Meet Top 4 Famous Black Celebrities Who Are Living With HIV

Many celebrities have chosen to share that part of themselves with the public. Often, that choice helps the rest of us: By coming out, they can humanize the virus for many people who don’t otherwise know anybody who’s openly living with HIV. They can help increase awareness and fight stigma.

Here’s a rundown of some of the most famous black people living with HIV.

1. Criselda Kananda
At the time of the radio host and social media star's diagnosis 15 years ago, there was little hope for expectant mothers and their children. Criselda sits on the South African National Aids Council board and has three children.

2. Musa ‘Queen’ Njoko
Famous gospel singer Musa Njoko has been living with HIV for almost two decades at this point.

She said that she had fought the sickness for years despite being told months to live.

"He was barely 2 when I got HIV. My situation was terminal at the time. By God's grace, she's seen him start school and become a worldwide celebrity performing an ad for Oros.

3. Magic Johnson
Magic Johnson has AIDS. He revealed himself in 1991. Magic also caught the infection. He says he slept with multiple women as a basketball player.

I'm sure I got HIV via unprotected in*******se with an HIV-positive lady. I can't place the time or woman. Numbers matter. Before marriage, I was a bachelor. As I traveled to NBA cities, I never lacked female companionship. "When I came in L.A. in 1979, I tried to accommodate as many ladies as possible, mostly through unprotected in*******se," he said.

I'd often wondered what it was like to be with several women. I've arranged similar evenings with two or more women. It's evident how I acquired HIV. He answered, "I don't know who handed it to me."

4. Saidy Brown
Actress Saidy Brown, now 23 years old, is one of several Mzansi celebrities living with HIV. At 14, she learned she had the virus. Her parents died from the sickness. Her father died when she was 9 and her mother a year later.

Her school's HIV test revealed her status. She was surprised by the results and hid them for six months before contacting her aunt, who informed her about her parents and how she may have become sick. She lived in denial for two years and didn't start taking medicine until her body deteriorated at 16 years old.

Vocalist Saidy Brown feels she was born for a reason since she didn't die soon after birth like many HIV-positive babies. She never hesitates to tell potential dates about her HIV status, despite being rejected.

PUP Chairman Kogar Congratulates Senator-Elect Jallah

The Chairman of the People’s Unification Party (PUP), Nimba County’s district #5 Representative, Samuel G. Kogar, has called on all candidates who participated in the just-ended Lofa County by-election to accept the result as was announced by the National Elections Commission (NEC) and congratulate the winner.

Addressing supporters and partisans of PUP upon his arrival at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, the Nimba County district #5 legislator congratulated the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC)-supported candidate, Cllr. Joseph Kpartor Jallah, as winner of the by-election. The PUP Chairman said, although his party’s candidate lost the election, it is democratically prudent to congratulate the winner of the by-election. He pointed out that his party has learned lessons from the by-election as to how to select people to contest on the party’s ticket. He applauded Lofa citizens for peacefully exercising their right during the by-election. He further appreciated supporters and partisans of PUP for standing by candidate Sumo Kupee.

According to the PUP Chairman, the people of Lofa County have suffered for long for representation at the Liberian Senate, and so calling for recount or re-run will still cause further delay for Lofa in having full representation at the Liberian Senate. He admonished all candidates and political parties to talk to their supporters to accept the result in the name of peace. He averred that the people of Lofa have spoken and, therefore, defeated candidates should allow NEC to certificate the winner of the election.

Representative Kogar commended his supporters and partisans of PUP for the warm reception given him during his arrival on Tuesday, July 5, 2022. He informed his followers that his trip in Ghana was purely medical, and he is medically fit. He vowed to return to his district soon to have interaction with his citizens ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Military alliance will discuss new strategic concept for upcoming decade and is set to label Russia as a primary threat.

NATO summit opens amid warnings of ‘a more dangerous world’

On the eve of NATO’s annual summit, the head of the Western defence alliance called for member states to boost their military spending in an increasingly “unpredictable” and “dangerous” world.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked a “fundamental shift” in NATO’s approach to defence, the NATO chief said. As preparations for the summit talks began on Tuesday, that shift was underscored when the military alliance announced that it will be joined by two new members: Finland and Sweden.

Russia’s war on its nearest neighbour has prompted Sweden and Finland to abandon their long-held nonaligned status and apply to join the military bloc.

Alongside welcoming new members, NATO allies will also agree at the summit to increase the strength of their rapid reaction force by nearly eightfold, from 40,000 to 300,000 troops.

