Yesterday, I handed my son a 50 Danish kroner bill, curious to test his grasp for monetary value. I asked. How much is this? His response? A shrug and a simple I don’t know, daddy.
Undeterred, I passed the same bill to my second daughter, eager for her perspective. How much is this bill, sweetheart?
Her confident response echoed through the room. 50? I affirmed her correctness. But the true lesson came when I asked her what she could do with it. Her innocent uncertainty mirrored her little brother.
However, the narrative shifted when I entrusted the bill to my first daughter, Sky. How much is this bill? I asked once more. 50 kroner, she replied without hesitation. And then, the magic happened.
What can you do with it? I asked. Sky’s eyes lit up with possibilities. I can buy Friday candy, bananas, apples, strawberries, grapes, and more! Her excitement was infectious, and I had to intervene to stop her endless list.
Reflecting on this simple exchange, there a profound truth: the perception of value is not universal. Just because someone fails to recognize your worth doesn’t diminish it. Sometimes, all it takes is a change of environment, a shift in perspective, for your true value to shine through.
So, remember today, your identity is not defined by the eyes that fail to see its value.
