Imagine that as the hand enters the water, middle finger first, it slots into a rail that pulls the hand forward and in a straight line with the shoulder. Keep visualising that the power of the rail pulling you forward rotates the opposite shoulder and hip out of the water. This is great technique. It promotes a great catch and prevents shoulder injuries. Two very important reasons to visualise and execute it correctly every time. The fingertips lead the entry.

Did you know that the scapula and the muscles that surround it are responsible for keeping the shoulder in place? When swimming we do not strengthen these muscles enough, because when we "pull" we mainly use the frontal muscles of the body. This creates muscle imbalances. To prevent injuries we must strengthen these scapular muscles with dryland exercises as shown in the video above.

Here a couple of very effective drills that you can do on land to facilitate the mastery of the very cool butterfly stroke. The stronger, more mobile and agile we become on land the easier the learning process: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FLIERS 🦅 - lay on a mat on your stomach, bring your arms at 90° angle, stretch your legs and plant your toes on the floor. Lift your arms and keep your head still with your eyes looking down. From that position move the arms up and down with the thumbs looking up. This is a great way to engage the back and shoulders! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BUTTERFLY PULLS 🚀 - hold a similar position as the one before however this time stretch your arms and keep them at shoulder width. Lift your feet up bring them together and point your toes. From that position you will bring your hands under your armpits all the way back to your legs and then back up again. Don’t touch the floor at all times. This is a great drill to stay composed while activating the back and shoulder muscles!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
STREAMLINE POSITION (SP) FLY KICKS 🐬 - take the same position as before however this time bring the arms together holding your head tightly and lifting it from the floor. Bring your legs and feet together and from that position try to kick in butterfly while holding the upper body still. This is a great stability workout specifically for the core! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As always take your time, learn the correct movements first and then bring
Swimming on the back is not easy and requires a lot of strength particularly in the legs. With a strong kick we can then hold a high body position and a clean efficient stroke. Here some important pointers for backstroke: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹 HEAD STILL & IN NATURAL POSITION - this is key for minimizing drag and creating unwanted turbulence.
🔹 STRAIGHT ARM RECOVERY - while the arm exits the water for recovery keep them straight and with slight tension to optimize the entry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹 PINKY ENTERS WATER - as the hand enters the water the pinky is the one to break the surface. This will minimize splashing and hence avoiding unwanted air bubbles during the catch phase. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
🔹 TORSO CONNECTION - the torso is the powerhouse and sets the arms up for the correct recovery and catch positioning. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🔹 KICK & HIP CONNECTION - coordination is key, hence torso / hips / kicks should all dance at the same tune. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
