SPANISH BAND
Message, a new Spanish reggae band, draws inspiration from iconic Jamaican musicians such as Augustus Pablo, Vin Gordon, Hux Brown, Uziah “Sticky” Thompson, and Gladstone Anderson. The band members, coming from various Spanish cities, including Bilbao, Santander, and Sabadell, are Roberto Sánchez on drums, Gorka Sánchez on bass, Roberto Bartolomé on guitar, Javi Arkotxa on melodica, piano, and organ, Gorka Fernández on trombone, piano, and organ, and Ferrán Cocera on percussion. The band’s main aim is to promote and share the values of reggae, paying homage to their musical heroes while creating their own original material.

PASSION
Their passion for producing authentic instrumental reggae music is evident in their work as showcased on their debut album, Showcase 1, which is released on their own record label. Recorded live on tape at A-Lone Ark Muzik Studio, the album features 7 original instrumental tracks along with their dub versions. The melodica is the lead instrument on the opener, The Riot, and also the delightful sounding Noah Sugar Pan and the matching Message We Bring feature the free reed instrument that was made popular in reggae music by the late great Augustus Pablo. On Brixton Rock, The Warrior’s Rest, and Hotter The Battle it’s the trombone that firmly takes the lead and shines bright on these three instrumentals. Only King’s Music deviates from featuring one of the two wind instruments.

DUB VERSIONS
The dub versions that accompany the instrumental tracks highlight Roberto Sánchez’s signature mixing style, providing a sense of familiarity for fans of the Spanish dub maestro. Each dub version is expertly crafted with a strong vintage flair, offering a pleasant listening experience. Fans who have a passion for instrumentals combined with their dub counterparts are served very well with Message’s debut set.

A recent track from the house of Lone Ark is another pleasing and vibrant affair – and now it’s available in the Pauzeradio vinyl shop.

This Is The Night, released via Mozambique Records, sees Zambeze team up with Lone Ark’s Roberto Sanchez across an interesting and varied track. There’s something rich and rounded about the final mixing and mastering – with a real focus on the lower kHz instrumentation – while those with higher registers come through at important moments.

Musically, the original side A version of This Is The Night is a forward-moving and relentless composition. There are stand-out elements when it comes to the rhythm section that drive the track into Roots territory. The bass is on a winding rhythm – although not the usual drop-beat one – using a mixture of straight and dotted notation to maintain momentum. Its sound is resonant to bring real depth to proceedings. Then, keys are on a persistent bubble rhythm in the mid-range of their register – occasionally breaking out into intricate riffs. However, on top of this, drums run something far-removed from a one drop rhythm – instead, having the snare doing intricate syncopated riffs, hi-hats filling the space in between, and the kick across a dynamic pattern. All this means that This Is The Night has the feel of Roots but the momentum (away from what is a standard BPM) of something nearer Steppers or Ska.

Then, the additional instrumentation is well-placed. What sounds like a clavichord – or possibly a heavily amped, wah-wah’d guitar – runs a rasping riff. Horns come in and out with some interesting sequences that play call and response with the main vocal. There’s good use of additional percussion, including pattering djembe or similar. Meanwhile, strings perform some staccato riffs: melodically unfussy across a one tone pattern, but important, nonetheless. However, towards the end they break out into something more complex – and the whole track is tied up with a pleasing horn solo at the end.

Zambeze’s performance is excellent as well. He has a rounded tone to his voice, working around a lower tenor range a lot of the time. His use of note length – particularly the attention to detail on drawing certain syllables out – is well-placed, as is his elocution; not least the lovely rolling of his ‘R’ sounds. Zambeze uses dynamics well – often varying them across one note, and he does some pleasing vocal runs when needed, but without overusing them. Lyrically, he’s also created a well-structured piece about giving yourself to Jah and the awakening and revelatory experience that comes with that.

The B side features a great dub version – something Sanchez always excels at. Here, the use of reverb and elevation of certain instrumental lines is strong – with the dynamics peaking and troughing to create walls of sound that come and go. There’s great use of high-pass filtering to create rasping, tinny sounds across the drums – and it’s a brilliant reimagining of the original.

Overall, This Is The Night is an excellently constructed track from Sanchez and Zambeze. Musically it’s well-arranged but without being ostentatious; Zambeze has a lovely voice which gives an assured performance, and he’s coupled that with a strong lyrical narrative. A good track that deserves multiple listens.

I-Man Cruz – In A Mission review by Mr.T at Reggae Vibes

I-Man Cruz’s debut album, In A Mission, comes from Roberto Sánchez and his A-Lone Productions label, known for being a reputable source in contemporary reggae music. Like with many of his previous production works, Sanchez provides I-Man Cruz with old skool vibed roots reggae riddims that perfectly complement the artist’s unique singing style, which is inspired by such Jamaican greats as Dennis Brown and Delroy Wilson.

From his early childhood, Ferrán Cocera Cruz, known as I-Man Cruz, had a passion for singing. This affinity led him to join a reggae band called The Red Ones in the late 1990s in his hometown. The band primarily covered classic songs from Studio One. However, it wasn’t until Cruz moved to Santander, Cantabria that he began recording and collaborating with Roberto Sánchez. In 2009, he recorded his first song, To The Light, at the A-Lone Ark Muzik Studio, but it remained unreleased. Five years later, he formed a new band called Rice & Peas, with whom he recorded Everything’s Possible, which is included on this album. Prior to these releases, Cruz had also released two songs: Crisis (under the name Papa Cruz) in 2013 and Nuff A Dem in 2017, both released by Nansa Records. Following these, he did a collab song with Roberto Sánchez, “We’re Going To Zion,” and also released the solo single Tek A Look, also featured on this LP.

With a total of six extended tracks, the album masterfully showcases the vocal abilities and lyrical prowess of the Spanish roots reggae singer. Each vocal cut seamlessly blends into the dub and effortlessly creates an appealing auditory journey that will captivate enthusiasts of reggae and dub music alike. The first tune, the title track In A Mission, is an incredibly catchy and memorable opener with its prominent horn section and lively instrumentation. The following track, Inity, is a perfect continuation that sounds so sweet that the anticipation for its dub version grows. Both musically and lyrically, it keeps the listener engaged throughout. The first side of the album concludes with Everything’s Possible showcasing its excellence. Side B begins with the already familiar Tek A Look, where Cruz’s vocals and lyrics perfectly match the compelling musical backdrop. Next is Follow Unfollow, which, after multiple listens, transitions from slightly above average to considerably better. More or less the same can be said about Joyful Song, a song that has the potential to uplift a listener who may be feeling down.

I-Man Cruz’s debut album serves as a fine introduction to this talented artist.
