A-Lone Productions presents Soul Rebel, the new Ras Teo and Lone Ark album. This special set is the second Lp by the duo after releasing their first Lp, Ten Thousand Lions, back in 2019. Since then they have been collaborating together with different labels, releasing a string of roots reggae records which had a great impact on the worldwide sound system scene. Tunes such as: Shaka Warrior, Behold, Come Back Ya So, Arba Lijoch, All Hail and many more.

Now, this new album is a different thing, it represents a new stage for the duo; this time the ten riddims sang by Teo consists of the most rootikal and minor-key roots-rocksteady tracks produced by Roberto Sánchez for his albums with Alpheus, Keith and Tex or Glen Ricks in the past. Most of the riddims were composed by Roberto, although there are four Phil Pratt riddims covered by Lone Ark Riddim Force. The magic came when Ras Teo started singing at the A-Lone Ark Muzik Studio over them with his unique, smooth and deep style giving those riddims a new depth and perspective. His conscious and spiritual lyrics fit the riddims amazingly well and provide the album with an authentic rootikal energy. The work of Lone Ark Riddim Force and Roberto himself on the backing vocals take the album to a next level, creating a new concept for the duo with this stunning Roots-Rocksteady set. It’s like listening to the old time groups like African Brothers or Abyssinians over Treasure Isle riddims, a musical gem combining sweet and raw riddims with the deepest message. The album has its dub-versions counterpart Lp called Soul Rebel in Dub, signed by Lone Ark Riddim Force. Soul Rebel could be the first roots-reggae-rock-steady album ever released. Hope you all enjoy and the soul and the energy put on it. Definitely a truly special set.

Messengers, the label run by the band Message, presents a new single; Words of My Mouth, a rootikal vocal cut by Roberto “Lone Ark” Sánchez, the well known Spanish engineer/producer, musician and singer as well as drummer of the band. The flip side showcases a tuff dub, reminiscent of the best Channel One years, called Meditation Of My Dub. Roberto sings his song using a third over his own lead vocal following the duo-art of singing created by groups such as Earth & Stone. For his lyrics he uses part of Psalm 19. This Psalm (To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David) talks about the Glory of God displayed through His Creation and His Word. This rockers riddim brings in mind the best Revolutionaries riddims from the 70’s: from the wah guitar by Jah Riddim to the tuff bass line and raw drum pattern of Mr. Bassie and Lone Ark, and the clavinet and bubble of Bass Lee and Junior G, everything sounds as it should. The riddim was previously released on Messengers label with a trombone instrumental by Junior G called Winds Of Change and followed by its dub. Same way it was part of the second studio album of Message band, Showcase Vol.II. This new vocal cut, Words of My Mouth, will be also part of the forthcoming Roberto “Lone Ark” Sánchez vocal album with Message that will be soon released.

This single is the forth 7 inch release from the band and starts a series of collaborations with different singers that will see the light on their own label. The single, as well as the previous material released on Messengers label, have been produced by Message themselves and recorded and mixed by Roberto Sánchez at his A-Lone Ark Muzik Studio. Everything recorded live and on reel to reel tapes, and mixed in the old school way, analogically, for the pleasure of all roots lovers in all terms.

SPANISH BAND
Message, a new Spanish reggae band, draws inspiration from iconic Jamaican musicians such as Augustus Pablo, Vin Gordon, Hux Brown, Uziah “Sticky” Thompson, and Gladstone Anderson. The band members, coming from various Spanish cities, including Bilbao, Santander, and Sabadell, are Roberto Sánchez on drums, Gorka Sánchez on bass, Roberto Bartolomé on guitar, Javi Arkotxa on melodica, piano, and organ, Gorka Fernández on trombone, piano, and organ, and Ferrán Cocera on percussion. The band’s main aim is to promote and share the values of reggae, paying homage to their musical heroes while creating their own original material.

PASSION
Their passion for producing authentic instrumental reggae music is evident in their work as showcased on their debut album, Showcase 1, which is released on their own record label. Recorded live on tape at A-Lone Ark Muzik Studio, the album features 7 original instrumental tracks along with their dub versions. The melodica is the lead instrument on the opener, The Riot, and also the delightful sounding Noah Sugar Pan and the matching Message We Bring feature the free reed instrument that was made popular in reggae music by the late great Augustus Pablo. On Brixton Rock, The Warrior’s Rest, and Hotter The Battle it’s the trombone that firmly takes the lead and shines bright on these three instrumentals. Only King’s Music deviates from featuring one of the two wind instruments.

DUB VERSIONS
The dub versions that accompany the instrumental tracks highlight Roberto Sánchez’s signature mixing style, providing a sense of familiarity for fans of the Spanish dub maestro. Each dub version is expertly crafted with a strong vintage flair, offering a pleasant listening experience. Fans who have a passion for instrumentals combined with their dub counterparts are served very well with Message’s debut set.

A recent track from the house of Lone Ark is another pleasing and vibrant affair – and now it’s available in the Pauzeradio vinyl shop.

This Is The Night, released via Mozambique Records, sees Zambeze team up with Lone Ark’s Roberto Sanchez across an interesting and varied track. There’s something rich and rounded about the final mixing and mastering – with a real focus on the lower kHz instrumentation – while those with higher registers come through at important moments.

Musically, the original side A version of This Is The Night is a forward-moving and relentless composition. There are stand-out elements when it comes to the rhythm section that drive the track into Roots territory. The bass is on a winding rhythm – although not the usual drop-beat one – using a mixture of straight and dotted notation to maintain momentum. Its sound is resonant to bring real depth to proceedings. Then, keys are on a persistent bubble rhythm in the mid-range of their register – occasionally breaking out into intricate riffs. However, on top of this, drums run something far-removed from a one drop rhythm – instead, having the snare doing intricate syncopated riffs, hi-hats filling the space in between, and the kick across a dynamic pattern. All this means that This Is The Night has the feel of Roots but the momentum (away from what is a standard BPM) of something nearer Steppers or Ska.

Then, the additional instrumentation is well-placed. What sounds like a clavichord – or possibly a heavily amped, wah-wah’d guitar – runs a rasping riff. Horns come in and out with some interesting sequences that play call and response with the main vocal. There’s good use of additional percussion, including pattering djembe or similar. Meanwhile, strings perform some staccato riffs: melodically unfussy across a one tone pattern, but important, nonetheless. However, towards the end they break out into something more complex – and the whole track is tied up with a pleasing horn solo at the end.

Zambeze’s performance is excellent as well. He has a rounded tone to his voice, working around a lower tenor range a lot of the time. His use of note length – particularly the attention to detail on drawing certain syllables out – is well-placed, as is his elocution; not least the lovely rolling of his ‘R’ sounds. Zambeze uses dynamics well – often varying them across one note, and he does some pleasing vocal runs when needed, but without overusing them. Lyrically, he’s also created a well-structured piece about giving yourself to Jah and the awakening and revelatory experience that comes with that.

The B side features a great dub version – something Sanchez always excels at. Here, the use of reverb and elevation of certain instrumental lines is strong – with the dynamics peaking and troughing to create walls of sound that come and go. There’s great use of high-pass filtering to create rasping, tinny sounds across the drums – and it’s a brilliant reimagining of the original.

Overall, This Is The Night is an excellently constructed track from Sanchez and Zambeze. Musically it’s well-arranged but without being ostentatious; Zambeze has a lovely voice which gives an assured performance, and he’s coupled that with a strong lyrical narrative. A good track that deserves multiple listens.
