A court has sentenced comedian Leo Lins to more than eight years in prison for inciting intolerance through a stand-up performance viewed by over three million people on YouTube.

On Tuesday 3 June, Brazilian comedian Leo Lins was sentenced to over eight years in prison for making discriminatory remarks in a stand-up routine that targeted a wide range of minority groups — including black people, obese individuals, elderly people, those living with HIV, homosexuals, evangelicals, Indigenous communities, people from the impoverished northeast of Brazil, Jews, and people with disabilities.

The federal court in São Paulo ruled that the right to freedom of expression is not absolute, and when it comes into conflict with human dignity, the latter must prevail. Lins’s defence team has announced plans to appeal the verdict.

Several fellow comedians have spoken out in defence of Lins. Antonio Tabet, creator of the show Porta dos Fundos, wrote on X: “You might not find Leo Lins’s jokes funny — you might even detest them — but sentencing someone to prison over them is madness and harmful. I hope this irrational decision is overturned.”

Comedian Jonathan Nemmer expressed dismay that Brazil is “a country that takes comedians’ jokes seriously but treats politicians’ actions as a joke.”

Mercadona and Alcampo have removed free-range eggs from their shelves that came from the now-infamous “farm of horrors” in Llucmajor. The decision by the supermarkets on the island follows the news that the regional government has taken precautionary measures, suspending the operations of one of the six units at the Ses Cisternetes farm, run by Avícola Son Perot. The unit was subject to an eight-hour inspection last week.

The inspection, carried out in collaboration with SEPRONA (the environmental division of Guardia Civil), came after animal rights groups released disturbing footage showing dead hens, dead rats, and filthy conditions within the facility.

As a result, the government has launched disciplinary proceedings against the farm for breaches of hygiene regulations in livestock production and has halted activity in building 7G. It has also ordered that this unit be removed from the official registry.
The 20,000 hens housed in that unit will have to be culled, and all eggs produced there – including those already in storage – have been seized. Their distribution and sale are now prohibited, preventing them from entering the food chain.

If you are living in Mallorca — or planning to bring a car to the island — you might want to look beyond Palma when it comes to registering your vehicle. Tucked away in the scenic Serra de Tramuntana, the tiny municipality of Escorca has become an unlikely magnet for businesses looking to save on Spain’s annual vehicle tax. In fact, this remote mountain village now ranks as one of the top “fiscal paradises” for car registration in the entire country.

If you are living in Mallorca — or planning to bring a car to the island — you might want to look beyond Palma when it comes to registering your vehicle.

Art Jeane, the Brazilian-born artist, recently spoke to Euro Weekly News following her latest public intervention in Denia’s town centre, where she installed a series of Ugly Faces artworks made from recycled materials and cigarette butts collected during local beach clean-ups.

The pieces appeared overnight on cardboard canvases placed along Carrer de Loreto, each featuring distorted human faces stitched and painted with fabric, wire, and to***co waste. The goal? To jolt passers-by into reflecting on the damage caused by smoking — not only to their health, but also to the environment they live in.
