🔴 La Diada, Catalonia’s National Day, is celebrated every year on September 11th. It marks the fall of Barcelona in 1714, which ended Catalonia’s autonomy.
Today, it’s a day of both remembrance and celebration. Many Catalans take to the streets for marches and protests, especially supporters of independence.
🌹Flowers are placed at memorial sites from the war, and there are cultural performances like Castells (human towers), Correfocs (fire runs with pyrotechnics), and traditional dances like the sardana.
Bookstores organize readings, and traditional Catalan dishes are enjoyed, such as escalivada (grilled vegetables), pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomatoes), and butifarra (Catalan sausage) with white beans.
La Diada is a strong expression of Catalonia’s cultural pride and its distinct identity.
If you have Catalan friends, be sure to wish them Bona Diada! And if you support Catalan independence, you can say Visca Catalunya!
