The summer holidays are here, and finally, you are free to enjoy. Unfortunately, many people pack their holidays so full of activities or work that there’s not enough time to relax and recharge their batteries. But the ultimate purpose here is specifically to relax and recharge your batteries.

After the summer holidays, 11 months of hard work will follow. Unfortunately, words like exhaustion and burnout touch so many people these days. I suppose there are many reasons for burnout, typically too much work and too much stress, but I would say that we are one of the main reasons because it is we who make these decisions.

Whatever the reason, we should try to leave the situation, or even our workplace, if necessary, before it is too late. Otherwise, if we, again and again, find ourselves in a situation where we have to choose between work or our family, work or our friends, work or our health, work or our happiness, and if we always choose work, we may one by one loose the other things mentioned, and then finally even our work, when we have become so ill that it is no longer possible to work.

In this article, I reflect on why so many people find it difficult to manage their work-life balance and what might help

✨The impact of the operational environment for a successful career/job change ✨

In my article, I want to point out how important it is to pay attention to the impact of having the right operational environment when in a career/job change process.

Career planning, career change and job search are always challenging. In a career change situation, you think about why you want to change jobs, your professional expertise and potential, and what you want to do next. You then fine-tune your cover letter and CV, develop, and polish your “story” and interview questions, and check for interesting jobs to appear on your radar. In a situation like this, one tries to present oneself favourably. However, if you focus too much on just saying, “What an excellent candidate I am”, and if your interest is focused only on the target position, there is a risk that you may overlook the rest of the company’s operational environment.

In my work as a Headhunter, I met several business leaders who, when entering their new job, sowed the seeds of failure by entering the wrong operational environment, which they should have understood in advance not to do. The higher you want to go in the organisation, the more important a good understanding of the operational environment becomes for a successful job change. The less attention you pay to this issue, the greater the risk of accidentally getting into a company or job where you don’t feel comfortable or can’t cope.

In working life, artificial intelligence has been used for a long time. Nowadays, artificial intelligence like ChatGPT (and similar applications) is being made available to everyone and is starting to take its share of our daily time. AI is also increasingly integrated into various everyday applications and devices, e.g. the Internet and mobile phones.

The potential benefits of using artificial intelligence are staggering. Still, it also has a huge risk potential, like when used for various criminal scams & manipulations using fake information/news, all the way up to various doomsday scenarios.

AI may indeed become one of our success factors in working life, but it also has the potential to stop us from succeeding, depending on how we use it. With the limited perspective I have from my own little bubble I live in, I have paid attention to three risk factors related to the use of artificial intelligence that, in my mind, can have a significant impact on what happens, that is:

💫 How easily people outsource their independent thinking and problem-solving to AI.

💫 How easily people perceive AI’s answers as absolute truth when they are not.

💫 How easily people present AI outputs as their thoughts without realizing that this can involve significant risks, even at the company level.

Thinking, “I am so smart; this does not concern me”, does not make anyone immune to these risks.

🔥 Uusi vuosi – uudet haasteet 🔥

Uuden vuoden myötä kenties myös uuden työpaikan haku käy mielessä. Asiaa ei pidä tehdä liian vaikeaksi ja stressaavaksi, m***a pitää tietää miksi halua vaihtaa ja minkälaiseen firmaan ja työhön seuraavaksi haluaa. On myös hyvä muistaa, että työnhaku voi kestää paljon kauemmin kuin mitä oli ajatellut. Tämän myötä sitä voi alkaa pohtimaan, onko minussa kenties jotakin pielessä, kun näin käy. Useimmiten mikään ei ole pielessä, muita hakijoita vaan on niin paljon. Ei ole harvinaista, että samaa positiota hakee parisataa muutakin henkilöä.

Kun ei-vastauksia alkaa kertyä postilaatikkoon, mieltä voi rauhoittaa, kun itse tietää, että on tehnyt parhaansa ja on hakuprosesseissa tehnyt asiat oikein. Tämä myös antaa voimia painaa loppuun asti, kunnes uusi työpaikka on löytynyt.

Alla yksinkertainen mallipohja, jossa jokainen laatikko (myös otsikkolaatikot) pitää sisällään asioita, joita on hyvä käydä mielessään läpi omassa hakuprosessissa. Mallipohjassa asiat näkyvät vain otsikkotasolla, (jokaisesta ”laatikosta” voisi puhua paljonkin) m***a aiheet ovat aika itsestään selviä, joten ehkä mallipohja voi näinkin toimia hyödyllisenä muistilistana jollekin työnhakijalle.
