WHY, MY HUSBAND? Wife of Dead Inmate Asks

Siteri Verevakalau watches helplessly as her two young children hold a portrait of their late father, Mosese Talemainaivalu.

Mr Talemainaivalu who was an inmate at Korovou Corrections Centre died on March 25.

Cause of death? Alleged assault as issued in a statement by Chief of Intelligence, Investigations and Prosecutions Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sakeo Raikaci yesterday.

To this, Ms Verevakalau wants answers.

She wants Police to find those involved in the alleged assault and bring them to justice.

She only heard of her husband’s demise when Fiji Corrections Service personnel visited her at their home in Nakasi to tell the news on the day he died.

β€œWe were never told that he was sick and the only time the corrections officers visited us was to inform us that he had died,” Ms Verevakalau said.

β€œWhy him? What happened?

β€œThe inmates are the only ones telling us what really happened inside. It is so unfair that my children have lost their father at a very young age.

β€œMy husband was a good man. He was hardworking and always prioritized his children.

β€œMy husband ended up with the wrong crowd and that was why he was incarcerated but that did not give anyone any right to take his life.”

Ms Verevakalau said it was hard to explain to her children that their father would not be seeing them anymore.

β€œMy eldest daughter, who is eight years old, is affected the most. She would wake up and ask her grandmother if her dad was coming back.

β€œIt is sad that my husband was taken away from them at an early age,” she said.

β€œMy children need answers and right now we need as much information as we can get.

Mr Talemainaivalu was 29 years old.

Police And Corrections Comment:

ACP Raikaci said the Criminal Investigations Department said the victim was admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital on March 23 after he was allegedly assaulted by Corrections personnel.

ACP Raikaci said the victim passed away a few days later, and the matter was reported earlier this week.

Fiji Corrections Service spokesperson, Jone Kalouniviti, said there was an internal investigation in regards to the allegations.

β€œWe would like to assure tht zero-tolerance for assault on prisoners stand,” he said.

β€œTheir welfare is our main priority.” Mr Talemainaivalu will be laid to rest today at the Nasinu Cemetery.

GIRL'S WAIT FOR DAD ENDS IN TEARS
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Shreedhi Riya Singh, 12, eagerly waited for her father in Nausori on Saturday, but instead received news of his involvement in a devastating accident.

Her father, Ravendra Singh, was a bus driver from Barotu, Ra.

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said Mr Singh was alleged to be the country’s latest road fatality victim following a motor vehicle accident near Teidamu Hill in Lautoka on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Singh, 53, was believed to be a bus driver and lived alone at his home in Barotu.

His daughter, Shreedhi, was brought up by Mr Singh’s younger sister, Suneeta Devi, who lives in Nausori.

Shreedhi said the last time she spoke with her father was last Thursday.

β€œWe were shocked when we heard the news,” she said.

β€œMy father always told me that one day we will live together despite my mother having left us.

β€œI used to visit my father every school break, but from now it will be different because my dad is no more. I miss him,” she said tearfully.

His sister, Ms Devi, said her brother was a kind-hearted person and usually got along with the villagers in Ra.

Police

Ms Naisoro said the victim’s vehicle was hit by a vehicle allegedly driven by a 26-year-old tertiary student.

β€œThe suspect, while driving towards Lautoka, allegedly failed to negotiate a bend,” she said.

She added that due to the impact of the collision, the victim’s vehicle hit another vehicle driven by a 39-year-old man from Batiiri in Sigatoka who was travelling with his family.

Police and National Fire Authority (NFA) personnel retrieved the victim’s body from the vehicle where he was rushed to the Lautoka Hospital, but was unfortunately pronounced dead.

The 39-year-old’s family, including two young children sustained minor injuries..

The suspect and his three passengers’ sustained injuries and are all admitted at the Lautoka Hospital.

Ms Naisoro added that investigations would continue.

Meanwhile, the road death toll currently stands at 19 compared to four for the same period last year.

Double Tragedy for Family
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●|||
Kolinio Nuve said his niece, Talica Nakasa, was attending a funeral at Malabe Village, Wainibuka, Tailevu last Friday, with her family when a road accident claimed her life near Dakuivuna Village along the Kings Road.

Mr Nuve said his niece was on the front seat of a vehicle that was driven by her father, while her fouryear-old daughter sat in the backseat with her niece and Ms Nakasa’s sister.

β€œThe accident happened about 2pm last Friday. We were at Malabe attending a funeral and they (Ms Nakasa and her family) were travelling to Korovou when the accident happened.

They were hit by a big truck that went off the road. Her father tried to avoid it, but it was too late,” he said.

β€œIt’s not easy for us to accept this because we were at one funeral when we received news of their accident.

We were all shocked. The father has been discharged while the three others remain admitted.”

Ms Nakasa’s husband who works in Australia had arranged for her and her daughter to join him this month.

He said discussions had been made for Ms Nakasa to be buried at Burenitu Village in Ra this Saturday.

Ms Nakasa is survived by her husband and four-year-old daughter.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident.

β€œThe victim’s father, sister and four-year-old daughter sustained serious injuries and all are admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The suspect will be questioned soon.”

The road death toll stands at 18 compared to three for the same period last year.

Two young men who stole two 4.5 litre containers ice-cream and $157 cash from a woman in Sigatoka last year were handed suspended sentences by the High Court in Lautoka.

Justice Riyaz Hamza said Navitalai Ratulevu and Savenaca Baleiwai were both young offenders.

β€œYou have been of previous good character,” he said in his January 30 ruling.

β€œYou both have fully cooperated with the police in this matter and you have accepted responsibility for your conduct.

β€œYou have submitted that you are truly remorseful of your actions and promised not to re-offend. ”

Your parents have fully compensated the complainant for the loss suffered by her and also apologised for your conduct.

β€œYou both entered a guilty plea at the first given opportunity during these proceedings.”

Justice Hamza sentenced both to two years imprisonment, and suspended it for a period of five years.