The new forces will be based in their home countries but will be dedicated to rapidly deploy to specific countries on NATO’s eastern flank with Russia, where the alliance plans to also build up stocks of equipment and ammunition.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the summit meetings on Wednesday and Thursday would chart a blueprint for the alliance “in a more dangerous and unpredictable world”.

“To be able to defend in a more dangerous world we have to invest more in our defence,” Stoltenberg said.

Top of the agenda for leaders is strengthening defences against Russia and supporting Ukraine in its fight against Moscow, both of which require more financial commitment from NATO members.

Just nine of NATO’s 30 members meet the organisation’s target of spending 2 percent of GDP on defence.

Spain, which is hosting the summit, spends only half of that.

With the Russia-Ukraine war serving as the backdrop, the three-day summit in Madrid will set the course of the alliance for the coming years, including NATO’s new Strategic Concept – a once-a-decade set of priorities and goals.

“A big point of the discussions will be just how far to go in assistance for Ukraine by NATO – with everyone here deeply aware of the real danger involved in allowing President Putin to paint this conflict as between Russia and NATO,” Al Jazeera’s Jonah Hull said.

Barclayville Magisterial Court Judge Nyanti
Raises Serious Concern over the Lack of Prison Facility in Grand Kru County
.. Says the situation remains a major impediment in the Dispensation of Justice

The Magistrate Court Judge of the Barclayville Magisterial court John Nyanti has raised serious concern about the prolonged absence and delay in the construction of a modern prison facility within in the county.

According to him, the prevailing situation is negatively impacting one of the key components of the criminal justice system of the County.

The local court judge Nyanti indicated that, the longstanding and highly unfortunate situation has compelled authorities in the county to transport perpetrators of major crimes, convicted criminals and pretrial detainees to Maryland, River Gee, Sinoe and Grand Gedeh Counties on commercial motorbikes.

He made the assertions recently at his office in Barclayville in an interview with a team of Journalists.

Judge Nyanti noted that the current situation is not welcoming for the county and relatives of detainees who want to visit their brothers or sisters who are behind bars.

The court authority emphasized that when the prison facility is built and turn over to the Bureau of Correction and Rehabilitation through the Ministry of Justice in the county, it will enhance and strengthen the three components of the legal system in the efficient release of the justice system, adding that, it will also restore citizens confidence in the legal system.

John Nyanti pointed out that the construction of a prison compound in the county will make it possible for local citizens, county administration and legislative caucus to persistently engage central government through the Ministry of Justice, as Grand Kru County is the only county in Liberia that does not have a prison center, despite recommendations submitted to the justice ministry.

The Grand Kru County Prosecutor lamented that the lack of a detention facility is a major impediment the Criminal Justice System is faced with, noting that, the LNP female component of the cell is the only one being used by authorities of the Bureau of Correction and Rehabilitation to correct both male and female inmates, which is unusual.

The City court Judge believes that the absence of a correction center has resulted in correction officials rejecting inmates sent by various magisterial courts within the county due to limited space at the withholding cell, noting that the facility can only provide comfortable accommodation for less than 14 persons.

He wants the central government to see the need to construct a prison compound as urgent, as well as the deployment of more police officers in Grand Kru County.

At the same time, he has spoken of frustration over the lack of office space for the smooth operation of the Court in Grand Kru.

It was learned that the Magisterial Court is running its daily operations from the Grand Kru County’s administration building, something Magistrate John Nyanti termed as causing a delay in the court operations.

He is calling on humanitarian organization and partners through the county authorities for the construction of the Barclayville Magisterial Court and other courts.

A Russian pilot who returned to Moscow from the United States this week as part of a prisoner swap said on Thursday he had been tortured in custody in Liberia before his extradition to America.

Konstantin Yaroshenko also alleged he had been beaten at a military base in the United States, a claim rejected by the White House.

Yaroshenko was detained in 2010 in Liberia by U.S. special forces as part of a major drug bust. U.S. authorities then convicted him for conspiracy to smuggle co***ne into the United States and he was serving a 20-year sentence.

He was released in exchange for former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed, who was convicted in Russia in 2019 of endangering the lives of two police officers while drunk on a visit to Moscow. Washington branded Reed's trial a "theater of the absurd".

Of his time in Liberia, Yaroshenko said: "They really worked on me. If you saw that torture room now -- it's not for the faint of heart. It's like something from a horror movie."

He did not say whether the alleged torture had been carried out by Liberians or Americans.

A Liberian government spokesperson did not respond to calls on Thursday requesting comment.

