In this summer season, many people take advantage of their vacation period to volunteer both in their local communities and in faraway places. Personally, I have participated in three international volunteer programs: two in South Africa in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and another in Granma, Cuba. These experiences have profoundly marked my personal and professional life.
Currently, at the Coachability Foundation, we work with volunteers both at the origin and destination, and I want to take this opportunity to express our immense gratitude for their invaluable work. When I ask them about their reasons for becoming volunteers, the responses are varied; while some are not directly linked to altruism, most are motivated by the desire to contribute to the common good or to apply their knowledge and enthusiasm to our projects.
Beyond these insights, we wanted to delve deeper into what volunteering offers on a neuronal, social, and spiritual level. Altruistic behavior, such as volunteering and helping others, triggers a cascade of neurochemical responses in the brain that profoundly enhance well-being. When we engage in acts of kindness, the brain releases dopamine, the "pleasure molecule," which reinforces these behaviors and creates a sense of reward and satisfaction. This not only boosts our mood but also motivates us to continue altruistic actions, fostering a cycle of positivity. Moreover, altruism stimulates the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the "bonding hormone," which promotes empathy, trust, and social connection. This neural mechanism strengthens community bonds and contributes to a more cohesive society, countering individualistic behaviors that prioritize self-interest over collective well-being.
