The EU Parliament has been calling for even more ambitious and binding climate targets for both the EU and the rest of the world. In February, MEPs called for a 40% cut in CO2 emissions from 1990 levels, a 30% target for renewable energy and a 40% target for energy efficiency by 2030. They have also consistently called on the EU to show greater ambition in the talks for the new global climate change treaty that is expected to be adopted by the Paris Climate Conference in December 2015.

A degraded environment can have a negative impact on sport, the Olympic Games and, most importantly, on the athletes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Movement at large consider environmental responsibility as an integral part of Olympism, along with sport and culture, and work to acknowledge and encourage the implementation of good environmental practices in the field of sport.

Today marks World Environment Day (WED) 2014, under the theme of “Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) and Climate Change”. This Day, initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), provides an opportunity to highlight how sport and the environment are deeply interlinked, and to illu…

A participatory forest management (PFM) program in Ethiopia has made good on forest preservation and expansion. After 15 years, the program has aided one community in expanding its forest by 9.2 percent in the last decade, while still allowing community access to forest for small scale logging in Ethiopia's Bale Mountains.

Ethiopia has some 6,603 species of plants, 839 birds, 205 mammals, 288 reptiles, and 76 amphibians. Let's protect them protecting the environment they live in.

05/06/2014

Between 1990 and 2005, Ethiopia lost 14 percent of its forest cover or 2.1 million hectares. Deforestation rates have increased by 10.4 percent since the close of the 1990s.

05/06/2014

Ethiopia loses about 141,000 hectares of natural forest each year due to firewood collection, conversion to farmland, overgrazing, and use of forest wood for building material. Ethiopia faces a difficult future, because the agricultural sector, which forms the backbone of the economy, is totally dependent on forest resources.

05/06/2014

"The main causes depleting natural forests in Ethiopia are attributed to agricultural encroachments in the forests and overgrazing with detrimental effects on natural regeneration. It is alarming to observe unsustainable human activities in forest lands, which leads to not only deforestation, but also forest degradation." Forest Network in Ethiopoia

Fortune, the largest English weekly, published an interesting editorial that related with the ongoing debate on Abbay (Blue Nile) River. The paper argued that “refocusing the Nile debate on the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation could change the whole debate.”

“Considering the magnitude of the challenge climate change and environmental degradation pose to the very waters of the Nile, one could expect for governments of the riparian nations to factor it in their discussions,” Fortune wrote. “But it remains to be marginalised in all the ongoing rhetoric. By and large, the debate seems to assume that the waters of the river are going to stay intact, regardless of the natural and anthropogenic factors.”

Join millions of people across the world, who will switch lights off for an hour on 29 March at 8:30 pm, to raise awareness for the planet. The worldwide grassroots movement, which is organised by WWF & famously known as "Earth Hour", was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide, and the one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement.

Earth Hour 2013 took place in more than 7001 cities and towns in 154 countries and territories across all seven continents. Hundreds of millions of people switched their lights off for an hour, and the campaign experienced its biggest growth since 2009. There were around 3395 landmarks that participated.
