All I wanted to was get reading again.
Little did I know that 5 women were going to make that happen... with the perfect book.
A few weeks ago, I mentioned I was looking for book recommendations in a post here. Thanks for all the amazing suggestions. They are safely saved!!!
But what I didn’t expect was that a group of 70 and 80 year old women, who I teach English to, were going to show up with a gift the last time I saw them. I don't teach anymore but this class isn't teaching... it's friendship... a window into Catalunya... a window into local life... a window into their worlds. And they are always so generous. This time in the shape of a book they thought I’d love.
Malibu Rising, by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
They had no idea I hadn’t read it. But one of them had, and decided it needed to be mine.
Oddly enough, the first book I read by the same author (The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo) was given to me by my dear friend Delia .monk, and I read it during a really tough time. I was in hospital with my youngest, who had pneumonia. That book was pure escapism. It got me through.
This one was as much of a page turner. Easy but so satisfying. It pulled me out of the scroll. It reminded me what it feels like to just be properly locked in a story. And I finished it just in time for today.
So this is me, showing up on Sant Jordi, with a rose in my heart (well, in a glass of water on the kitchen side, thanks Nick) and a book in my hands.
Grateful for this place. Grateful for these women. Grateful to have broken the seal and turning pages again.
Feliç Sant Jordi.
