Finnish heavy rock band Ängry Gentlemen released "Red Tight Skirt" single which is a love song that speaks of that moment when you see something so beautiful but unattainable. The story of the song describes that moment when the world stops, the body freezes, and no sensible words come out of the mouth anymore. To top it off, the mind starts imagining all the things one could do with a new crush, but reality hits later on.

No matter how far rock music progresses, evolves or adapts, the demand for nostalgia never seems to dwindle. At a reliant frequency, we see new bands pledge their loyalty to classic rock approaches that still maintain a sense of longevity and timelessness today. One such act is Finland’s latest prog rock sensations, Kick the Giant, who are finally ready to release their debut album after a decade of endless work across the independent scene. Citing Toto and Dream Theater as inspiration, this promises to be an engaging record.

Retro keyboard tones accompanied by spirited guitar play introduce the album and title-track simultaneously. A riveting and uplifting chorus line establishes an inviting atmosphere, while the progressive guitar structures fully embrace the Dream Theater influences. Some of the vocal delivery lacks experimentation, but this is a minor note on an otherwise enjoyable opener. Journey vibes emanate from the attention-stealing ‘Statement’, personifying the album’s core classic rock values. Adding to this is the clear technical prowess of Kick the Giant, highlighted by the intricate and dazzling delivery of this brilliant song.

The single, ‘Out of Time’, marks the album’s strongest stand yet, elevated by the gripping keyboard-guided tempo. Subtle shades of Kansas add some flair to the performance, but pale in comparison to the vocal’s distinct and crucial edge. The trip through nostalgic rock continues into ‘Overture’, prioritising pace and mood more than its counterparts. Bridging the gap between 80s and 90s prog rock, this impressive instrumental number whirls through several looping and intertwining tones, making for a familiar yet unique final product.

Tweaking the formula slightly, ‘Damned or Divine’ adopts a retro space voyager sound akin to The Night Flight Orchestra. An emphasis on instrumental ex*****on is again evident, but the spotlight is on the effortlessly captivating vocals. Maintaining the comparatively composed tempo is ‘Stop Signs’. Hinged by a late album feel, ‘Stop Signs’ fulfils its role on the record admirably, while the elaborate guitar provokes more respect from the listener.

Appearing penultimately is the longest song present, ‘Distant Memories’, using its lengthy duration to truly channel the Dream Theater spirit. Vocal experimentation widens the scope of the performance, but the initially slowed pace leaves you awaiting the essential progression. The newfound sense of composure soaks into ‘Mountain of Nothing’, endorsing some slight power ballad tendencies while staying loyal to the album’s classic rock focus. Although this isn’t the most memorable addition, it remains an encouraging performance and worthwhile finale.

Overall, this is a brilliant album that any classic rock fan will be hard pressed to dislike. Kick the Giant have delivered on all fronts with this record, while their skill and maturity almost makes you forget that this is still only their debut album.