Flanked by his wife and daughter in the television studio of Russian media firm Izvestia, Yaroshenko said he was sat on a chair with his arms shackled and beaten for three days.

"Heels, kidneys, ge****ls, strangled -- believe me, everything there was serious... Of course, to survive that was very hard," he said.

Yaroshenko said he was then flown to a military base in the United States, asked to sign some documents and beaten when he refused.

Guinea's junta regime has issued transition charter that outlines the missions and duties of the transitional government. The charter bars any members of the junta from running in elections, and coup leader Lt. Col. Mamady Doumbouya will remain in place as the interim president. The government will be headed by a civilian prime minister and a National Transitional Council will serve as parliament, composed of 81 members ranging from political parties to youth leaders. The council must also have at least 30% women among its members. Once ready, it will then determine the length of the transition. What do you think?

🖋️Updates from The Republic of Guinea.

The Guinean Military leader have spoken👇👇👇

We respect you as ECOWAS but we will not take your orders. Don't assume powers you don't have... Guinea is an independent nation, and not your family business where you will go around dictating.

The Army removed a dictator who changed our constitution to remain in power; the people are up to now celebrating his downfall, why do you want us to restore his Government yet people are against him, go on the streets of Conakry and talk to people and you will know their position..

Please stop dictating, don't lecture us on democracy. ECOWAS and AU are a batch of dictators with mentality of occupying and colonizing Africans. Dictators think they will rule African countries as if they are running their families.

We are closely following the events (in Uganda) and we have learnt that Museveni hasn't slept eversince we took over power. He has been calling fellow dictators to undermine our leadership.

Museveni should instead focus on his country and rebuild it since he destroyed it long ago to the extent that there is no constitutional order in Uganda. Museveni is the constitution in Uganda and he is still protected by AU, a batch of tyrants on our Continent.

Museveni family rule in Uganda, he dominates everything and Ugandans have suffered under his hands.

Dictator Museveni who is writing missives against us accusing us of being backed by western powers, but he himself is the real agent of the western powers...He was used to gather Intelligence on Omar Al Bashir, he was used by the west to spy on Gadaffi..and he is still doing more for the west..

If he, Museveni, is working for the west, he is the kind of puppet leader who doesn't know his place in history and is responsible for the death of Thomas Sankara and Patrice Lumumba, Museveni is a traitor to the new African order... If he continues his outbursts against us, we have more capabilities to undermine him on the African continent and beyond including ending his tyrannical missile in Uganda.

For Museveni and his fellow African dictators at AU, Please stop interfering in the affairs of Guinea, stop lecturing us on democracy, stop your colonial mentality, concentrate on fighting poverty in your countries, and serving our people well on this Continent, they are suffering. Museveni, you have tainted your legacy and you have destroyed all your achievements and credibility.

Good leaders must learn to serve, and retire peacefully.

There has been a failed military coup in Sudan. Over 40 suspects have been arrested, according to government and military sources. They attempted to take control of the military general command and the public broadcaster's television studios. The country is now ruled by a joint civilian and military government. The transitional government has been under increasing pressure to end wars between rebel groups, grow the economy, attract much-needed foreign aid and deliver the promised democracy. Guinea Junta detains ex -minister for several hours

Guinea's new junta held a former minister, Tibou Kamara, for several hours after arresting him before dawn on Sunday and ransacking his home, according to his entourage and an official statement.

Kamara was industry minister and spokesman in the government of Alpha Conde, who was overthrown in a coup in the West African country on September 5.

Kamara was taken to an undisclosed location with no explanation, an associate told AFP.

Around 10 men searched his home and took away various items including phones belonging to his entourage, the source said.

Kamara was released Sunday afternoon, his entourage said.

The ruling National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) confirmed the arrest in a statement read out over state television, accusing Kamara of violating pledges of neutrality towards the junta.

Social peace

After the coup, the CNRD told the ousted government "to abstain from any action or communication that could disturb social peace and the patriotic fervour sparked by the arrival of the CNRD", the statement said.

It accused Kamara of "clear and repeated violation" of this commitment, adding that "several items relating to this violation were seized" at his home.

"The CNRD, true to its commitment to make justice its compass, assures the people of Guinea that no witch hunt will be carried out," it said.

The CNRD barred former ministers from leaving the poor former French colony and ordered them to hand over their travel documents and return their official vehicles.

Authoritarianism

The putsch has fuelled international concerns over democratic backsliding across West Africa and drawn parallels with Mali, which suffered two coups since August 2020.
