things do not happen overnight, that’s for sure! We are nearing 9 years of sacrificing our home space to run a business. But they say if you want something you've never had, you must be willing to do something you've never done. ✅
