Heaven-Gemini: Luonnonoikku (2024) - mini-review

Finnish band Heaven-Gemini are out with the album "Luonnonoikku", and progressive metal is the style explored by this band. It is an accessible yet also quirky venture into the progressive metal universe we get here. While the songs aren't the most complex in structure, there is a bit of a quirky and off kilter character to these creations nonetheless. Some passages and instrument details that sound a bit technical, some movements that for some reason or other remind me of Norwegian bands Virus and Major Parkinson, alongside a liberal array of different expressions used throughout this whole affair. Brief thrash metal flirts are a part of the package here, but that is also the case with sections that have a bit more of an alternative vibe to them. Booming sections of impact riffs and impact rhythms alternate with melodic, flowing and elegant excursions. There's power here, melody, and some subtle and some more overt features in the quirky category. The vocals match the variety of the music, with clean and melodic as well as clean and raspy vocals coexisting nicely with occasional aggro vocals and more deep set distorted vocals with a bit of a growl attitude and ex*****on to boot. Contemporary, quirky but also accessible progressive metal is how I'd summarize this one, and those who find such a description fascinating might want to have a listen to this one.
