LANZAROTE NEWS HEADLINES FOR FRIDAY 13.09.24

The Cabildo of Lanzarote announced yesterday that it has formalized 35.5 million euros , for a period of 7 years, with the aim of improving and expanding the services intended for dependent and vulnerable people in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, through non-profit social initiative entities. During the press conference The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted that “this action marks a milestone in the social policy of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, allowing us to guarantee the continuity and improvement of care through social entities that have been carrying out extraordinary work with the Third Sector for decades.

The Canary Islands airports registered 4.5 million passengers in the month of August, thats 9.5% more than last year with Lanzarote only 3,000 short of 800.000 passengers. Lanzarotes figures recorded are more than ever before in its history and it's also a 5.3% increase on the same month last year.

Sir Alex Ellis has arrived in Madrid, where he takes over from Hugh Elliott in the service of His Majesty King Charles III as the British Ambassador to Spain and Non-Resident Ambassador to Andorra. Alex Ellis will present his credentials to His Majesty King Felipe VI in a ceremony that will take place in the coming weeks. “I am honoured to represent His Majesty Charles III and my country as Ambassador to Spain and Andorra,” said Ellis. Adding, I am looking forward to supporting this relationship to become even stronger.”

The Canary Islands have been the only Spanish destination represented at the nineteenth meeting of the United Nations Committee on Tourism and Sustainability, which is being held in Costa Rica with the aim of addressing in depth key issues for the global tourism industry and its future development. "We must think about the benefit to the residents and the choice of a tourist who is respectful of our territory," said Jessica de León during the meeting.

A report shows that out of all the Canary Islands The population of Lanzarote is the most concerned, about the impact of tourism, at least as it is currently planned, in the area of ​​traffic and mobility and in the waste and pollution, as well as causing irreparable damage to ecosystems. The increase in traffic and its detriment to mobility is perceived as a negative consequence of tourism by 76.2% of people in Lanzarote according to the latest Survey of Habits and Socioeconomic Confidence.

The Canary Islands and the PP agree on a document on migration to negotiate with the central government. It establishes nine points, including the criteria for the referral of unaccompanied minors who arrive on the coasts of the Canary Islands and the modification of article 35 of the Immigration Law.

LANZAROTE NEWS HEADLINES FOR TUESDAY 10.09.24

The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has taken a further step in its policy of territorial planning and control of tourist and population growth, by acting to remove from the island market a total of 506 tourist beds whose licenses have expired. Specifically, 160 tourist places were in the municipality of Tinajo, whilst 346 were in Playa Blanca. "We are also laying the groundwork to build new affordable rental housing, and we are also managing to remove more than 1,800 tourist beds from the market in less than five months," said the president of the Institution, Oswaldo Betancort.

The 17-year-old boy who was run over last Thursday while riding a scooter in Mácher has died. The young man was admitted to hospital in a critical condition with a serious head injury. He was in the hospital's ICU but was ultimately unable to overcome his injuries.

LANZAROTE NEWS HEADLINES FOR MONDAY 09.09.24

A 60 year old man who fell from the abandoned hotel of Playa Blanca, died early Saturday morning from his injuries. The incident happened Friday afternoon when the man fell from the hotel, a distance of around 5 meters. For many years homeless people lived in the shell of the hotel some with their own generators others with not, but as the years go by the hotel continues to decay but keeps getting people going to it because of it's curiosity factor. People that have complained before that it should be demolished will once again have voices for their reasons after this tragic accident.

Despite much negative press from many newspapers and magazines regarding the smells from the Playa Blanca sewage plant, once again from Friday afternoon to lates Saturday night many areas of Playa Blanca had to endure constant waves of nauseating smells with some residents saying that it is getting them down, and others saying that they should not be having to live behind closed doors and windows or not being able to enjoy being in their gardens. One holiday maker on TikTok who had stayed in a 5star hotel of Playa Blanca gave the hotel a bad review which the hotel replied that the smell had come from the Plant. Canal Gestion were recently denounced. Nothing has been amended as yet.

UD Lanzarote started off the new season with a 2-0 home win over CD Buzanada, this seasons home games are being played in Tias, CD Union sur Yaiza went down 1-0 away to CD Coria.

Arrecife will receive 140 cruise ships by the end of the year, the largest growth in the Canary Islands. The arrival of the Britannia has 4,000 cruise passengers on board kicking off the cruise season in the island's capital. The Britannia is 330 meters long and 44 meters wide. It will leave Lanzarote tomorrow afternoon. With these forecasts of stopovers, " it is estimated that Arrecife will reach the figure of 600,000 cruise passengers in 2024.

The Water Consortium is waiting for new reports to make decisions on Canal Gestión. President of the Cabildo Oswaldo Betancort affirms that "the supply of water to the population will always be assured," and adds that "we are here to monitor non-compliance, provide solutions and not to distribute blame." He added "This has only just begun”, in reference to the new resources that his government is dedicating to demand compliance with this contract.

LANZAROTE NEWS HEADLINES FOR THURSDAY 05.09.24

The number of patients waiting for surgery in the Canary Islands' public health system has fallen by 6.23% over the last year and the average waiting time for each patient has fallen by 24 days to four months and seven days, which is less than the national average for the first time in years. At present, half of the 34,125 patients who were waiting for an operation in public hospitals in the Canary Islands on 30 June have waited 80 days or less.

Tourism in Lanzarote has continued to break records this year. Between January and July, the island has experienced a tourist growth of 14.3% to 2.1 million tourists, that is 300,000 more visitors than last year. It also shows that the protests against mass tourism held in April throughout the Canary Islands which then spread throughout the country have not been reflected in a decrease in tourist flows.
