Nothing like digging 200 dalo pits for lunch ππͺ #fijifarms #organicfarming #farmtotable

Hi my name is Siu. Pronounced C-yu, not "see you" or "sui" π.
I am Tongan and have been living here in Fiji for most of my adult life. I studied and worked at USP, Laucala campus. And I'm now married and have a 3 year old son living the stay at home mum and farm life.
I started this page in March 2023 to document and share our farming journey. My husband, Moji and I have never farmed in our lives π We learn as we go.
When we started, our main goal was to grow our own food organically and to share or sell any excess. We wanted to grow food that is safe to consume and to look after our soil and surrounding environment. We do not use any synthetic weedicides or pesticides. We use various planting methods to deter pests naturally. We weed around our crops manually with a hoe.
It has been a very challenging yet rewarding journey. My 3 year old can name plants, insects and is learning colours, shapes, sounds while we're on the farm. It isn't always easy to take our son, because we all know what Suva weather is like. Sometimes, he gets annoyed with all the mosquitoes. Sometimes it's too hot. Sometimes he is asleep and we have to carry him. Sometimes we have to leave early without finishing what we intended to do because he is tired. No matter what, I taking him out into the farm, playing with the soil, growing trees and swimming in the nearby river is better than being couped up in the city.
Many times, I keep thinking that I wasted years going to university. I have two Master degrees by the way, and nothing to do with farming or agriculture π But every skill, theory and information learned in the classroom is applicable. I've also been thinking that I should have done this ages ago when I was young and fit. I'm now approaching 40 and I feel like all the pole dancing at O'rileys back then has damaged my poor body π Farming has become a real challenge because bending down to pull the weeds hurts my back, my neck, my arm oileiiii churangaaπ
Anyways,
