[Estela Flamenca] The surprising José Luis Postigo

This is how José Luis Postigo Guerra, one of the most recorded flamenco guitarists with 63 albums as acompanist, an inspired dancer (yes, you read that right), guitar collector and authority expresses himself.

[Estela Flamenca] Opening of centennial program of Peña La Perla de Cádiz with María Vargas

To honor the person and artist as deserved, the venerable Peña La Perla de Cádiz has prepared an excellent program of fifteen performances of singing, dancing, and guitar that runs until early September, filling the "little cup of silver" as the city is known with even more silver than usual.

Is it the same kind of pleasure you have listening to Fernanda or Luis el Zambo or Chocolate? Flamenco is alive and well and living in pockets of intensely cultivated tradition.

[Estela Flamenca] Pepe Priego, in remembrance

Pepe and his brother were major players in the history of flamenco by virtue of their intense collaboration with Bambino, a frivolous nickname for a great artist.

[Estela Flamenca] El Gineto de Cádiz: memories of a time, a place, a feeling

Like everyone else, I fell in love with El Gineto, widely known in Cádiz at the time, but nearly unknown elsewhere. I resolved to interview him someday, a meeting that did not take place until the summer of 2007 at Gineto’s home.

[Estela Flamenca] Mariano Parra, American maestro of flamenco and Spanish dance, has died at 91

A respected authority in all genres of Spanish dance, Mariano consulted and choreographed for several major New York-based companies, such as Gabriela Granados’ American Bolero Dance Company and Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana. His vast knowledge of flamenco and Spanish dance will be greatly missed.

Grandpa and La Alameda de Hércules

Nowhere in the world there has been such a concentration of flamenco artists as at La Alameda de Hércules from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s.

«Nowhere in the world there has been such a concentration of flamenco artists as at La Alameda de Hércules from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s. Nowhere. There were whole tenements (“casas de vecinos”) where only flamenco artists lived, such as the number 8. Every flamenco artist, from the very origins of this art, has lived or visited this place. The quality of singing at La Alameda was unlike anywhere else in the world. It was the best school of cante in history, and also of baile and guitar, of course».

[Bordonazo] Grandpa and his contradictions

True aficionados enjoy anyone who sings well, regardless if they’re Gypsy or not, regardless if they’re from Seville, Cadiz, Malaga, Barcelona or wherever. That’s what I think. Chacón loved Silverio’s cante, but he was also crazy for Manuel Torres, and they probably had quite different styles of singing.

[Estela Flamenca] What is ‘duende’? Does it even exist?

When the duende is upon you, it’s a private personal state, not some all-enveloping cloud that resets the human psyche in any specific way. The greatest moments of personal enlightenment may go unnoticed by anyone other than oneself.

As almost everyone knows, Joselero from Morón was neither named José nor was he from Morón. Luis Torres Cádiz was born in La Puebla de Cazalla in 1910 to parents from Osuna and Estepa. He lived in Morón for forty years, from adolescence, working as a street vendor of lace and sewing items.

-Grandpa, what are the most trustworthy sources, when it comes to the history of cante? -The sources have always been the same: the old masters of cante, particularly the eldest. I can only imagine the things that Chacón heard from Silverio, El Mellizo, Junquera, La Sarneta or Antonio Frijones. -Where they trustworthy?
